Does more pay = More responsibilities? Curious what you all think. Here’s my take: 👇 Unsurprisingly, my answer is my favorite one, It Depends. The clock doesn’t magically change when your paycheck is increased. When you get a promotion to management for example, You’ll likely still be responsible for your previous work. But now you are managing/leading someone else who does it. Your responsibilities have grown, but your priorities have shifted. Your time is now spent training, reviewing, learning, correcting, strategizing, and training again. As opposed to learning, doing, asking, and doing again. 𝐈𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐣𝐨𝐛, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬. There are pay increases that don’t result in more responsibilities too.  This typically occurs with a job change from a job that is ‘underpaying.’ Sometimes, there is hesitancy to move to a higher paying job over fears of increased expectations and responsibilities. These are fair concerns. These concerns can be mitigated through extensive interviews, asking the right questions, and requesting conversations with current team members. What did I miss here? “Talk about pay.” The number one response I got from Structural Engineers, When I asked them what topics to write about. So here I am. This will be a 4-part series this week. First, I’ll start at the beginning: What do companies mean by “great” or “competitive” pay? I hear something like this a lot: -- “Become an engineer, they have competitive pay.”  -- “We offer a competitive salary.” -- “Join the trades, they have great pay.” 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯? I decided to do some research and define it. According to Indeed, Competitive Pay means: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢. I couldn’t find a definition for “Great Pay.” The definition of great is: 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵, 𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦. But how much above average? I also couldn’t find much on this. After scouring some forums, the best answer I could find was 10% - 20% above average. Essentially, someone would consider the pay to be great if it was 10% - 20% above their current pay. So these are my final definitions: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐲 = Average Pay for Area 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐲 = (Average Pay for Area) * (1.15) Now that we have these loosely defined, we have to talk about another related topic: Comfortable Wages Tune in at 6 AM PDT tomorrow for more. “People in construction are getting paid way too much.” Nope, they're getting paid what they're worth. Here‘s why… For decades now kids have been force fed a narrative that if they want to be successful they need to go to Uni, and that's exactly what a majority have done. Ultimately decreasing the amount of people who enter blue collar jobs/trades and increasing the amount of people with a degree. The first thing you learn in any economics class is that demand and supply sets the price, and what do we currently have…? A decreased supply of skilled labour = Increased prices I’ve recently seen people making comments about the high level of pay that people are receiving in construction, calling it unrealistic, unsustainable, and unfair to those who have studied hard. Yeah, maybe… But the market doesn't care about fairness, just because someone has studied hard doesn't guarantee them anything. While it won't last forever, I think the increased pay in construction is a good thing because it will renew initial interest in our industry and blue collar trades. When people realise that being in the construction industry allows you to: - Earn great money from day one - Have no debt - Get paid while you train  - Learn skills that are in demand all over the world Blue collar jobs are going to become popular again and the perception of our industry will get a little better. This message is particularly aimed at my Multi-Skilled Engineer community, but it really applies to any profession: 📢 📣 🔈 Don't let a comfortable salary today, leave you unprepared for tomorrow ❗ ❗ Over the past four years, I've noticed a significant issue within the Multi-Skilled Engineering sector for manufacturing. Due to a shortage of skilled and well-trained engineers, companies have had to increase wages to attract the best talent. This wage increase trickled down, allowing almost anyone capable of working as a Multi-Skilled Engineer in a manufacturing setting to command higher pay. While the current cost of living crisis means that higher wages are a relief, there's a downside to this trend. The consistent rise in salaries over the last four years has led to a new problem: we now have engineers earning high wages but lacking the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities. Many have become complacent with their salaries and haven't pursued further development. Why is this an issue? The issue arises when these engineers seek new job opportunities. At that point, significant skills gaps become evident, and companies struggle to justify high salaries for candidates who require extensive development just to match the current team's capabilities. What's the takeaway? My advice to engineers is to ask themselves: Is my current employer preparing me for the next 5-10 years, especially with advancements in technology, machinery, and automation? Am I being trained properly and kept up-to-date with the latest robotics, equipment, machines, and processes? If the answer is no, even if you're currently earning a good salary, it's crucial to think about the future. I've seen many engineers face harsh realities when they lose their jobs, only to discover their skills are outdated and no longer in demand. Remember: Don't let a comfortable salary today leave you unprepared for tomorrow. Negotiating your salary can be challenging, especially for Electrical Engineers. Most engineers hope their skills will dictate their salary. While important, it misses a key fact. You never get paid what your deserve - you only get paid what you negotiate. So How do you cross that gap? - Start by researching market rates. Sites like Glassdoor and Payscale are a good start. But the best for EE's we've found is the IEEE salary report.  - Prepare a salary range. Show flexibility while setting clear expectations. - Consider the entire compensation package. Look at benefits, bonuses, and stock options. - Practice your pitch. Confidence and clarity can make a significant difference. Remember, your goal is fair compensation for your skills and contributions. You've worked hard to build your expertise. Make sure your salary reflects that.

Architects more than any other professional group I know are terrified to discuss salary. As an architect, from your early career you’re taught that discussing money distracts from the passion required to be a ‘good’ architect. Money is a tool. It has been a funny year in the construction industry with a lot of big companies going under for various reasons, and reasons that will never truly be made public, obviously due to this the supply chain took a massive hit as well, with more companies going under through no fault of their own. The last 6 or 7 months have been really hard trying to get work which is unusual in the industry. Now thankfully things have started to pick up, more jobs being advertised by the day, but what I dont understand is that because of where the industry has been over the last year the same job role can be advertised at 15/20k less than last year, how can companies advertise for a senior site manager asking for this and that experience and then offer 50k, how can you ask for that experience and then offer a pay that they were on 10 years ago. As much as everything is now moving forward, I just can't see how it works on 10 year old wages.
