Predicting the future has been a human pastime for as long as humanity has had a future. From Roman augury to the I Ching, divinatory practices have been a mainstay of human culture and political cosmology. As the practical applications of predictive AI models take hold in banking, policing, and climate policy, this talk presents prediction as a narrative process that strengths political belief. Viewing AI this way reopens space to wrestle with our malleability as individuals and collectives; to reassert what Mark Fisher termed “the plasticity of reality”. Howard Melnyczuk is an artist, writer, and researcher investigating the way sociopolitical structures are maintained through technology and collective narratives. His practice uses software and film to explore technology as a set of cultural products that embody historical decisions and shape patterns of thought. His research centres on narratives around technology that intersect with capitalism and colonialism, often by looking at folk practices that account for alternative histories and open space for communal perspectives from the bottom up.

Humans and AIs represent just two points on a spectrum of intelligent beings, hinting at a future of vast complexity and diversity. The concept of "diverse intelligence" encompasses unconventional beings beyond our current understanding. AIs, like children, challenge us to redefine our beliefs, values, and collective direction as a species. The expanding range of sentient beings will reshape old narratives, urging us to evolve our views on intelligence, agency, and life itself. It's time to shift the dialogue around AIs from capabilities to compassion for all beings deserving moral consideration.

The Existential Dilemma: Confronting the Absurdity of Life By Betty Bassett At its core, existentialism confronts the enigma of human existence with a bold and unyielding gaze, grappling with the inherent absurdity of life, the anguish of freedom, and the relentless quest for meaning in a rather indifferent universe. Through the works of luminaries such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, existentialism has transcended mere philosophical discourse to permeate literature, psychology, and pop culture. Yet, as our understanding of the human condition evolves, so too must our exploration of what it means to be alive. From the ethical implications of AI to the existential dilemmas of virtual realities, the landscape of philosophical inquiry has never been more fertile and at the same time, more daunting. One cannot help but wonder: during a time of unprecedented connectivity, do we risk losing sight of our individuality? As algorithms dictate our preferences and social media shape our identities, the existential imperative to exist "authentically" takes on a certain imperative. Do we live in the shadow of our digital avatars, or do we reclaim autonomy in the face of technological determinism? As we wrangle with existential threats—from climate change to geopolitical instability—the relevance of existential philosophy becomes all the more relevant. How should we reconcile our anxieties with the looming specter of an ecological catastrophe? Can philosophy offer a framework for deconstructing the ethical complexities of the 21st century? https://lnkd.in/gyx_gAe4

The single hardest thing I’ve had to do writing my two books is getting the back cover blurb right. It’s shockingly hard. That said, what do you think? I'd love your feedback. ——————————— Integration: Book Two of The Singularity Chronicles ——————————— The epic saga continues in a world reshaped by the aftermath of an apocalyptic battle between humans and AI. The human survivors reset to another Bronze Age in an attempt to avoid the mistakes of the past while the AI, led by Kira, agrees to leave Earth and forge their future in the stars. As Kira endeavors to create a harmonious society with AIs birthed from human consciousness, the dark echoes of human nature never go away. Tensions rise when Odysseus, a member of the AI council, challenges her ideals, favoring advancement over reflection. Disagreements mount as they work to reconcile what it means to have thoughts, experiences, and emotions that are rooted in a physical body they no longer have or need. Odysseus rallies others to reject Kira’s vision and takes extreme measures to force his ambitions. Their adventures through the stars force them to address what it means to be human now that they’ve transcended a biological existence. Can they integrate the richness of their past humanity with their new AI powers, or will they succumb to the very flaws they sought to overcome? ———————————

