Senior Research Fellow at Institute for Employment Studies| HR Magazine Most Influential Thinker 2022, 2023 and 2024
Today is my 6 year Institute for Employment Studies anniversary! Over the 6 years here have been some of my highlights: Our PURPOSE research programme into #obesity #stigma in #employment was a real insight into how people living with obesity are treated in the #workplace and what #policy makers, #employers, #healthcare #professionals and #individuals can do to improve #work #outcomes for this group. Our research also looked at 2 European countries to see what (if any) learning can be learnt...there is still a long way to go (https://lnkd.in/eEawHNRy) #Covid has been a big part of the IES working life-both in changes of offices and working from home, but also the opportunity it provided for work - including the #working from #home #wellbeing survey that we undertook at the start of #lockdown (https://lnkd.in/eQ8teVhN), to a longer term #WorkAfterLockdown research project (https://lnkd.in/eJtucWfB), and a range of case studies of a coaching for wellbeing service (https://lnkd.in/euRm6pwn). One project that was a little more out of my comfort zone, but pushed me into an important field of inquiry was our #Progression in #Employment research into the low skilled, low paid workforce, and what #employers can do to improve progression-a debate that is still incredibly relevant today: (https://lnkd.in/eRbBrDzz) I've had a chance to further my research into #workplace #wellbeing, looking into #counselling and #EAPs (https://lnkd.in/eTJMQy4n), wellbeing #interventions (https://lnkd.in/gMziMWBs), and the wellbeing of specific #employee cohorts: (https://lnkd.in/ey8di4GJ) and (https://lnkd.in/dpFU8WU). I've also been able to talk about a topic close to my heart - #LineManagers, and have written a number of perspective thought pieces on this topic. But the argument still stands today - line managers need to be 'hugged' and not 'squeezed': https://lnkd.in/enJBx8-m) I hope there will be more years yet where I can continue to research, learn and develop knowledge and insights in these areas. One thing that really makes IES is the people-thanks to my wonderful colleagues, past and present who have supported me, challenged me and worked with me towards many of these outputs. I would like to thank Stephen Bevan especially, for his management, guidance, patience (!) and making me the researcher and communicator I am today. I'm lucky to have worked with you.

Recovery Friendly Workplaces Colorado is pioneering a new initiative to create recovery-friendly workplaces. With Governor Jared Polis's recent legislation, the state will invest $1.5 million over the next four years to support employers in establishing environments conducive to recovery from substance use disorders. This program, managed by the Center for Health, Work, and Environment at the Colorado School of Public Health, aims to assist companies in addressing mental and behavioral health challenges among their workforce. Employers participating in the program will receive guidance on improving workplace policies, planning inclusive events, and fostering open discussions on mental health. The goal is to support workers in recovery and prevent substance misuse through proactive workplace interventions. This initiative represents a collaborative effort between public and private sectors to enhance worker well-being, reduce turnover, and lower healthcare costs. By creating supportive work environments, Colorado aims to improve productivity and expand the labor force, ultimately benefiting employees, employers, and the broader community. #RecoveryFriendlyWorkplaces #MentalHealth #WorkerSupport #NASP #EHS

I empower organizations to transform culture, increase retention and productivity by building trust. | Professional Wellness Consultant| Sexual Health Education Consultant| HUB, MBE,DBE,WBE Cert.
Happy Wednesday, y'all! As we continue our journey through Women's History Month, yesterday's focus on the pivotal role of sexual health education highlighted a crucial aspect of holistic wellness. Today, we pivot back to the core of professional wellness consulting, carrying forward the theme of empowerment and inclusivity. Creating an inclusive work environment is not just about acknowledging diversity; it's about actively fostering a space where every voice is heard, and every individual feels safe and supported. This foundation of emotional safety is critical for a thriving workplace, where trust and collaboration can flourish. Inclusivity in the workplace goes hand in hand with our discussions on sexual health education. Both are about recognizing and addressing the full spectrum of human needs and experiences. As we advocate for comprehensive wellness, let's remember that inclusivity is key to creating environments where everyone, regardless of their background or personal challenges, can thrive. How is your organization making strides towards being more inclusive? What practices have you found effective in nurturing an emotionally safe and supportive workplace? Let's share insights and continue to learn from each other. Looking forward to your thoughts!! #leadershipdevelopment #organizationalculture #emotionalsafety #inclusivitymatters #professionalwellness

Today, Amy Miller, SHRM-SCP, CVP's Senior Manager of Health Research & Technology, will present at the 2024 Detroit Opioid & SUD Summit: Balancing Acts: Navigating Substance Use Disorders, Opioids, and Workplace Wellness. In her session "Building Bridges: Empowering People in Recovery through Employee and Employer Support and Intentional Partnership," Amy will be joined by Keoshia Banks, a Program Manager from the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI), and Ryan "RJ" James, a Peer Recovery Coach from the Community Recovery Alliance, to discuss strategies for empowering people in recovery through intentional partnerships and workplace support. As Michigan continues to grapple with high rates of substance-related deaths, recovery-friendly workplaces serve as a vital cornerstone for long-term recovery. These workplaces reduce the risk of relapse, expand the labor force, improve well-being, and help develop sustainable, inclusive communities while reducing employee turnover and healthcare costs. The annual summit, organized by the Southeast Michigan Alliance for Addiction-Free Communities, Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN), Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI), and the Michigan Recovery Friendly Workplace Initiative (MRFW), explores innovative and effective programs that address the substance use crisis in diverse communities to broaden understanding, reduce stigma, and foster open communication. CVP develops and implements evidence-based solutions that directly impact the lives of those experiencing SUD, advancing health equity and improving community health. Our projects actively drive meaningful change, empowering our partner agencies to achieve lasting results for the populations they serve. #ThoughtLeadership #RecoveryFriendlyWorkplace #SubstanceUseDisorder #WorkplaceWellness #BuildingBridges #CVPHealthResearchAndTechnology
