Out almost 4 years ago, Architectural Guide (Architektur Führer): Alexandria, by Verlag DOM, was fruit to work between an interdisciplinary team of Egyptian and German backgrounds that beautifully brings narrative and intangiblity of heritage to the forefront. I am proud to have co-authored the texts of more than 150 buildings in this book edited by dear professors Zeyad el Sayad and Dina Taha. https://lnkd.in/d2b3Crz6

When architects visit a place or a building, we strive to grasp its "parti"—the essence, the soul, the spark of the conceptual idea, the inner fire of the design. Recently, I shared some images of the Bat Trang Pottery Museum, designed by Vietnamese architect Hoang Thuc Hao. Here is my interpretation of the building's parti, and this is the link to the architect's project page: https://lnkd.in/gsE88Yef

📅 Join us for the last in this semester’s Architectural History & Theory Seminars: Richard Wittman - Roman Architecture 1800-1850: An Alternative Modernity 💬 Admirers and critics alike of Catholic theocracy have long conspired in perpetuating an image of early nineteenth-century Rome as a stubborn bulwark against all things modern. Rome figures in histories of nineteenth-century architecture, if at all, mainly as an inert backdrop for the Romantic reveries of northern visitors. A more critical examination, however, indicates that this picture is profoundly wrong, and that Roman architects were every bit as stimulated as their northern counterparts (if in slightly different ways) by the new anxieties and insights about history that were transforming contemporary architectural thought elsewhere. 📍 Tue 2 Apr 5.15pm Elliot Seminar Room, Minto House, 20-22 Chambers St/online. Chicago is world famous as the 'birthplace' of the skyscraper, one of the first forms of modern architecture. Did you know it is also the city where the American economist Thorstein Veblen wrote his classic text, The Theory of the Leisure Class? Published in 1899, this book takes aim at what would later be known as 'consumer culture.' In my new book, fresh off the press and available April 2nd, I examine Veblen's book (and his famous concept of 'conspicuous consumption), in the context of Chicago. How did this then-unique urban landscape inform his canonical text? https://lnkd.in/gX7wYvSA

Fabiano Micocci, Urbanistic Projects in the Absence of Planning. – Konstantinos Pantazis, Marianna Rentzou, Point Supreme Architects. Athens. – Konstantinos Pantazis (Point Supreme) and Fabiano Micocci (Department of Architecture University of Thessaly), Dialogue. It is a great honor participating in the initiative by Carlo Pisano (UniFi) and Giambattista Zaccariotto (AHO) of their investigation of the state of the Urbanistic Projects. New Generational Paths in Europe (https://lnkd.in/d457AbP4). It was very challenging to include Greece in this panorama, and to locate Greek urbanistic practices into a European framework. I am also enthusiastic of sharing my participation in this initiative with Point Supreme, and to have our interventions and our dialogue with the editors included in the publication. From the webpage of the publisher Quodlibet: «Therefore urbanism, in each EU territory and as a whole field, emerged not as a matter of the succession or replacement of one concept by another, but rather as a matter of accumulation of variety». The book is an investigation of the multilayered field of urbanism practices in the European context. A series of seminars implemented a dialogue between a Scholar and a Practitioner from seven Europan territories (Spain, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Greece, Germany). It starts from an anthology of seminal texts on planning by classics (from Vittorio Gregotti to Rem Koolhaas) presented as a shared approach to urbanism as a reflective practice whose subject matter is the critical reinterpretation of the form of the world we live in. Then the discussions scanned forms of thinking and ways of designing, ideas and concepts, tools and alliances that respond to changing urban questions in the European context. The book aims to contribute to the current public debate on the links between concrete spaces, society, economy, ecology, and politics, detecting elements of continuity and novelty. #urbanism #europe #greece #athens #publications #quodlibet

Great legacies endure through remembrance: On this day in 1969, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe passed away in Chicago, Illinois. Over five decades later, we continue to admire his work and promote the knowledge of his legacy. ✨ In this sense, in addition to preserving and disseminating knowledge about the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, through a variety of cultural and academic activities, promotes the study of the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich and the Modern Movement, as well as debate and awareness of issues related to contemporary architecture and urbanism. Among their key initiatives is the organisation, jointly with the European Commission, of the EUmies Awards, one of the most prestigious of all European architecture prizes. His work still captivating us today, serving as a constant and enduring source of learning for generations. 🎥 Fragments from the trailer of the documentary film ‘The Mies van der Rohes’ by Sabine Gisiger presented during the first #PantallaPavelló2024. Italian architect, historian, and restorer Gustavo Giovannoni was a key figure in the fields of architecture, #urbanism, and #conservation during the first half of the 20th century. His writings represent a significant step toward the full appreciation of the historic city, and his insights are directly relevant today to the protection of historic resources in urban contexts worldwide. Recently published, “New Building in Old Cities”, edited by Edited by Steven Semes, Francesco Siravo, and Jeff Cody is an abundantly illustrated critical anthology featuring many of Giovannoni's seminal texts related to the appreciation, understanding, and planning of historic cities. The readings are grouped thematically around key concepts in Giovannoni’s conservation theory—urban building, respect for the setting or context, a thinning out of the urban fabric, conservation and restoration treatments, the grafting of the new upon the old, and reconstruction. Professor, Researcher, Scholar, and Author | 30+ years in architectural design, communication, and theory. Expert in architecture, phenomenology, spirituality, and neuroscience.
The spiritual dimension of architecture opens a world where design transcends physical form, creating spaces that resonate deeply with our being. History shows us the incredible architectural feats inspired by spiritual beliefs, from ancient temples to modern sanctuaries. These structures are more than just buildings; they are manifestations of our collective human spirit. The Walton Program at the CUA School of Architecture emphasizes the importance of integrating spirituality into architectural education and practice. This approach not only enriches the architectural landscape but also imbues our built environment with profound meaning and connection.
