To build a future centered on #sustainability, we believe #partnerships are key. They enable everyone to do what they do best. GrizzlyCorps just graduated its fourth cohort of environmental fellows. These young people are #conservation leaders, and they are helping us study nature so we can better support the health of our planet. Pacific Gas and Electric Company and The PG&E Corporation Foundation have invested more than $11.5 million in #climate, #habitat and #speciesconservation and #climateresiliency programs since 2020. Thank you, Makayla Freed for sharing your story and Eliza Munger, Michelle Halbur, Pepperwood and Judy DeFreitas for everything you do.

TELL THE STORY OF YOUR GOOD WORK. THE FATE OF HUMANITY DEPENDS ON IT. Below is a link to a recent article that I wrote for the Waterfront Alliance. It traces the history of the birth of the modern #environmental movement, through #brownfields legislation, to current initiatives, such as the #bipartisaninfrastructurelaw and the #inflationreductionact, which link #remediation with #sustainability, #resilience, #cleanenergy and #environmentaljustice. The article has this message for all practitioners in the environmental space about telling your stories to the layperson: "We have a unique opportunity to engage in integrated thinking and to absorb the lessons of our environmental history—to be thankful for the ingenuity and industriousness of previous generations, while improving on their lack of environmental consciousness. We are coming full circle, from the Greatest to the Greenest Generation. But, as Marvel emphasizes, we need to reach the everyday person if we are going to get to the finish line in time. "The modern environmental movement was launched with poetic intelligence and profound hope by one of the great interdisciplinary minds of the 20th century. Rachel Carson inspired a generation to think like an ecologist—to see the interconnectedness of all life. In the following decades, everyday citizens felt empowered to take stands—big and small—in defense of their families, communities, and the living planet. We—today’s scientists, engineers, policy makers, advocates, and civil servants—are the new boots on the ground. The early adopters—or, in Marvel’s verbiage, the first responders." Announcing the Capital Coalition! The latest initiative from Project Drawdown aims to empower a broad community of funders with the latest climate science, identify critical solutions for reducing emissions, and ultimately inspire more and better investments. “Science shows us where we should focus our efforts and resources to stop the climate crisis,” says Project Drawdown Executive Director Jonathan Foley, PhD. Private capital has a critical role to play in funding climate solutions. While funders spend billions of dollars annually to stop climate change, that capital is often misaligned with the most effective, science-backed climate solutions. The new initiative for #philanthropists, #impactinvestors, and their advisors will leverage Project Drawdown’s scientific expertise to guide capital to the most promising solutions. A big thank you to our founding partners, including Bentley Motors, Toniic, and Wana Brands Foundation. Yesterday was the World Environment Day 🌳and it should be everyday ... This year’s campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” When we think that up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, and that over half the population of the world is affected it is a call for action for both individuals and collectives. We must start thinking about more regenerative models to restore, revive & recreate ecosystems so that businesses, people and the plant may thrive.. How can we use our personal and collective agency to have impact ? What does this mean for the way we lead ? #sustainabletransformation #regenerativeeconomy #purposefulleadership #inclusion #generationrestoration Watch the teaser video about UN Environment Programme here : https://lnkd.in/ebniSypG

I have been searching for a long time for a book that articulates what I believe to be the core challenges of tackling climate change. Much of the literature I come across is relatively narrowly based on some normative analysis (What should happen, given how rational people should think about the world) or some engineering-economic modeling or perspective (showing that mitigating climate change is cheaper than not mitigating once we include the damages we anticipate, or the price we need to put on carbon to either reflect its social cost or to decarbonize over some period of time. I haven't done any book recommendations so far, but Andreas Karelas has written a book (now a few years old but only now reaching my "horizon" that is the first one I have seen that recognizes that these normative or engineering-economic perspectives are not going to result in the progress we need. Instead, beyond from stating clearly that shaming people who disagree with those of us who believe that climate change is an existential threat and needs to be tackled with common sense legislation and incentives won't get us anywhere, he also offers some good ideas and examples of different approaches. They include, importantly, the search for "common ground" such as around themes of conservation (the name has much in common with conservatism), energy independence, national security, finding small scale solutions that limit the power of large corporations and monopolies etc. He also spends a fair amount of time discussing underlying issues related to how we lead a happy life and how the idea that anything we do to mitigate climate change may make our current lives less "happy" are based on potentially false perceptions, many of which likely driven by commercial desires to make us consume more. All of this sounds true to me and worthy of more exploration. Even though sections of the book are a bit too much like "action lists" to me, I think the book is well worth a read and the ideas covered in it could be the foundation for a more productive discussion of how to change the foundations of a discussions around climate change in ways that would allow moving forward much faster and putting the fight against climate change on a much broader basis of support. https://climatecourage.us/

