It’s a scenario that plays out hundreds, if not thousands, of times each year in our clinics: A person comes in for a primary care visit. During the appointment, they tell a doctor or nurse they cannot afford or access healthy food. Now, we have a comprehensive answer for them. Introducing Kate Henschel and Mang Vang, our two new food resource navigators. Kate and Mang meet with people experiencing food insecurity during and after clinic visits. Then, they connect our patients with shelf-stable food bags for immediate needs, no-cost meal boxes, grocery vouchers, food resources, and more. Currently, our food resource navigators assist patients at several of our East Metro clinics, plus sites in Bloomington and Minneapolis, though we plan to continue expanding the program. We know access to food, stable housing, education, and other factors can significantly affect a person’s health. That’s why we’re broadening the services we provide in our primary care clinics to include food distribution. It’s all part of #FairTable, an expanded effort by Fairview Health Services to address rising food insecurity in Minnesota. As the days count down to our #HDAA2024 #AnalyticsTakesFlight, here's a glimpse into the abstracts of this year's conference. We start off with Jessica Majors, MPA's presentation, "Fresh for You Market - Helping to Close the Loop on Food Insecurity." "EH is the safety net health care system in Indianapolis, IN, providing wrap around care to the underserved of Marion County. Of the patients screened for food insecurity between 2020 – 2022, 27% were food insecure. EH has been screening patients for SDOH since 2018, utilizing the Epic-based tools to document and complete the screening. Many of our health care facilities are in food deserts. In response, the EH Food Services department established a small Fresh for You Market (FFYM) on the hospital campus, selling reasonably priced groceries and basic cooking needs (including fresh produce, meat and dairy). The FFYM also expanded in 2023 with the FFYM on Wheels, a retrofitted public bus that takes the FFYM products on the road to help reach sites without easy food access. In late 2020, the SDOH department launched a pilot food voucher program for patients who screen positive for food insecurity—these patients, originally being seen at the main campus primary care with access to the FFYM, could receive a $30 paper voucher from their care team to shop for groceries. When initial responses to these paper vouchers were overwhelmingly positive, the SDOH team collaborated with the Information Solutions and Analytics teams to determine how to print these vouchers directly from Epic, and to potentially close the loop when a patient redeemed the voucher. This session will review our process of determining the best way to get vouchers into the hands of patients, and then the creation of systems for tracking redemptions and costs over time. While we do not believe that an occasional $30 grocery voucher will solve someone’s food insecurity, we do believe the rapid expansion of this program has engaged patients and staff in this SDOH work, and the strong data tracking piece has enabled us to continue to fund and expand these opportunities." A big, big thanks to Sophie’s Legacy, & Charlotte, for this, and for all of the good work you have done in the past!!! I think that ALL children’s hospitals in the UK should see this booklet!!! **I also especially believe that ALL of the many children’s hospitals in the UK, that STILL do not provide ANY food for parents or carers to eat ON THE WARD along with their young patients, should see the words below which are taken from the booklet: “Feeding Guardians / Carers: Often parents or carers will stay with their children when they are admitted, but it is not often that there is a food provision other than the on-site retail options in hospitals. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed parents on average would spend an additional £405 per week when their baby is in hospital. This included childcare, loss of income and transport, as well as food. We encourage all hospitals to provide suitable food provision for carers and parents of those children and young people (CYP), that are in our care, reducing the financial strain or even that lack of food during this time. Patients can be reluctant for their carers to leave their bedside no matter how short that break may be, consequently they may not have the opportunity to nourish themselves while their child is in hospital. A food provision for parents can help reduce this burden mentally and financially as well as stimulating the social aspect of recovery, especially as hospital admissions can last for weeks.” …or even for months, as I know from personal experience! 💜🎗️ #sophieslegacy #creatingchange #improvechildrensfood #feedtheparents
So excited to share this with you all. Huge thanks to Nick Vadis for getting behind Sophie's wish of improving children's food. Big thanks also to NHS Supply Chain and Foodbuy UK. Sophie would be so proud. #sophieslegacy #creatingchange #nhsfood

