New York City's first-ever Environmental Justice NYC Report and Mapping Tool is a pioneering resource for identifying and addressing environmental justice action across the city's five boroughs. With over 100 layers of data on environmental and health burdens and benefits, Buro Happold worked with the NYC Mayor's Office of Climate & Environmental Justice to compile this comprehensive tool that explores environmental hazards in New York City, from toxin exposure and summer heat vulnerability to flood risks and transit access. Sarah Smyth, a senior consultant at Buro Happold, recently discussed the implications of historic environmental inequity with the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri). “That historical connection is really important to make the argument for why targeted investment and action is necessary,” says Sarah. “Because these things just don’t go away.” The report reinforces long-standing claims by environmental justice (EJ) advocates and researchers that low-income residents and communities of color are most vulnerable to environmental inequities. “Unlike other EJ mapping tools,” says Sarah, “the EJNYC Mapping Tool takes a broader perspective on these issues, as the community was deeply involved in identifying them from the start.” Learn more about the EJNYC Report and Mapping Tool: https://buro.im/4eyTdan #BuroHappold #ClimateWeekNYC #Advisory #EnvironmentalJustice #NYC #NewYork #EJNYC #ESRI

We take pride in overcoming #environmental challenges on projects. When we completed the County of Simcoe Simcoe Road Urbanization Project, the project presented environmental challenges due to the proximity to natural watercourses and a dense wooded area. On top of safeguarding the environment of this area, we were able to complete the project with effective #StakeholderEngagement, #TrafficManagement, and #RegulatoryCompliance. The recent Canadian recognition of a waterway's legal personhood invites reflection on our relationship with nature's elements. The Magpie River, now seen as a legal entity, represents a growing global movement to grant environmental features certain rights, posing new challenges for project development. As stewards of these natural assets, we must engage in proactive dialogue to ensure that legal personhood serves as a constructive tool rather than a hindrance. The path forward requires balanced and insightful governance to harmonize ecological preservation with societal advancement. Southern Arizona has a network of cooling centers, but as more extreme heat days drive demand, there are challenges in access, visibility, and capacity. These climate change effects are clear, as are the impacts of inaction, which is why Justicia Juntos, an initiative led by Amistades, Inc., is a great model for cities seeking meaningful partnerships that result in true community change. Learn more about how this project leveraged an Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem Solving Cooperative Agreement grant award from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to combat the effects of extreme heat on Latino communities in the city of Tucson, AZ. https://lnkd.in/ecGVEuxY #localinfrastructurehub #federalgrants #climateimpacts #equitableaccess