As a country, we have an obligation to educate on and reckon with all our history - the good and the bad. And as folks working in climate, we have an clear need to ensure that absolutely no one is left behind in our fight for a more sustainable 🌍. So on this Juneteenth, we at Elephant Energy are thinking hard about how we can ensure environmental justice in all our efforts here at Elephant. While we have not landed on the perfect solutions yet (ARE there perfect solutions to complex issues?), we are beginning to flesh out plans for how we ensure equity in all we do. Notably, we have applied for a grant to design and pilot an electrification affordability / accessibility program in two LMI communities in the markets we currently serve. While there is much capital being funneled towards this space, we've yet to crack the code on deploying heat pumps, and we're eager to be a part of the solution. Kudos to Josefina Salas and Jillian Di Filippo for leading the charge here, and this is just a start. Check out this piece (https://lnkd.in/eM9aC3XW ) for more insights into the DOE’s commitment to serving the underserved, and we hope you have a meaningful Juneteenth. #DiversityWins

Australia can help the world decarbonise 8-10% globally if we focus on our exports (I.e Greening our Iron) OR we can let our economy get smashed when our biggest markets in Asia dry up as they look elsewhere for green commodities in 10 or so years.
I love learning from the brilliant minds across the Australian climate movement including experts like Tim Buckley, Director of Clean Energy Finance, who shares in this interview the seismic opportunities right at our fingertips here in Australia. The solutions to decarbonise our economy already exist, we now need to "fang it on deployment" (looking at you Anna Skarbek) – rolling out these solutions at scale while ensuring communities nationwide are supported and empowered through the process. Changes of this scale don't just happen through wishing and hoping. They need to be fought for, advocated for, resourced and organised around, and to have justice for people and nature embedded at their core. That’s why Groundswell funds strategic climate advocacy, under the guidance of experts across the movement. When great people come together with shared purpose, what's previously been unimaginable can suddenly become possible. By joining forces through collective giving, we can fund and amplify campaigns that will transform public discourse, shape policy, and push for the large-scale changes our world urgently needs. No matter what your capacity, Groundswell Giving exists to connect people who give a sh*t to people who get sh*t done. If you're interested in getting involved – please do reach out. #ClimateAction #CollectiveImpact #MajorGivingCircle #GroundswellGiving #CleanEnergy #ClimateSolutions

Such an insightful panel discussion!
Climate Week continues to be such a rewarding opportunity to explore pressing topics in resilience and sustainability. On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of joining Arch Street Communications’ Nora Madonick and Karina Vangani at AECOM New York Metro’s and the Regional Plan Association’s symposium Future Proofing New York: Planning for the New Normal. The event was kicked off with a keynote by Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, who oversees New York City’s efforts to modernize its Infrastructure, improve its public realm, and prepare for a changing climate. Three stimulating panel discussions followed, covering a wide range of issues, including important insights into the critical role of public engagement and education and the associated challenges: -It is hard to convey that no action doesn’t mean no change. Change is going to take place even if no steps are taken. -Public engagement is vital, even as new information emerges that can reshape a project. -Balancing meaningful public engagement and the urgency of taking action is crucial -Engaging with trauma-affected communities requires sensitivity, but their feedback is invaluable. #AECOM, #RPA, #ClimateWeek, #resilience, #sustainability, #FutureProofingNY, #NYCHA, #PANYNJ, #BatteryParkCityAuthority

CMG's latest blog post focuses on our most recent sea level rise resilience planning projects. From San Francisco to San Rafael and Oakland/Alameda, each presents unique challenges but a shared goal of ensuring a sustainable future for our communities. I'm eager to continue the important work of finding actionable solutions with residents, collaborators, and partners. Link to our blog post below!
CMG is honored to be working with the communities of San Francisco, Oakland, Alameda, and San Rafael to chart a course for the adaptation of their waterfronts to sea level rise, groundwater, and storm flooding, and importantly, to develop a program of co-benefits that prioritize, public access, open space, and nature-based solutions. As the region and each of these communities starts a multi-generational dialogue to plan for sea level rise, we enter the conversation with humility and respect; building on the indigenous concept of reciprocity to envision and realize waterfronts that are resilient, equitable, accessible, and regenerative. Learn more about these Resilience projects at https://lnkd.in/gcKG42ra A special thank you to our project teams and collaborators: San Francisco Waterfront Resilience Program: Port of San Francisco, Jacobs, SITELAB urban studio, Pathways Climate Institute San Rafael Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan: Waggonner & Ball OAAC ADAPT: Pathways Climate Institute, Moffatt & Nichol, NHA Advisors, LLC, Schaaf & Wheeler, Environmental Science Associates, Earth Mechanics, Inc.
