🌟 Celebrating GCSE Results: A Journey Beyond Grades 🌟 Today marks a significant milestone for students across the UK as they receive their GCSE results. Whether you’ve passed with flying colors or faced challenges, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work, perseverance, and courage it takes to navigate this journey. Remember: GCSEs are not the all-deciding factor of your future, despite what teachers say! Now-a-days, so many modern and leading companies simply do not care. Traditional qualifications are simply a piece of paper saying "you can do this... in a very controlled, very normalised setting" That doesn't go to discredit all qualifications. You gain valuable knowledge and transferrable skills from them; the point is: it's not the only way! Find something you're interested in and work on it. Learn about it. Become skilled. I know firsthand how daunting the education system can be. I dropped out of secondary school in Year 7, of course, without a single GCSE to my name. It felt like the end of the road, but it turned out to be just the beginning of my journey. I enrolled in a Level 2 course at college once I turned 16, where I decided to work on things my way. Not the traditional way - college gave me way more freedom to be who I am. Fast forward, and I'm now thriving in a Level 3 course! This experience has taught me that the traditional academic route—school, college, and the conventional path—is not for everyone. Success comes in many forms, and each individual's journey is unique. It’s essential for people to find their own way, whether that means pursuing vocational training, entrepreneurship, or self-directed learning. To those who passed their GCSEs, congratulations! You’ve achieved a milestone that will serve as a stepping stone to your future endeavors. And to those who didn’t get the results they wanted, remember: this is not the end. Your journey is uniquely yours, and there are countless paths to success beyond traditional metrics. With GCSE results in the morning, I dream of a time where all students will be recognised for their achievements and not only the grade 8 or 9 students, who seem to get all the ‘air time’ in the press and social media postings. Working in Special Educational Needs, I wholeheartedly understand just how challenging exams can be for some children. For many, achieving a grade 5 is a monumental accomplishment - a testament to their hard work, perseverance and determination. It is so important to remember that not all students are destined to be Grade 8 or 9 achievers, and that’s okay. Every student has their own unique strength and obstacles to overcome. Just because a child’s achievement doesn’t fit the traditional mode of ‘excellence’ that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be recognised and celebrated. Let’s broaden the definition of success and celebrate every students journey, not just the destination. After all, for some, the greatest victory isn’t in the top grades - it’s the progress they make and the challenges they conquer along the way.

Marks - A Sign of Excellence or Resilience? As the scores roll in, it's natural to experience a myriad of emotions. But amidst the anticipation and perhaps a bit of anxiety, let's pause and reflect. Scores, while significant, often overshadow the true essence of education. I recall scoring a commendable 96/100 in my Class 10th Board Exams. At first glance, it seems like a noteworthy achievement. Yet, upon deeper reflection, what did it truly reflect? - Understanding of the subject matter? Not quite. - Genuine interest and passion? Unfortunately, no. It boiled down to sheer grind, unwavering hard work, and relentless dedication. Here's the truth: marks don't necessarily define proficiency. Instead, they serve as a testament to one's discipline, rigour, and perseverance. They lay the groundwork for life, imparting invaluable lessons in resilience. As parents, educators, and mentors, it's time to shift our focus from mere scores to cultivating traits like hard work and perseverance. LESSON FROM MY UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY: THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE AHEAD OR BEHIND YOU. I landed in Moi University in style. But no sooner had I settled prepared to 'show my classmates what I am made of' than I realized that the level was different. Doing a class roll call or reading through the newspaper list of top KCSE performers during our year was the same. ✅Soon it was CAT time and I went all in, very sure that I would do well. I was cut down to size when the results came. The same happened to so many others. One of my classmates captured it so well: 'I am not used to being harassed by an exam'. The good thing was that with every series of exams, tables would turn, those who led a few months would now be kicking themselves and wondering how they were now performing at average. Eventually, everything settled down to meeting the 50% cut off mark than the glorified distinctions. ✅Work study and scholarship program. There existed in Moi University ( I think it still does), a platform to support poor students. The most prestigious of these was a scholarship that carried a couple of academic and financial goodies. The second tire was the work study program where you could be attached to a faculty or office to do two or so hours (off academic time) of assistance in return for some money. Again, I considered myself the most needy. I mean, my high school story was enough testament. I was awakened when I didn't make it to the scholarship list. I was angry and in denial, even thought the assessment was biased. But eventually I came to accept it. Once I accepted it, my eyes were now open! Where I argued that I had poor parents, I realized there were classmates who were orphans; where I felt I came from a poor marginalized village, I realized there were classmates who were political refugees, or those whose only known home was a childrens rehabiliation facility in an informal settlement. It was a sobering awakening. There was always someone better than me. The reverse was true, too. 🔥It remains the same today, be it career success, financial progress or family cohesion. It is an ever migrating mirage. Someone is always doing better. Someone is always ahead. But if you pause and look back, there is always someone who yearns to reach where you have reached. Comparison is the thief of joy, so they say. Run your race.

Finally traded my student ID for an alumni card! Note to self: being an adult is just a concept until student discounts disappear. 😂 College has been a whirlwind of experiences- from submitting 11:59pm due assignments rightly at 11:50pm, understanding that your ADHD-related last minute submissions stresses out your team-mates, juggling part-time jobs and studies fuelled by caffeine, and still finding time to make lifelong friends. There were moments of pure joy, laughter, and pride, mixed with times of stress, exhaustion, and doubt. Every project, every paper, every exam was a step on a path paved with hard work and perseverance. I’ve learned that success isn’t a straight line; it’s a series of cloud nines and rock bottoms, over and over again. As I step into the next chapter of my life, I carry with me the lessons learned, the friendships made, and the resilience built. And none of this would have been possible without the constant support of my professors, passionate enough to inspire me to do better each day, the unwavering encouragement from my parents, managers who just didn't lead but became life-long mentors, and the grace of God. As Nelson Mandela said, “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.", my journey so far has shaped me, preparing me for whatever comes next.
