I completely regret hiring that analyst. 🤦♂️ I wish we had someone who could’ve warned me not to do that; someone who could have put this process on easy mode. 😎
Take a deep breath, my friend. It’s going to be fine. 😥 Hiring analysts is challenging today. It seems like a never-ending game of “Who is telling the truth?”
I’ve been there, and here are three get-to-the-point ways to win at hiring analysts:
1️⃣ Have a clearly defined role instead of a wish list.
Have an explicit list of role/task expectations for your analyst to do during their first 6 months to 1 year in your organization. Yes, this can evolve, but you need the bare minimum to be laid out. This is your TARGET.
2️⃣ Ask candidates to describe their project work that aligns with your expectations.
There should be no hesitancy here. No vague answers. They should be able to provide details. Software, packages, and methodologies used. Who wrote the code (hint – if they didn’t write it, don’t hire them). How reporting was handled. How they communicated with their clients. This determines if they have ALIGNMENT with your TARGET.
3️⃣ Ask them to describe the issue encountered, lessons learned, and how they would improve that project if they had to do it again.
They may not have a prepared answer for this but should be able to think introspectively and provide a response. This highlights their ability to identify, diagnose, and solve problems. Again, look for details. This demonstrates PROBLEM-SOLVING in ALIGNMENT with your TARGET.
➕ Bonus: Curiosity.
Ask candidates to list the three things they are most curious about and why. There should be excitement and passion in their tone. If their curiosities align with your TARGET, then all the better. Requesting multiple curiosities helps ensure it’s not a canned answer.
Sure, you might still find the occasional candidate who interviews really well and turns out to be a bust. ✴ However, these approaches will help you vet basic capabilities to ensure you don’t regret your next hire.
And, if you want help along the way I've got your back, my friend. 📞 I’m happy to jump on a call, discuss your challenges, and help you hire your next analyst with confidence.
