When I was in 12th standard, these kids were in 1st standard and now when they reached 12th - they interned at my company :)
Last week, our 16 year old interns finished their 6 week summer internship with us.
They were all super smart, had very high standards for their own work and high on energy.
Here are 3 things I learnt from them:
1. At first, I didn’t want to overburden them since they were school students after all, so I only gave them one project each.
I realised they weren’t excited enough, in fact even seemingly bored - so in addition, I started giving a secondary project with multiple tasks.
Just as in school we have a timetable of a variety of subjects, even at work it’s important to have a variation of things to do.
2. With many adults, I’ve seen people raise their hands and say, “oh, I don’t know how to do this.”
If they could find the answer on the internet, they would - they’d quickly YouTube a tutorial, learn, experiment and then show us the result.
Google and AI were their best friends and it meant we were getting much higher productivity.
3. School doesn’t allow phones, so they didn’t have the terrible habit we have as adults to doom scroll every once in a while to break the monotony during work. They had lots of fun and giggled throughout the internship, but it was because they kept each other entertained and didn’t need social media to do that.
We will miss their giggles and their reels and their daily catch ups at office, I don’t think they themselves realise how fabulous they were :)
