*🎬[Before 🟢🔵🟡🟠🔴⚫ After]🎥* Some expert disaster damage analysis reports indicate that property loss estimation from recent wildfires in California could exceed $50 billion. The insurance industry's contribution and backup support may be less than 5% of that estimated loss. “There’s going to be a fire; you can’t prevent it.” Those words hit hard, don’t they? Reading this article about Colorado's wildfire risks reminded me of the Decker Fire of 2019, which I watched unfold from my front porch in Salida for nearly two months. As an emergency manager, I encounter these risks daily, but it’s not just about what “could happen.” It’s about what we’re doing NOW to prepare. The wildland-urban interface (WUI) is where nature meets development, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Colorado faces challenges like those in California—drought, high winds, and increased growth in vulnerable areas. Unfortunately, mitigation often takes a back seat to economic and political realities. I have walked through neighborhoods after fires and seen firsthand how small, preventable decisions—like the placement of sheds, wooden fences, or even lawn furniture—can determine whether a home survives or becomes fuel for the fire. It serves as a sobering reminder that preparedness begins at home, but it doesn’t end there. **Here’s the challenge:** As wildfires become more frequent and destructive, how do we balance development, personal property rights, and the need for stronger regulations? **And the question we should all consider:** Are we ready to make the cultural shifts necessary to adapt to a changing climate, or are we waiting for fire to force our hand? What do you think? Can we address the WUI crisis without compromising affordability or community values? https://lnkd.in/ghnmVY3d #EmergencyManagement #Preparedness #WildlandFire #WUI #ClimateChange #MitigationMatters

The devastating wildfire in California, considered one of the most destructive in the state's history, has caused an estimated $150 billion in damages, according to U.S. private forecaster AccuWeather. The blaze, which ignited in Los Angeles on Tuesday, has tragically claimed multiple lives, destroyed hundreds of structures, and severely strained firefighting resources. Strong winds have intensified the inferno, complicating efforts to bring it under control. AccuWeather's preliminary estimate of losses, ranging from $135 billion to $150 billion, could escalate further if the fire spreads to more densely populated regions. #CaliforniaWildfire #EconomicLosses #LosAngelesFires #AccuWeatherEstimates #FirefightingChallenges #Destruction
