In the Fall of 2022, we convened a group of 16 Kazakh and U.S. experts to discuss and conduct research on issues that will shape Kazakhstan's future. They worked in groups to design and conduct policy-oriented research. Check out our first report by Madina Junussova Zarina Adambussinova and Alexander Diener on decarbonization and its impacts on mining towns. The report, which is based on fieldwork in Zhanaozen and Ekibastuz, points to three potential scenarios for the future of mining regions and towns (zero scenario, rapid transition and slow transition). Neocons keeping Kazakhstan in line with decarbonization. The US needs the contiguous Turkic alliance from Istanbul to Baku onto Central Asia to replace gas from Russia, and for Kazakhstan to use its Chinese Belt and Road infrastructure to do it; however this same reality doesn't allow for the Kazakh's to get rich from the East as well. Summary: "Authors recommend policies to prepare mining regions and towns in Kazakhstan for decarbonization with a goal of achieving just, equitable, and sustainable development." #kazakhstan #unitedstates #geopolitics #centralasia #eurasia #geopoliticalrisk #geopolitique #geopolitical #geopolitik #geopolitica #riskassessment #riskanalysis #china #beltandroad #azerbaijan

At this week's Foreign Investors' Council (FIC) under the President of Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev discussed his country's 4,500 unique mineral deposits, and aims to establish one of the world’s most efficient and transparent regulatory systems for the exploration and extraction of these resources. "According to the President, global investors such as Rio Tinto, Fortescue, HMS Bergbau AG, Kratos Resources, Cove Capital LLC have already entered the Kazakhstani market." Over the past six years, private sector investments in geological exploration have surpassed $1 billion. Nearly 1.6 million square kilometers of Kazakhstan’s territory is open for geological research, President Tokayev highlighted. https://lnkd.in/e5cgy565 #Kazakhstan #UnitedStates #C5+1 #Mining #CriticalMinerals #CoveCapital #KazResources #DepartmentofState #DepartmentofCommerce

The Blended Capital Group - ESG, Governance, Strategy and Finance Integration Leadership Focused on Impact Delivery
Political geology. It is impossible to talk about #mining without talking about the political and geopolitical implications of the industry. There is no choice where to put a mine, which needs to be wherever reserves are found. Some aspects of how political geology plays out: 🎉 #criticalminerals - geopolitics writ large, with looming supply shortfalls of the minerals we need for the #energytransition. China has been very disciplined in growing dominant mining and refining positions, the US/EU/UK are playing catchup. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are positioning themselves as a third option, neither east nor west, but with deep pockets, geographic centrality and a strong interest in growing their footprints 🎉 cartels - time will tell whether cartel-like approaches become dominant for certain minerals. Indonesia, a #nickel superpower, has talked about the possibility of a cartel. The Saudi’s and UAE have experience in this space 🎉 precious metals like #gold aren’t considered critical minerals, but they underpin economic security in real ways. As with critical minerals, those who have gold and those who want it drive dynamics 🎉 internal politics across many countries also affects how mining is evolving, ranging from permitting rules through to anti-mining focus in some places Artisanal mining hasn’t been central when talking about political geology, but this is changing. With 45 million miners spread over Africa, Latin America and Asia, the sector is a strategic source of critical minerals and of precious metals. Formalization multiplies supply while delivering social gains, making #asm an important opportunity for bridging critical minerals supply gaps while also improving local economies and multinational value chains. Focus on ASM will continue to increase significantly as opportunities are delivered. The Blended Capital Group and our partners are committed to reimagining outcomes in artisanal mining. The combination of productivity and social gains is commercially realistic for #mininginvestment and #impactinvestment. The political and geopolitical benefits of focusing on the sector are clear. Zambia is setting its trajectory on mining sector
AERIAL geological #mapping of Zambia is set to start by June monthend this year, as Government has signed a US$100 million contract with Xcalibur Multi-physics of South Africa to undertake the task that was last done in the 1970s. President Hakainde Hichilema has been emphatic on the need to geologically map the country to know her actual mineral wealth, beyond the traditional mining areas. Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Hapenga Kabeta said in an interview that the aerial survey of the country will last one year six months. It would be amazing if this data would be made open source and accessible, such has been missing for so long and the benefits would be many. Makes you wonder how we have been coping since the last time such a survey was conducted in the 1970s. There is a real need for the country and government to push for a data first approach even as we conduct business.

Decarbonisation & sustainable energy management expert
8moIt is so true what was written in the report: 1)"Expert interviews revealed that decision-makers at the national and local levels of government in Kazakhstan are disparate in their opinions on the necessity of decarbonization. Moreover, there is significant skepticism about the feasibility of implementing such a broad ranging socio-economic strategy." 2) "If the state wants to secure the support of society in achieving carbon neutrality, it is necessary to conduct a nationwide informational campaign to improve awareness and engage government authorities (at varied scales), businesses, and population in cross-sectoral and developing regional policies aimed at socially just strategy implementation."
