90% of the cold emails I get are from freelance writers, and I ignore most of them. Here's the ONLY thing you need to get right in your email to grab my attention: ☝️Show me you understand our current content strategy. That's it. I don't care about your samples and testimonials until I can see you understand what we're doing right now. If you don't understand it, you won't help me scale it. I have lots of terrific writers in my network, and when I have a content brief lying around, I can contact them. If you're the one reaching out, you must show me that you'll get us results with minimal supervision.

So you don't like writing? I get that. I'm feel the same way - about other things. Such as DIY. The to-do list of tasks required in my house is getting longer, because I don't like doing them. Put up shelves to bring order to my garage? Put up words to bring order to my thinking? I'll take the latter, every time. (My garage is crying out for some decent shelving). Over 30 years in the workplace had shown me that I always came back to working with words. Which is why I choose to become a freelance writer in 2009. I want to focus on doing what I love. I hope you do, too.

A trend I've noticed in my work as a freelance writer is how stressed I get writing that first assignment for a new client. Whether I've done a trial assignment or not, I get smacked with imposter syndrome when I start working on my first assignment. I worry about maintaining brand tone. I stress over whether the formatting works. I second-guess if I'm skilled enough to do it or not. I won't lie. It's stressful! I stare at the Google Doc and am filled with doubt. I wonder if the work is for me. I wonder if working with this client will pan out. Spoiler alert: it always does. After I push past that first assignment, I realize I do have what it takes and I am skilled at what I'm doing. That fear of not knowing what I'm doing comes from my desire to do well. And I know now that I don't have to let that fear debilitate me. This experience has happened enough times that I can trust myself to do the work, push through, and create an incredible piece of work. What’s one of your favorite moments as a freelance writer? I’ll go first: when one of my health writing clients says no edits are needed on my draft. Being easy to work with is one of my business values. As part of that, I aim to provide drafts requiring fewer edits the longer I work with a client, eventually needing no or minimal edits per project. Seeing that play out (and seeing my clients save time on their content process) rocks!

A teeny tiny habit that helps me write better for clients: Keeping a personal style guide. I don’t mean the TOV guide or editorial strategy provided by them. I mean your own doc, where you note down the intricacies of writing for the client. Where you save their edits, comments, and emails. The bits that aren’t captured in their brand resources. Keeping a personal style guide stops you making the same mistakes for clients.
