Did you know REEF surveyors collect data on sea turtles? 🐢 While the main focus of the Volunteer Fish Survey Project is marine fish (and in temperate locations, select invertebrates and algae species), you can also record your sea turtle sightings while snorkeling or diving! Simply mark your sightings the same way that you do for fish. Dytiscidae are commonly known as predaceous diving #beetles, with their #larvae knick-named water tigers due to their insatiable appetite. These #aquatic insects are found in #freshwater habitats worldwide. With elongated bodies and specialised adaptations for life underwater, they prey on small, aquatic organisms including #insect larvae and tadpoles. In my spare time I try to volunteer as much as possible for Reef Alert Network, as small grass-root organisation based on the Ligurian Coast of Italy. One of the missions of the organisation is monitoring the state of affairs in the Marine Protected Area of Portofino. Unfortunately, both professional and sport fishing are allowed in this protected area, which causes severe damage to the underwater biotope as lost fishing nets and lines are left once lost. Reef Alert Network is run in cooperation with various scientists of various universities and and scientific organisations, by local and international volunteers. Two weeks ago we spent a long weekend again making an overview of lost fishing gear and we were "shocked" by the amount of impacted organisms and lost / abandoned fishing gear. We surveyed a distance of about 350m divided over 4 sites at an average depth of 39m. For those who dive know that this is already quite deep and outside the scope of recreational diving. A lot of training and gear, and not to mentioned gasses (We use helium in our diving) are needed. The marine protected area is about 7km long, so we can't start to imagine the amount of discarded fishing gear is still out there . New cleanup campaigns are in the planning but as it continues like this, we remove lines at one spot only to find the next again covered in lines. That's why we are trying to establish a baseline and scientific overview of damages to continue the discussions with the relevant authorities in order to show and prove that this is a serious problem, which causes damage to an eco system already under duress. The famous diving tower at Blackrock in Salthill, Galway City at low tide. Sitting along the periphery of Galway Bay, an important area for wildlife, it has also become a somewhat important area for humans regarding socialising. Wildlife - It's a protected site under both the EU Habitats and Birds Directives. Various things are important here, such as mammals - like the Otter (Lutra lutra) and Harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and a whole lot of waterbirds - like Dunlin (Calidris alpina), Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator), Light-bellied Brent Goose (Branta bernicla hrota), Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria), and Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). Humans - The tower has become synonyms with "the craic" here. It's so entwined with the city that I'd argue it's either a "must see" or "must do". At the very least, it's nice to sit with a coffee and watch others throw themselves off it. However, folks have been stupid by jumping off it in extreme weather warnings.
