You can make money as an architect; it can just take longer compared to other industries. With downward pressure on salaries overall, we still need to close the gap in entry-level positions. Movement “upwards” can look very different depending on the person and the situation they are in. Unfortunately, the most common way for architects to increase their salary is to move to another firm or start their own. But that is also true across industries.

Salary Guides for Architects & Technologists are absolutely everywhere. Most of them are crap. Rumour has it they’re created in only one way. First they go on a pilgrimage up a mountain, then visit a mysterious tribe, consume a brew made from the urine of a tasselled wobbegong, then pull some salary figures out of their back end, before sitting down and making up a load of rubbish that doesn’t make sense.  The RIBA Salary Guide, which everyone seems to benchmark their salaries with is no different. But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe, the crazy math's that don’t make sense, the confusing bandings, the odd regional differences, and the fact that no one is on more than £50k is just how the world of setting salaries works. Which is why I’ve put together a list of reasons you should be happy that the guys at RIBA, and almost everyone else that has a say on Architectural salaries, took the time to go up that mountain and come back with a new guide this year. Although, if you’re an architecture professional who’s not happy with your salary, and want the anti-RIBA guide, that’s probably way off the mark (it’s not), and wasn’t written on a mountain trek whilst under the influence of hallucinogenic shark urine, message me, and I’ll pop it over. For free. Because I’m definitely wrong and RIBA are right*. *They’re not. 

RIBA lives on a different planet. They’re there for the “advancement of Architecture”. Code for let’s throw parties. But they always seem to be at odds with the everyday Architectural Professional. Nobody really likes them for some reason. Maybe it’s because the organisation itself also does things like writing salary guides, which are based on last year’s crap salaries, before telling everyone it’s just a guide, so not to use it to set salary bandings, even though they know it’s the only salary guide anyone reads and that practices do base their salary bandings on it. Hence the reason most in Architecture get paid in peanuts and old hair clippings. Doesn’t make sense to me. Anyway, because they clearly live on a different, very confusing planet, I thought no better cartoon could illustrate my point better than another one of my faves. (B)Rick N Morty(ar).

Why do Architecture Firms Never disclose their salary structure? Many architectural firms in India don't publicly reveal their exact salary amounts; instead, they mention a range, which can be adjusted based on a candidate's skills and the firm's specific requirements. This practice is common across different industries and may be influenced by the lack of clear rules in the architectural profession in India. Moreover, there is a noticeable shift in the profession towards prioritizing visual appeal over good architectural planning, leading to a higher demand for young professionals with software skills, while the need for experienced architects is comparatively lower. Here’s the thing about compensation: It can be difficult to compare salaries for two jobs. I like to use a baseline of $/hr. Here’s an example. 👇 Who is making more money? Jane - $130,000/yr, Full-time (Averages 45 hrs/week) Debra - $120,000/yr, Full-time (Averages 40 hrs/week) If we look at this from an income perspective, Jane earns more. But what did this cost her? There is a component that many fail to consider in this example. Money can be made, lost, won, invested, spent, ect. 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬. You can never be compensated in time. So if we consider time to be our most important factor: How much do they each make? Jane – $55.6 / hr Debra - $57.7 / hr There are many more factors to consider for a true comparison. But if your time (now) is the most valuable thing to you, Don’t leave it out when comparing offers.
