The lightness of the packaging Glass In Italy the industry of glass consumes about 1,1 billion cubic meters of gas every year (about 1,5 percent of national consumption). An energy-intensive production that year after year pursues forms of energy saving in order to reduce the consumption of raw materials, energy and, consequently, CO2 emissions. In this logic, the weight of the containers has been reduced: -12% for wine bottles and -18% for sparkling wine. The ever increasing use of glass scrap for the production of bottles, which in many cases today reaches 90%, makes the difference. Every 10% of scrap used to replace raw materials allows for a 2,5% energy saving and a 2% reduction in CO5 emissions.

Best prospects for the future: High-quality profiles with improved carbon footprint 💚    Calcium carbonate is a necessary component for the production of PVC profiles. Around 10,000 tons of this chalk are needed to produce 100,000 tons of profiles.     Unfortunately, this production process is not climate neutral.   In order to change this, a solution was needed.     GEALAN quickly got in touch with Ragn-Sells Group, a company with extensive expertise in recycling and waste management. 🗑️    For more than four years, we have been cooperating with specialists from Estonia. The joint search for a suitable substitute for chalk has now come to a successful end: ash is produced as a waste product during energy production through the combustion of oil shales, which is widespread in Estonia.     The advantage of this ash is that it binds and stores CO2 from industry.   Their processing therefore reduces emissions, namely about 1 ton of carbon dioxide per 1 ton of chalk replaced by ash.      Difficult to use the ash are its impurities and the size of the particles.   Only if the latter is just right can they be perfectly fitted into the polymer compound and enable the usual high quality of GEALAN profiles. 👌     You can read more about the exciting research project here: https://lnkd.in/eyX5bqvk   #gealan #gealanwindows #sustainability #recycling #reduceemissions 

Tomaž Vuk has the carbon. Now he just needs somewhere to send it. Since 2020, Vuk, who sits on the board of the Salonit cement factory in Slovenia, has been plotting to get in on the ground floor of an industry poised to boom in the coming years: carbon capture. It’s one of the ways carbon-spewing factories like the one Vuk helps run are supposed to keep operating in a greener future. There’s just one problem: Vuk has nowhere to store any carbon he traps at the plant. Salonit sits roughly 50 kilometers off the Gulf of Trieste, an Italian port nestled near the Adriatic Sea’s highest point. From there, Salonit can technically ship the carbon anywhere. But for now, it seems the only options are way up in the North Sea — a protracted (and, most notably, expensive) trip around the Continent. Vuk said he’s willing to send the carbon wherever, but would of course prefer spots along the nearby Mediterranean and the Black Seas. For now, that’s not likely. So the North Sea it is. “It might be acceptable to carry those costs for a short period of time until [closer] solutions are ready,” Vuk said.
