Nerding out here....Public transit needs to be (1) cheap, (2) reliable, (3) frequent, and (4) safe (and comparably fast as the alternatives). Driverless vehicles can help with all of these things. But safety is not just a matter of avoiding crashes--it also involves being safe from criminal activity. How much does the presence of the driver contribute to a "sense" of safety? I can envision many people feeling less safe in certain parts of town without a city employee visibly present who can kick people off the bus or at least report to the authorities. So could driverless buses actually reduce ridership on some routes?

Driverless cars could be on UK roads as soon as 2026, transport secretary says Driverless cars could be on some UK roads as soon as 2026, according to Transport Secretary Mark Harper. Last month, the UK government announced plans to introduce new legislation to bring automated driving to UK roads. While critics have raised concerns over the technology's safety, Harper has personally seen the technology being used in California and wants people to have "confidence" in a proper safety regime. He expects the legislation to pass through parliament by the end of 2024, with the possibility of seeing self-driving vehicles with full capabilities being rolled out by 2026. "The legislation is going through parliament at the moment, so hopefully we'll get that through parliament by the end of 2024," Mark Harper said, according to BBC. https://bit.ly/3vf82NM "Probably by as early as 2026 people will start seeing some elements of these cars that have full self-driving capabilities being rolled out." Harper insists the technology will be introduced gradually and will be up to individuals to use. With 88% of road traffic collisions caused by driver error, Harper believes the technology has the potential to greatly improve road safety for all users. Self-driving vehicles could be on British roads by 2026, after the government’s world-leading Automated Vehicles (#AV) Act became law today (20 May 2024).  Announced in the King’s Speech, the AV Act enables advanced technology to safely drive vehicles on British roads. The new law puts Great Britain firmly at the forefront of self-driving technology regulation, unlocking the potential of an industry estimated to be worth up to £42 billion and creating 38,000 more skilled jobs by 2035.  Road safety is at the heart of the legislation, with automated vehicles expected to improve road safety by reducing human error, which contributes to 88% of road collisions. The law will require self-driving vehicles to achieve a level of safety at least as high as careful and competent human drivers, as well as meeting rigorous safety checks before being allowed onto roads. Therefore, in the future deaths and injuries from drink driving, speeding, tiredness and inattention could be drastically reduced.
