In June 2024, we launched our inaugural #OutsideFestival in Denver. Along with creativity and inclusivity, sustainability was a core value of the event from day one. By nature, big live events have a hefty environmental impact and we were determined to not only minimize ours, but to capture deep data that would drive our efforts in the future. With the help of our incredible partner Green Disco we did just that. We’re proud to share the 2024 Outside Festival Impact Report, a comprehensive view of all that we accomplished and, importantly, where we can improve. Some key highlights: ♻️ We collected 9,450 pounds of waste and diverted 71% of it from the landfill through a rigorous recycling and composting program with our partner, Scraps. ♻️ We achieved a 91% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions through hybrid battery systems. ♻️ We avoided 21,000+ single-use plastic water bottles through our hydration stations. ♻️ Through our partnerships with Ball Corporation and Liquid Death, and by working closely with all our food vendors on compostable serveware, we were a proud single-use plastic-free event. ♻️ We donated more than 650 meals to local nonprofits and people with food insecurity. A huge thank you to Green Disco, Groundswell Experiential, Scraps, and to our amazing volunteer Green Team for helping us get here. We also couldn’t have done it without the support, cooperation, and enthusiasm of all our vendors and partners who share our sustainability values and are committed to doing their part. I’m really excited and proud to share this impact report for our inaugural Outside Festival, which went down last June, when close to 20,000 people convened with us in Denver to celebrate outdoor culture. By their nature, big live events have a hefty environmental impact. We were determined to not only minimize ours, but to capture deep data that would drive our efforts in the future. 😎 Buzzing to say our work from Kendal Calling 2024 on the Leave Nothing But Memories campaign has been given a special shoutout in StandOut Multimedia's October Edition of StandOut Magazine for our efforts to reduce waste at the festival this summer! StandOut Magazine is an industry leading print and digital magazine for the live events industry, and you can read the article on by clicking this link: https://lnkd.in/ecjuEwhk What happened this year? 🤔 We help the team at From the Fields (the organisers of the festival) put together an impact strategy that focusses on increasing the positive impact of the festival! This summer's edition of Kendal Calling Festival ended with 98.9% of tents taken home by attendees, up from 98% in 2023, thanks to the ‘Leave Nothing But Memories’ campaign aimed at reducing waste. The sustainability initiatives introduced went beyond tent retention. The reusable cup scheme saw a 44% increase, with 22,500 cups returned to collection points, up from 15,300 in 2023. Partnering with Event Cup Solutions, the cups are washed using renewable energy and recycled when damaged. In a new move for 2024, with our help Kendal Calling also introduced food collection points across the campsites. These efforts resulted in 270 kilos of food being collected and distributed to local food banks, further reducing waste and supporting the community. #sustainableevents #liveevents #sustainability

Taking small steps to make your next event eco-friendly can get the ball rolling. 🌍✨ Here are some easy ways to make your next event more sustainable: — Digital Invitations and Registrations: Reduce paper usage by using online platforms. — Eco-friendly Venue Selection: Choose venues with strong sustainability practices, such as LEED-certified buildings. — Sustainable Catering: Opt for local, organic, and seasonal foods, provide plant-based options, and use reusable or biodegradable utensils. — Waste Reduction: Implement recycling and composting programs, minimize single-use items, and encourage attendees to bring reusable bottles. — Energy Efficiency: Use energy-efficient lighting and venues that utilize renewable energy sources. — Sustainable Swag: Offer eco-friendly merchandise and avoid unnecessary promotional items. — Water Conservation: Provide water stations for refills and choose venues with water-saving fixtures. — Leftover Food Donation: Partner with local charities to donate leftover food. — Sustainable Printing: Use recycled paper and eco-friendly inks if printing is necessary. — Eco-friendly Breakouts: Host breakout sessions involving planting trees or plants to engage attendees and promote networking. At Funlab, we think there’s more to being green than just our many golf courses and famous Caddy polos ;) While we believe the world is better when we fun together, we are also working to reduce our impact on the environment and increase our sustainability and emissions reductions initiatives. This Earth Day, we thought it was a great chance to acknowledge the initiatives we’ve undertaken in the last 12 months and that reducing our impact on the environment around us is a constant area of focus and improvement for all our Motherfunners. In the last 12 months, at Funlab we have: * Removed all single use plastic in our front of house operations in Australian & NZ venues * Removed over two tonnes of plastic from the business annually by switching to wooden golf pencils * Saved 10,000 gift cards annually going to landfill, by partnering with TerraCycle Australia & New Zealand to repurpose them into new products! * Partnered with The Hidden Sea Wine who collaborate with ReSea Project to remove plastic from the ocean with every bottle of wine purchased, with over 62,088 bottles (1,034kg) of plastic from the ocean removed so far! So, what's in store for Funlab in 2024? We're rolling out: * Participation in Container Deposit Schemes, preventing aluminium cans and bottles from ending up in landfill from our venues * Launch of our internal "Think Green" campaign, assisting our venues and Motherfunners with day-to-day greener operations, options and education * Investing into reducing our carbon emissions across the Funlab network of venues #earthday #sustainability

