Are you disappointed by one of your team member's performance? Perhaps they don't seem engaged? You remember they did well in their previous role, but they appear to be struggling in this one. Do you now doubt their capabilities? Or are you thinking they are lazy/unmotivated? Are you even questioning their future at your company? Hang on a moment! Read Ryan Anderson's story below describing a misaligned role he once had. The mismatch could have taken his career off track. Think again about your own unengaged or struggling team member: - What have they excelled at in the past which helped build their confidence? - What projects have they been excited by and spent more time on? - What are their top skills and strengths and are they using them in this role? Before considering any move that might derail someone's career progression, consider how well the person fits their current role. These days, positions can morph substantially over just a few months based on: - changing market/customer demands or - a recent hire shifts some team members' responsibilities or - newly deployed technologies (which a person isn't trained for or they are interested to develop different skills). This role might not be a good match for this person anymore. However, what key skills do they have? What else might they flourish doing? What other position could be a good fit instead? Research has long shown that when employees are aligned with their skills and strengths they engage more and the business benefits -- showing 10% to 19% increases in sales and 14% to 29% increases in profit [Gallup 2016]. Since the skills needed to complete many/most tasks and roles are changing, managers' responsibilities must encompass (regularly) mapping and matching team members' skills to their work, even crafting the role to their skills. Don't wait for your team member to speak up, as Ryan luckily did. Find out what is going on and figure out how and where they can do their best work. Perhaps there isn't a fit at your company anymore, but there is much to discuss and explore first! Remember: Modern work is dynamic. Projects and tasks are evolving. Roles are increasingly organic. As I stand at the cusp of a new chapter, I want to take a moment to reflect on my journey as the Head of Customer Success and warmly embrace my upcoming role as AVP, Strategic Accounts. Wow, what a ride it's been in my last role. It pushed me to my limits, taught me to bounce back, and really hammered home how crucial it is to keep relationships at the forefront of everything. Every chat, every bit of feedback, and every planning session really deepened my grasp on putting our customers first. I've picked up a ton of insights along the way, but the biggies would have to be the magic of really listening, getting creative with solutions, and always leading with a bit of kindness. These lessons have been gold, touching both my work and personal life. Now, stepping into the new shoes, I'm bringing all those lessons with me, plus a whole lot of buzz for what's coming. This new spot is all about getting even closer to what our clients need, coming up with innovative ideas, and pushing growth through solid partnerships. I'm all in and can't wait to use what I've learned to really make a splash. Things I stopped buying since I left my full-time retail management job $$$ - Coffee at Starbucks ($5/cup * 5 days/week = $1,200/year)  - Spinach feta wrap or sandwich ($4 * 5 days/week = $960/year)  - Lunch at Panda Express or Tokyo Joe’s ($15 * 5 = $3,600/year)  - Cloths from new collections with employee discount ($200/month = $2,400/year) - New makeup at Sephora ($100/month = $1,200/year)  - Gas to get to work ($30/week = $1,440/year)  - Vehicle maintenance ($50/month = $600/year)  - Car insurance ($50/month = $600/year) Total: $12,000/year. Out of site, out of mind. Working from home decreases my desire to shop exponentially. Now, instead of eating out and shopping, I can max out my IRA. It’s also better for the environment. We need to rethink the validity of the WORK — CONSUME — WORK cycle. It doesn’t serve us as people and it doesn’t serve the planet at large. It only serves big corporations. P.S. I haven’t posted recently about my day job, so here’s an update!! Yesterday we officially opened the 3rd brick and mortar location! Crazy right? In ONE year we have opened three completely new stores starting from less than nothing to be fully built, stocked, merchandised, staffed, and operating. This experience has been somewhat of a challenge, yet in my opinion has also been a fairly easy achievement. And no, it hasn’t been easy in the sense that it’s easy work or a simple feat to undertake. You see, it’s all about how you approach things. If you approach things with the confidence that you can accomplish any task necessary, you and your staff will not only be more effective at doing so, but it will be more fulfilling as well.

It’s been almost 2 mos. since I kicked off 3 contracts as a Fractional CMO working with some of the most talented, emotionally-intelligent, and creative folks. I have loved every second of it. Here’s what I’ve been up to: >> Client 1: Developing a brand strategy & finalizing positioning, conducting market research & product validation, and creating a business plan for a SaaS platform that will help restaurants solve a big issue. Beta testing kicks off soon! 🚀 >> Client 2: Conducting a comprehensive agency analysis re: brand & positioning, marketing, and business development. Next up: Directing and leading a 7-month strategic overhaul to ensure long-term success. ⬆ >> Client 3: Implementing an organizational operating system for an early-stage creative agency, finalizing brand strategy & positioning, delivering business growth frameworks, and conducting weekly sales mentoring sessions along with an outbound playbook to ensure growth with their target markets and ICPs. 🔥 I have had an absolute blast in my new role as a fractional CMO. I like the variety and can’t stop thinking about ways to deliver long-term value to my clients, while supporting their teams. In return, the flexibility in my schedule has enabled me to spend more quality time with my family, travel more, and dive in to some of my personal passions. It’s been a dream come true. Insanely grateful I get to wake up every day and do what I do. The average person spends 90k hours or 1/3 of their life working. If you're unhappy with your current work situation, a gentle reminder that you are the director of your life. Don't let the comfort or fear handcuff you to spending your time doing anything other than what lights you up inside. Life is way too damn short for that. 👏
