Both robotic surgery and laparoscopic surgery have evolved as advanced minimally invasive techniques. Which means bigger operations can now be done with smaller incisions.
Laparoscopic surgery has been around since the early 20th century. The first laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) was performed in 1987. This technique involves small incisions through which a camera and surgical instruments are inserted, allowing surgeons to perform procedures with minimal smaller incisions.
On the other hand, robotic surgery emerged in the late 20th century, with the da Vinci Surgical System being introduced in the early 2000s. The da Vinci System, developed by Intuitive Surgical, enhances laparoscopic surgery by offering greater precision and control through robotic arms controlled by a console. It was initially used for urological and gynecological procedures but has taken off in general surgery as well.
In summary, laparoscopic surgery has a longer history, dating back to the 20th century, while robotic surgery, particularly the da Vinci System, is a more recent advancement, introducing robotic assistance and improved capabilities to minimally invasive procedures.
As surgeons it is important to evolve and improve as new technologies and treatments emerge.