We need to start celebrating our festivals in an eco-conscious way. As we are entering a season of joy, and togetherness, it’s time to think about how our decisions can change the world. A festival, in my opinion, may be a strong vehicle for social transformation. Here are some ideas on how we can all become more mindful: 1. Sustainable Gifting: Give environmentally conscious presents. Handcrafted goods, eco-friendly commodities, or experiences. 2. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Decorations and packing tend to be abundant at festivals. Reusing decorations, choosing eco-friendly packaging, and recycling whenever you can are all excellent ways to reduce waste. 3. Support Local: Using local products, shop for festival needs. Your decisions can benefit local communities and artisans. 4. Give Back: Festivals are also an opportunity to express gratitude. Think about how you can make a difference at another festival by volunteering or contributing. Let me tell you something nobody talks about. We’ve got these flashy events - (Concerts, sports competitions, corporate galas, expos, weddings and the list go on) 100s, 1000s of people coming together to talk about Big Ideas or to celebrate or be entertained. But no one talks about the Waste - The forgotten aftermath of our good intentions & plans. I’m not just talking about carbon emissions from planes and cars - I’m talking about the massive piles of plastic cups, swag bags, brochures, banners, and food waste we leave behind. Mountains of it. It’s like a parade of garbage. And what happens to all of it? Straight into the trash. We come to solve problems but end up creating a whole new one. It’s crazy. So, here’s the deal: If you’re organizing an event, Stop handing out plastic trinkets and bags full of stuff no one needs. Go digital & use QR codes for everything. Agendas, schedules, maps—there’s no excuse for paper in this era. Re-think food. Don’t order enough to feed an army when you’ve only got a battalion. Use local vendors, compost, and donate the leftovers. Simple as that. And if you are a sponsor Ask yourself: How can we contribute without junk? Get them to invest in something sustainable, something with meaning. No more throwaway crap! We need to flip the script. We’ve gotta start holding events where we don’t just talk about sustainability, We live it. Zero waste, zero nonsense! And only solutions. Looking to be more sustainable at your next event? 🌱 Here are a few essential tips for planning a sustainable event: 1. Venue: Choose a green venue! Opt for venues with sustainable practices, such as energy-efficient lighting, recycling programs, and water conservation measures. 2. Materials: Reduce paper use! Use digital invitations, tickets, and programs instead of printed materials. If printing is necessary, use recycled paper and soy-based inks. 3. Food & Beverage: Work with caterers who use locally sourced, organic, and seasonal ingredients. Offer vegetarian and vegan options, which have a lower environmental footprint. Plan accurately to minimize leftovers. Donate any excess food to local charities or compost it. 4. Education & Engagement: Promote sustainability! Encourage attendees to participate in sustainability initiatives, such as bringing their own reusable water bottles or participating in a carpool. 5. Post-Event Actions: Evaluate and improve! After the event, assess the sustainability measures and identify areas for improvement. Gather feedback from attendees and staff to implement at future events. Is there still a place for the Burning Man event in 2024? Following yesterday's post covering the most sustainable festivals around the world, we got more than a few messages asking where is #BurningMan on our list and how sustainable is the dessert event happening next month in Black Rock, Nevada. As most of you probably know, the Burning Man project is more than just a single event, it is more of a movement and an ecosystem for creators, artists and community with projects domestically and internationally with a history going back all the way to the late 80's. With philanthropy, art programs, community support, collaboration and a long tradition and legacy. While all the above brings a lot of positive impact, we can't ignore the environmental impact of the Black Rock event occurring every year in the Nevada dessert, and has been under the spotlight following last year's weather events. environmental impact related to the Burning Man project: The festival 80,000 participants leave a substantial carbon footprint, emitting over 100,000 tons of CO2 annually. Most of the carbon footprint is related to travel and transportation to and from the event. Every year there is an airport built and operated at Black Rock for private planes owners for the sole purpose of attending the festival. While the organizers have stated they aspire to make the event carbon neutral by 2030, some experts do not think they will meet the ambitious goal. The burning Man event has become very popular in recent years amongst finance, tech and venture-capital crowds alongside celebrities and has grown far from the original event in 1986. In the next few year the organisers will have to choose the path forward and adopt more aggressive environmental goals like other festivals have done already, changing narratives and behaviors to fit new and upcoming climate standards or become a thing of the past for next generations. CARNAVAL 2024 CUP SYSTEM IN MAASTRICHT Planning to celebrate Carnaval in Maastricht this year? Since 2016, bars and pubs have switched from glass to soft plastic cups during carnaval (carnival). However, this has led to an increase in plastic waste. To tackle this, the hospitality sector, in collaboration with the municipality, is trialling a new recycling system for carnaval in 2024. The idea is for people to return their cups at the bar for recycling. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 From Friday 9 to Tuesday 13 February 2024, your first drink at any outdoor bar or vendor will include an additional charge of €0.50 for your cup. For subsequent drinks, bring your cup back to the bar. You'll get a new cup and you'll only pay for the drink. When you're ready to head home, return your cup at any bar for recycling. Please note, you won't get any money back for the returned cups. By returning your cups, you're helping the waste collectors and reducing litter.