On Friday Walgreens announced they were closing 1200 Stores, CVS is closing 900 and Rite Aid is closing 500. Why? Food is Medicine. Let us help you educate your people. Through corporate sponsorship The American Heart Association can educate us and provide valuable tools that help guide us to a better way of living and caring for ourselves and the ones we love. In September 2022, the White House issued a National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health to end hunger and reduce the burden of diet-related diseases by 2030. Through this strategy, we established the “Food Is Medicine Initiative to Unify and Advance Collective Action.” #2030 Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra champions the Food Is Medicine Initiative, which aims to develop and implement a federal strategy to reduce nutrition-related chronic diseases and food insecurity to improve health and racial equity in the United States. This strategy includes diet-related research and programmatic efforts that will increase access to Food Is Medicine initiatives. https://lnkd.in/eiuXuXku

At OLIPOP, we're spotlighting the power of partnerships in creating a healthier future for all. 🤝 By collaborating with organizations and programs that share our commitment to nutrition access and education, we’re making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families. 🥦 We've partnered with local nonprofits for food giveaway events, providing fresh produce and healthy beverage choices to families in need. These initiatives not only address immediate nutritional needs but also promote ongoing education about healthy eating. 🛒 Our products are available through the SNAP program, ensuring that individuals facing food insecurity can access healthier options at locations like Walmart. 💡 Embodying our "Food as Medicine" philosophy, these partnerships are crucial in fostering community health and demonstrating that good nutrition is foundational to good health. Let’s continue building healthier, more vibrant communities together. Stay tuned as we share more about our impactful collaborations and innovative solutions. Together, we can work towards a brighter, healthier future for all. 💪 #NutritionAccess #CommunityHealth #HealthyFuture

I've been on a bit of a hiatus since I last posted on The Savory but I'm looking forward to diving deeper into some of what I've learned over the last (few) weeks! Taking a stab at "What I learned this week" in Food as Medicine/Food as Health (Carter Williams and Ellen Brown style): From iSelect Fund's Food as Health Revolutions Webinar: 1. "It's all about those little twists!" The integration of incentives between varied stakeholders is part of the confusion early on. You can have the technology that works, but it's got to fit and align with multiple incentives. AND, If you're a startup operating in the space, you might want to look towards small, regional partners (less friction along with a higher need!) Carter Williams (E.g., Food City Supermarkets) 2. #FAM programs will be more effective if they're focused on, not solely food insecurity, but a food-based care model i.e., not measuring lbs of food distributed, but health outcomes. Ellen Brown, BP2 Health 3. Addressing clinical insecurity: Supporting HCPs via extension into the home (beyond the 6-minute office visit) and what that means for all stakeholders within value-based care - Jim Howard, Journeys Metabolic 4. It takes a village - partnerships are key! Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH)'s work towards metabolic disease reversal and prevention within communities where residents are, on average, below the poverty line, and living in a food desert - Danielle Harmon (ARH) and Brie Lowry Cox (Utilizing DoorDash for food delivery; Food City as a grocer partner; local agriculture departments, associations, and farmers (e.g., Kentucky Cattlemen's Association, Inc); American College of Lifestyle Medicine to equip providers with the tools to prescribe lifestyle medicine (Martin Tull); academic institutions (e.g., University of Kentucky) for health outcomes measurement And in the spirit of integration between varied stakeholders... 5. There are grocery and food delivery companies who are really stepping up: Kroger Health, Albertsons, Instacart Health, DoorDash, Food City / KVAT Foods Inc. ***Who else am I missing here? 6. There's a TON being done to integrate *local* food within Food as Medicine programs (Erin W. Martin, FreshRx Oklahoma; Think Regeneration's Down at the Farm Rx) 🙌🙌🙌 7. NUTRIENT DENSITY LABELS! Just imagine the impact they will have on our food system. Eric Smith, Edacious, Nutrient Density Alliance (Innate flavor is a signal for what is good for you.) 8. We might live in a world where one day, Food as Medicine programs are no longer needed. Nora LaTorre, Eat Real Certified; Stephen Ritz, Green Bronx Machine And 9. What I'll be cooking this weekend: Rachel Roddy’s recipe for pumpkin, beans, greens, and cheese. (With a smoked ham hock thrown into the stewing beans for good measure) https://lnkd.in/gUzewyVn
