Nourishing Our Country. $1 = 2 meals

About us

Founded by Ronni Kahn AO in 2004, OzHarvest is Australia’s leading food rescue organisation with a driving purpose to ‘Nourish our Country’. Our mission is to stop food waste, feed people in need and protect our planet by championing the value of food and driving change at all levels of society. The impact of our work is strongly aligned to achieving five United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. OzHarvest is best known for our iconic yellow food rescue vans which save over 250 tonnes of good food every week and deliver it direct to charities that feed people in need. We’re also creating positive change through three national education programs (FEAST, NEST and Nourish), and through our advocacy work raising awareness about food security and doing whatever we can to halve Australia’s food waste by 2030. Innovation is part of our DNA and we’re always looking to add value to what we do and find new ways to tackle food waste and feed hungry people. We’re pioneering social impact projects from free supermarkets (OzHarvest Market) and a restaurant (Refettorio OzHarvest) that feeds people in need and creating revenue generating products via OzHarvest Ventures. Our unique for-impact, food rescue model has been implemented across the globe in New Zealand, UK, South Africa, Vietnam and Japan. Every $1 donated allows OzHarvest to deliver 2 meals to people in need.

Our tiny Refettorio OzHarvest Sydney was bursting at the seams this morning, as we welcomed HRH Queen Camilla, her team and the media to get a glimpse of what we do. The sun was shining, and the crowds gathered outside as Ronni introduced the Queen to our partners, chef ambassadors and board members, before heading into the kitchen to see what was cooking. Her Majesty enjoyed getting involved with the lunch prep, helping our chefs and wearing a bright yellow apron!    Upstairs, our wonderful volunteers were on hand to share their experiences and talk about the community we serve every day. The highlight was sitting down at the table to share stories and conversations with some of the Refettorio’s regular lunchtime guests over a delicious vegetarian lunch made from rescued food.   The Queen first visited OzHarvest HQ back in 2015, she loved what we do so much that agreed to be the Patron of UKHarvest which was launched in 2017. The King and Queen are both great advocates for fighting food waste and are doing great work in the UK with the Coronation Food Project, which seeks to bridge the gap between food waste and food need. Protecting people and planet – which aligns perfectly with our mission. For the third year in a row, IHG Hotels & Resorts have made a huge impact with their Stay For Good campaign. Throughout September, $1 from every night booked at their hotels was donated to OzHarvest, helping us deliver 2 meals to someone in need.   Thanks to their wonderful support, we can deliver an incredible 120,872 additional meals! And our wonderful friends at KiwiHarvest were part of this initiative too, receiving 23,558 meals to support those in need in New Zealand.   We are deeply grateful to IHG for their ongoing commitment to helping us ‘Nourish Our Country’ and for everyone who booked, and stayed for good during September!

Australia has a hidden crisis – shockingly, half of all low-income households are now going hungry. Released today, the Foodbank Australia Hunger Report confirms the growing divide across the country that we see firsthand every day. While some households have managed to weather the ongoing cost of living crisis, the reality is that low-income households are struggling now more than ever. The survey shows:   - Half of all low-income households in Australia are now experiencing food insecurity.  - More than half (59%) of food insecure households are experiencing the most extreme form of food insecurity: regularly skipping meals or going entire days without eating.  - Single-parent households are the hardest hit with two thirds facing food insecurity.  - Family and friends are filling the hunger gap less and less – and people are turning to food relief more than ever before.  - 53% of food insecure households are seeking relief more often than a year ago, and charities are struggling to keep up.  - 3.4 million households have experienced food insecurity in the last year.    Along with our friends in the food relief sector, OzHarvest is working hard to deliver food to 1,500 charities across the country. But it’s not enough – we know that charities can’t meet demand, and we’ve got 848 charities on our waitlist. Too many people are slipping through the cracks, unable to access the help they need.  We know that poverty is on the rise in Australia, and access to food is very tightly linked to income.  So, we’re calling on the Federal Government to step up and tackle poverty head-on. While the solutions are complex, a huge difference can be made through: increasing social support payments, securing affordable housing, improving education and employment. Unless we fix the core of this issue, nothing will change. In the meantime, all levels of government need to support the food relief sector to meet this rising and heartbreaking demand. We’re working on something big to address the hunger crisis, watch this space! Read the full report on Foodbank's website. #SDG1 #SDG2 #ZeroHunger #FoodbankHungerReport2024 #FoodRelief #BeKind * Now in 11th year, the Foodbank Hunger Report is a nation-wide survey on food insecurity. Research is conducted through an online survey of 4,260 Australians. Samples are nationally representative by age, gender and location and uses the internationally-recognised United States Department of Agriculture Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM).

Did you know 1 in 6 children in Australia live below the poverty line? This means thousands of kids face food insecurity every day. At OzHarvest, we do everything we can to combat this, by delivering over 300 tonnes of food each week to people experiencing food insecurity. While we know the extra groceries help, it's not enough – we need systemic change. We're calling on the government to #RaiseTheRate and increase income support payments, especially for job seekers and single parents. Research shows that raising these payments can help pull people out of poverty and increase access to better, healthier food. It's a key step toward breaking the poverty cycle. If you agree more needs to be done, take time this Anti-Poverty Week to let your local Member of Parliament know. Let's not just acknowledge poverty but act to end it.  #antipovertyweek #RaiseTheRate #SDG1

There are so many wonderful ways for organisations to get behind our cause. A great example is the incredible support we receive from our partner AGL who help us feed more people in need through our food rescue operations and recently installed solar panels on the roof of our Melbourne HQ. How lucky are we! These panels will boost our sustainability and help reduce our energy bills —thank you AGL!

In 2014, OzHarvest's NEST program was launched because we identified a need to upskill our food rescue recipients to utilise the nourishing food they received from us💛 Ten years later NEST has evolved into Australia's leading nutrition education and food literacy program and we are pleased to share that we recently reached 10,000 participants! NEST is our Nutrition Education and Skills Training program. Across 6-weeks our team of nutritionists and dietitians teach their community tips and tricks on how we can still eat healthy even on a tight budget. We are grateful to have reached 10,000 participants, but with the rising cost of living, we want to reach thousands more. For more information or to get involved, check out: ozharvest.org/nest
