Today I attended the first day of the National Association of Black Social Workers (NASBW) conference. Not only am I excited to attend for the first time—Dr. Sapphire Boone has graciously invited me to co-present on a topic close to my heart: "Reimagining Competence and Exploring Alternative Pathways to Licensure through Policy Advocacy." This presentation is not just a speaking opportunity for me; it's a chance to shine a light on the crucial work done in support of SB871, alongside dedicated advocates. It's a narrative about channeling my rage into productive advocacy, inspired by the trailblazers of the #STOPASWB movement. The National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW) has historically been a vocal critic of the current licensure process, yet, all too often, their voices are excluded from policy discussions. This presentation is my homage to those pioneers, a reminder to everyone in attendance—and to the broader Social Work Field—that the voices of black social workers are indispensable, especially in legislative arenas. To say I'm honored is an understatement. This is a moment of humility and pride—a chance to remind us all that standing on the shoulders of giants gives us the vantage point not just to see further, but to speak louder and more effectively. As I prepare for my presentation tomorrow, I am reminded of the power of advocacy, the importance of inclusive dialogue, and the enduring strength of a community united for change. Here's to making every moment count! #NASBW56 #SocialWork #PolicyAdvocacy #ABSW #SocialWorkLicensure #CommunityChange

Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th each year and marks the famous day in 1865 when the enslaved people of Texas learned they were finally free, a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was delivered by President Lincoln. Juneteenth symbolizes the hard fought end of slavery in the United States. The holiday is a time for modern Americans to reflect on the struggles of African Americans throughout our history and to celebrate their culture and progress. In recent years, Juneteenth has been recognized as a federal holiday, promoting freedom and America's ongoing journey towards equality. Century Park Associates prides itself on the cultivation of a diverse workforce, and in this regard, Juneteenth holds special significance. Celebrating Juneteenth acknowledges the diverse histories and contributions of all within our communities, reinforcing the company’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and enhancing our sense of unity and family. Recognizing Juneteenth educates and enriches us all, creating more knowledgable and empathetic associates, and a thriving, respectful, and cohesive workplace. #CenturyParkCares #Juneteenth #DEIB #CenturyParkAssociates

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth – a day of reflection, education, and celebration. But it's also a day to acknowledge the ongoing struggle for equality. Did you know? Among the 33.1 million small businesses in the country, only 13.2% (3.7 million) are Black-owned. Even more concerning, only a tiny fraction (roughly 161,000) of these Black-owned businesses have more than one employee and generate significant revenue. At Kingdom Bonding, these statistics fuel our mission. We're dedicated to raising these numbers and empowering Black-owned businesses in the construction industry. The journey continues, and we won't stop until we make a real impact. Click here to see the stats👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/eXNjm6bx

On this Juneteenth, Ōmcare takes a moment to reflect on the profound significance of this day in American history. The day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free...two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. As we commemorate this moment in American history, we must also confront the harsh reality that the legacy of slavery and systemic racism persists in our society today. The fight for true equality, justice, and freedom remains an ongoing struggle. At Ōmcare, we firmly believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords – they are core values that we must actively embody and champion each and every day. We are committed to creating a workplace culture where every employee, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background, feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their whole selves to work. But we recognize that this commitment must extend beyond the confines of our organization. We have a responsibility to be advocates for change in our communities and in society at large. We invite all of our employees, partners, and customers to join us in reflecting on the significance of Juneteenth, engaging in honest and courageous conversations about race and justice, and taking meaningful steps to create a more equitable world.

In today's globalized society, it is more important than ever to educate people about human rights so that they can defend principles of equality, fairness, and dignity in all interactions. It provides the tools for individuals to stand up against prejudice and injustice, raises consciousness about and advocacy for human rights, cultivates an environment where everyone feels welcome, and inspires people to get involved in their communities to effect positive social and political change. In the words of John Lennon, "Imagine all the people living life in peace." Everyone, not only activists, can benefit from this instruction. We can make a real difference by incorporating human rights values into everything we do, from classrooms to offices. A line from Janis Joplin's song keeps playing in my head: "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose." Recognizing and respecting everyone's rights can become our reality if we dedicate ourselves to studying, teaching, and raising awareness of human rights.

✊🏿🧡 CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH: Thank you to the Black Culture Collective at Orange County Social Services Agency for having The OCEA Hot Dog Wagon at their Juneteenth Celebration Wednesday, June 19! SSA’s Black Culture Collective consists of about 60 members, and is a revamp of the former African American Roundtable, which was established at SSA in the 90’s. The group assembled the lunch to celebrate Juneteenth—a recognition of June 19, 1865—when news of freedom reached enslaved people in Texas, marking a pivotal moment in American history. Juneteenth celebrates liberation, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality. “It was a great turnout. We had people coming from different locations—from Garden Grove, OCPC, Santa Ana—not just Eckhoff,” said Rebecca Polee, a Staff Specialist in Children & Family Services at SSA, and a member of the Black Culture Collective. “We sometimes get so involved and invested in the work and the service that we do. It’s nice to have this downtime, to engage, socialize, and bring some history.” Juneteenth became a federally-recognized holiday in 2021, and subsequently a State holiday. The recognition of Juneteenth as a holiday was prioritized by our membership and included in our proposal to the County during negotiations in 2023. The County initially refused, later offering Juneteenth if another holiday or 20 hours from PIP were forfeited. The negotiations team opposed these concessions and suggested alternative solutions, which the County rejected. Negotiations continued, highlighting that every gain requires trade-offs. If establishing Juneteenth as a holiday is of interest to you, please say so when the next negotiations survey comes your way prior to us returning to the table in 2026. 3moJuneteenth Day in commemorating the freedom of enslaved African Americans and advocating for the democratic rights of individuals worldwide. It is disheartening to note that according to the Global Slavery Index 2023, approximately 50 million people are still living in slavery around the world. This highlights the urgent need to address this issue and promote values that uphold democratic rights. It is evident that countries with high rates of slavery often lack democratic principles. Upholding the rights of individuals is crucial in building a more equitable society for all. As employee of Pacer Staffing, I continue to stand in support of these values and work towards a world where freedom and democratic rights.
