For our 9th Day of Mindful Christmas we are doing charity shout outs. 🎄 A charity I got particularly connected to during my MScR is FareShare South West. As some of you may know, I spent one year of my academic career carrying out research on sustainable food systems in Bristol. Of course during that time FareShare’s work on surplus food redistribution could not go unnoticed. I was also a volunteer at the Wellspring Settlement Food Club, which partnered with this amazing charity to redistribute food to those suffering from food insecurity. Every year we waste over 3 million tonnes of perfectly good to eat food in the UK, which often has not even reached supermarket shelves before going to the bin. FareShare’s work not only helps avoiding waste, they also help individuals feel less isolated and have better diets, improving both physical and mental health. Their work inevitably helps the environment too, as for every tonne of surplus food they redistribute, they prevent 2 tonnes of CO2e and 2.66 million litres of water from being wasted. On #WorldEnvironmentDay we’re highlighting The Oxford Food Hub – an Oxfordshire based food surplus charity that works alongside wholesalers, farmers and growers supporting food banks, warm spaces, homeless shelter, mental health support charities and children’s hospices. Recently celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, the charity is seeking to partner with more farmers and growers in the area as demand continues to soar during the cost of living crisis. The Waste And Resources Action Programme’s 2022 annual survey found that total redistributed food has increased by around 27% compared to 2021, which equates to 70 million more meals redistributed in that year. In fact Oxfordshire NFU Member and third-generation growers Rectory Farm are long-serving suppliers of the Hub. Food donation agencies can explore hub and spoke model. One side there are established and time tested food donation entities like ISCKON, large temples, masjids, Gurudwaras which feed millions of people, young and old, daily. Then there are few warm hearted individuals who are spending their own reserves to feed few hundred hungry souls, eventually shutting operations after exhausting their funds and fundings. People are donating, without doubt, for this noble cause of hunger mitigation. Yet millions go to sleep hungry. This gap between demand and supply seems unfathomable. What if these giant food donation entities operate in a hub and spoke model? They can onboard these smaller lot of willing volunteers, who go around asking for donations for own food donation initiative, as their spokes. Large entities can become the central kitchen. People, willing to do the service of feeding hungry souls, start tieing up and source their food demand for their selected geographical location from these central kitchens. This would optimise freight logistics and a delivery van can be assigned to this volunteer to carry their demanded quota of food to their food distribution area. #hunger #hungerfornone #hungerrelief #hungerheroes #food

When you love food, it's natural to want to enjoy it, share it, learn from it, and not waste it. Food Stash rescues more food than ever before - the equivalent of more than 90,000 meals each month - and makes sure this nutritious food gets to where it’s needed through programs like our Rescued Food Market, and by delivering food to 35 community partner organizations for their much-needed programs. This is good food that wasn't sold because it didn’t look perfect, or because there was too much of it at a certain place and time. It takes time, strategy, resources, and a lot of cooperation to find this surplus food and quickly get it to where it’s needed - and this is work worth doing. World Food Day has been an internationally celebrated day since 1979. Over the last 40+ years, 150 countries have taken part in raising awareness of starvation and poor diets experienced all around the world. Riverside Foods supports FareShare Midlands; a national food charity that passes on good surplus food to around 8,500 charities, that use it to support millions of people in their communities. To date, Fareshare have redistributed 54,000 tonnes of food that would have otherwise gone to waste. Overruns: Extra products made beyond what was forecasted, often cheaper to keep the production line running. Mislabeled items: Products with packaging errors, like missing ingredients or allergen information. Relabeling is too costly, but we have the volunteer resources to repack and relabel these items. #WISF has announced the 2023 CAN DO Challenge, a 6-week charitable initiative taking place Oct. 17 – Nov. 28 to encourage professionals and companies across the #securityindustry to combat food insecurity during the holiday season. CAN DO – spearheaded by the SIA WISF UpliftHER Subcommittee – is about alleviating hunger as part of our industry’s collective commitment to human safety and well-being. Security professionals and organizations can participate by donating “cans” or “doing” acts – like delivering or serving meals. “Women are more likely to suffer from food insecurity than men and are biologically more prone to malnutrition. Since the first CAN DO Challenge in 2020, this annual giveback event has helped nourish thousands of America’s most vulnerable, thanks to the generosity of SIA members,” said Margie Gurwin, SIA WISF UpliftHER Subcommittee co-chair and owner of Content Creation Partners. “This year, we’re making it easier for individuals to participate and contribute through partnerships with Philadelphia-based Philabundance and New York City’s Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries (RMM),” explained Liz Gyuris, UpliftHER co-chair and channel engagement manager at Rajant Corporation. “People can shop virtually for grocery items on the Philabundance site or choose items from RMM’s Amazon Wish List and ship them directly to the ministry. It's excellent to see that Lidl GB is doing its part to reduce food insecurity within the UK. As part of their 'Community Impact Policy' they are tackling food insecurity, both nationally and locally to support those hit by the cost-of-living crisis. They've committed to a surplus of food, financial support, and sending customer-donated food. They have released their community impact report that makes for an interesting read - https://lnkd.in/eBSsKNFJ Key Points: 🍎Lidl has donated over 260,000 meals donated to families during the May (2024) Bank holidays 🍌In 2023, Lidl donated over 10 million meals to local charities including customer donations and surplus. 🍊Since introducing their 'Good to Give' Trustmark in June 2022, there has been a 25% increase in customer food donations for local charities. In 2023, Lidl donated over 1 million frozen meals to 721 good causes nationwide. 🥑Their Blue Returns donation scheme is set to save 800 tonnes of food waste annually.