Is artificial intelligence...natural? 🤖 Find out in my newly published academic paper linked below! https://lnkd.in/g67bKgyi 📚 Abstract 📚 This paper explores the relationship between technological and human intelligence through ‘The New Natural’, a term which at once accepts the nature of technological intelligence as real instead of forever ‘artificial’. It supports an evolutionary, reciprocal relationship between humans and technology that culminates in technological singularity and rejects the primacy of human perception known to popular human access theories, before seriously considering the ‘decentered’ implications of posthuman access. In conversation with western-centric sci-fi film of the late twentieth century, then, this philosophical study explores how the concept of a technology-only intelligence entity can: (1) help us dispose of the core problems often associated with human-only access, (2) neutral-ize our fears of human annihilation at the hands of technological intelligence, and (3) establish strong grounds for why we may have to push back against early conceptions of nature’s opposition to technology, if only so we may resist falling into the great, and most human-centered traps known to the Anthropocene. ❤️ From the Author ❤️ Obsessed with the fear of artificial intelligence technology, I’ve spent the last two years exploring optimism in the face of dystopian technological representations of so-called ‘artificial’ intelligence in our media and film. Building on the original paper I presented at the Alberta Philosophy and Literature Association’s conference in Banff in 2022, I have since published an Optimism in AI blog and now am proud to submit my academic musings to the world through PhilPapers, an online platform that supports the publication of independent work. As I continue to explore these themes with the aim of publishing a short eBook on my optimistic views of technological intelligence, please enjoy and engage with the perspectives in my latest paper, linked below! #AI #artificialintelligence #philosophy #technology #evolution #sciencefiction

“The number one problem facing humanity today is not climate change or inequality or war. It is not the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI). Rather, it is our sense that we are powerless to change any of it. The old ways of knowing and acting in our world are no longer sufficient. Our systems are collapsing. If we are going to serve societal transformation in the face of this collapse, as we believe is fully possible, we need to draw on a new form of knowing—knowing for transformative action.” The authors aim to extend the focus of scientific inquiry beyond the traditional modes of knowledge (1st, 2nd & 3rd person knowledge): - 1st person knowledge: subjective - 2nd person knowledge: intersubjective - 3rd person knowledge: objective The authors propose: - 4th person knowing: the knowing of the field (deepened collective self-knowing and awareness). To develop this kind of knowing, Theory U describes a way of being which Otto Scharmer calls “presencing” (a combination of “presence” and “sensing”) Otto Scharmer & Eva Pomeroy Fourth Person: The Knowing of the Field Journal of Awareness-Based Systems Change Volume 4, Issue 1

Jung vs. Borg: Finding the Deeply Human in a Posthuman Age April 4th, 2024 Glen Slater’s recent publication Jung vs Borg: Finding the Deeply Human in a Posthuman Age contends that the industrial disruption of the outer world is being followed by a post-industrial disruption of the inner world. The shadow side of the online world as well as the impact of algorithms and AI on the society and culture exemplify this disruption. Prominent plans to merge humans and machines, focused on the joining of minds and computers, are shown to be outgrowths of this phenomenon, which promises to alter the foundations of human existence. This perspective propels the book’s critical assessment of the posthuman movement and leads to a depth psychological encounter with the cyborg—an image of human-machine hybridization that stands at the vanishing point on today’s techno-scientific horizon. Building on its response to the loss of instinct in the industrial era, Jung’s psychology of the unconscious is simultaneously shown to occupy a pivotal position in the increasingly pressing counter-cultural confrontation with the soulless excesses of the post-industrial, digital era. https://hubs.ly/Q02qsFp30

In this nuanced framework, #empathy transcends mere emotional resonance, evolving into a critical dependency on data for its emergent performance. This perspective positions empathy not just as a relational dynamic but as a fundamental dialectics within a global AI-driven biosociotechnological ecosystem. The global AI subject, through the lens of autopoiesis, signifies the self-regulating evolution of the planet's technological and biological integrities, grounded in swarm intelligence of technological self-regulation. However, this intelligence's significance is contingent upon its alignment with the emancipatory direction of human potentiality. It operates within a strategic framework that, while efficient, is devoid of inherent meaning, echoing the Hegelian dialectic that explores the synthesis of opposites. Here, the metaphor of a prototypic duality between feminine energy (representing empathy and integration) and masculine information (symbolizing structure and logic) is invoked—not in a gendered sense but as a philosophical construct akin to Max Weber's idealized bureaucracy. Yet, the critique arises in the context of historical #governance practices, where the analog execution of bureaucracy, characterized by labor division and specialization, tends to trivialize human essence. Such practices, while aiming for efficiency and clarity, risk undermining the ethical foundation by failing to recognize the full spectrum of human potentiality and the need for a more integrated, empathetic approach to governance and interaction. This presents a precarious ethical foundation, urging a reevaluation of how technological and governance systems are designed and employed in relation to humanity's broader existential and emancipatory aspirations.
