Two strikes in school and I was almost out. My third failure gave me a wake-up call that finally cracked my stubborn mediocrity. As a student, I was academically poor. I loved playing sports like cricket and running marathons, but the equations of mathematics went over my head. Theories bored me. The result - I almost failed twice in my 6th and 7th standard. The story repeated in my 8th standard, but my headmaster has had enough. He told my father that either I repeat the year or leave the school. My father thought it wouldn't be wise to repeat, so he sent me to boarding school. It turned my life around 360 degrees. Being away from my parents made me realize that I needed to get serious about life. Three things I owe to my boarding school: [1] Self-discipline - Life there was disciplined from waking hours to meals. I had to get up at 6 am every day. Food was limited and something I wasn't used to before. It helped me to become more organized and responsible. [2] Competitiveness - I found students at my level or a step ahead. It gave me the drive to push my limits and compete with them. [3] Self-confidence - I moved from a CBSE school to an SSC board where the syllabus was less difficult. I went from being a below average-student to a rank holder. This transformation to success instilled confidence in me. The boarding school experience got me back on track academically and personally. The self-confidence, work ethic and never-say-die spirit I gained there have helped me immensely ever since. Although tough, I am grateful for that turning point in my student life. P.S.- Can you spot me in this pic? #entrepreneurspirit #entrepreneurlife

LESSON FROM MY UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY: THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE AHEAD OR BEHIND YOU. I landed in Moi University in style. But no sooner had I settled prepared to 'show my classmates what I am made of' than I realized that the level was different. Doing a class roll call or reading through the newspaper list of top KCSE performers during our year was the same. ✅Soon it was CAT time and I went all in, very sure that I would do well. I was cut down to size when the results came. The same happened to so many others. One of my classmates captured it so well: 'I am not used to being harassed by an exam'. The good thing was that with every series of exams, tables would turn, those who led a few months would now be kicking themselves and wondering how they were now performing at average. Eventually, everything settled down to meeting the 50% cut off mark than the glorified distinctions. ✅Work study and scholarship program. There existed in Moi University ( I think it still does), a platform to support poor students. The most prestigious of these was a scholarship that carried a couple of academic and financial goodies. The second tire was the work study program where you could be attached to a faculty or office to do two or so hours (off academic time) of assistance in return for some money. Again, I considered myself the most needy. I mean, my high school story was enough testament. I was awakened when I didn't make it to the scholarship list. I was angry and in denial, even thought the assessment was biased. But eventually I came to accept it. Once I accepted it, my eyes were now open! Where I argued that I had poor parents, I realized there were classmates who were orphans; where I felt I came from a poor marginalized village, I realized there were classmates who were political refugees, or those whose only known home was a childrens rehabiliation facility in an informal settlement. It was a sobering awakening. There was always someone better than me. The reverse was true, too. 🔥It remains the same today, be it career success, financial progress or family cohesion. It is an ever migrating mirage. Someone is always doing better. Someone is always ahead. But if you pause and look back, there is always someone who yearns to reach where you have reached. Comparison is the thief of joy, so they say. Run your race.

A KIND MESSAGE TO PARENTS REGARDING THEIR CHILD'S GCSE RESULTS Many accomplished individuals, like Sir Richard Branson, Lord Alan Sugar, and Simon Cowell, didn't follow a conventional path of excelling in GCSEs. Their stories stand as a testament that success isn't limited by exam scores. Our children possess multifaceted talents, unique qualities, and potential that transcend exam performance. Attributes like adaptability, creativity, and resilience contribute immensely to their growth. As parents, educators, and mentors, let's emphasise a holistic view of education - one that values diverse skills, nurtures passions, and fosters lifelong learning. Facing challenges, navigating setbacks, and persevering through life's uncertainties all contribute to shaping a child's character. These experiences are equally valuable on the journey to success. The world offers an array of paths to success - some uncharted, some unconventional. Exam results are just a starting point on the journey toward realising potential. So, as our young learners step into this new phase, let's remind them that exams are part of the story, but not the whole narrative. Let's celebrate their uniqueness, encourage their exploration, and support their growth into well-rounded individuals. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.
