Predicting the future has been a human pastime for as long as humanity has had a future. From Roman augury to the I Ching, divinatory practices have been a mainstay of human culture and political cosmology. As the practical applications of predictive AI models take hold in banking, policing, and climate policy, this talk presents prediction as a narrative process that strengths political belief. Viewing AI this way reopens space to wrestle with our malleability as individuals and collectives; to reassert what Mark Fisher termed “the plasticity of reality”. Howard Melnyczuk is an artist, writer, and researcher investigating the way sociopolitical structures are maintained through technology and collective narratives. His practice uses software and film to explore technology as a set of cultural products that embody historical decisions and shape patterns of thought. His research centres on narratives around technology that intersect with capitalism and colonialism, often by looking at folk practices that account for alternative histories and open space for communal perspectives from the bottom up.

Erich Fromm's insight from half a century ago still echoes loudly today. He argued for a societal shift from 'having' to 'being.' This idea isn't just philosophical; it's practical. We're more than our possessions; we are our passions, relationships, and contributions. This isn't about accumulating things; it's about cultivating self. Magic happens when we focus on being, not having. Work becomes an expression of who we are, crafted with love and purpose. It's no longer a task but a part of our identity. And In an era where AI is reshaping professions, our human touch becomes invaluable. It's a call to embrace our humanity in an increasingly automated world. Question: How can shifting our focus from what we have to who we are transform the way we experience work, relationships, and our overall sense of purpose in an AI-dominated world.

In the not-so-distant future, we may witness the rise of neo-luddites, a modern iteration of a very old resistance. This group will likely consist of former “creatives” and other such individuals who view the AI transformation of society with a mix of skepticism and envy. As society shifts toward an increasingly digital and AI-driven landscape, these sore losers may begin to voice their dissent loudly, yearning for the so called “good ol days” of “pure, human artistry”. Their resistance will serve as a poignant reminder that ego is intrinsically linked to creative endeavors— and that this is a hump in which modern humans must ultimately learn to overcome.

I'm an avid transhumanist, so I'm loving The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil! In this book, he describes the six epochs of the universe, from simple particles to pure consciousness: 1. Physics and Chemistry – The origins of our universe, where simple particles form the building blocks for future complexity. 2. Biology and DNA – Life emerges as self-replicating organisms develop, evolving through natural selection. 3. Brains – Complex biological brains evolve, capable of greater cognitive function and abstract thinking. 4. Technology – Human beings invent tools and machines, extending our capabilities beyond biology. 5. The Merger of Human and Machine Intelligence – The convergence of human biological intelligence with AI, enhancing and augmenting human abilities. 6. The Universe Wakes Up – Matter and energy in the universe become saturated with intelligence, as technology and consciousness become ubiquitous. We're currently at the Fourth Epoch, where technology is accelerating exponentially and AI is on the verge of transforming everything. As we move towards the Fifth Epoch, the merger of human and machine intelligence could redefine the boundaries of what it means to be human.
