The health select committee's review into the aged care sectors current and future capacity to support people with neurological cognitive disorders is coming up (link in the comments). So we thought we'd share one of favourite resources to help people understand the ecosystem that supports older people in Aotearoa, our Aged Care Continuum. We also have a range of thoughtful resources on our website to help people understand this complex, but crucial sector. https://lnkd.in/gHbmDKqk

We devote intensive education to screening, brief interventions and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for primary care providers, pastoral counselors, human resource professionals, Employee Assistance Professionals, and others who observe early symptoms. We also protect the on-going relationship with a referring physician and practice. The Aquila Model establishes a respect for and knowledge of brain disease – particularly substance use disorder – at all stages of risk and dependence. Individual wellness plans are informed by medical examinations, counselor observations and client reporting. Each plan is a product of, and owned by, the individual in care. #AddictionRecovery #AquilaRecoveryofVA #OurMission

Palliative care and spiritual and emotional care are vital in aged care for older people, friends, family and caregivers. Palliative care is a unique environment, and the importance of this week is to highlight the people at the heart of quality palliative care. Camilla Rowland, Chief Executive Officer, Palliative Care Australia (PCA) says, "National Palliative Care Week is an opportunity to open minds and hearts to the profound human spirit that drives palliative care and unlock the knowledge that comes when people and families are challenged by a life-limiting diagnosis that talks about death and dying," https://lnkd.in/dF7f4AJN

CEO and Founder of Heart of the Nation, Co-Chair of AuSCAA,Original Yellow Wiggle - views expressed here are my own and do not necessarily represent those of any other organisations that I am associated with.
This is an extremely important topic to discuss - and something we must get abreast of. Pardon the pun. As a society, we must begin education that normalises body parts when it comes to basic life support. Nipples, breasts, chests - it’s all just flesh and skin. When someone’s heart suddenly stops beating, it takes hands on chest (in between the breasts to save a life), together with placing the pads of an AED above the right breast or chest, and slightly below and to the left of the left chest or breast. NOTE - CPR can be performed through clothes, there is no need to remove clothing for CPR. But, placement of hands CAN be very concerning for some responders - particularly males responding to female cardiac arrests on patients who are not known to them. We must encourage responders to ignore the breasts and focus on getting hands on “chest”. It is interesting to note that the study referred to in the article found that in parts of Asia, CPR performed by bystanders were relatively equal between male and female patients. In Asia, in fact, the rate for bystander CPR on female patients was in some cases higher. But it is when it comes placing the pads of an AED on the patients chest that there still appears to be some kind of variation. In cardiac arrest situations, privacy and modesty are secondary to quick action to save a life. Once a responder or group of responders are able to, modesty and privacy should be addressed, but the primary concern should be performing basic life support, and access to a bare chest for placement of the pads of an AED. Cutting through the shirt/dress and bra of a female in cardiac arrest is essential to place the pads. However, once the pads are in place, the fabric of the shirt/dress can be loosely re-placed over the top of the pads and breasts to preserve some sort of privacy. Disclaimer - the journal article referenced is one that I was a co-author on, alongside a great group of authors who are dedicated to raising awareness about appropriate response to cardiac arrest.

Introducing the Specialized Care Team for the Rehabilitation Service of Complex Trauma Patients from 🇫🇷 The impact of traumatic injuries and worsening chronic conditions during sudden onset disasters can overwhelm the healthcare and rehabilitation systems of affected countries. Moreover, rehabilitation services are often inadequate in low- and middle-income areas, leading to a significant unmet demand in times of crisis. The Specialized Care Team for the Rehabilitation Service of Complex Trauma Patients from @Ministère de l'Intérieur is designed to enhance as part of rescEU EMT the capacity of existing rehabilitation centres and support their efforts. This unit can operate independently to assist overwhelmed local care centers in disaster-stricken areas. It is adaptable for deployment to local health facilities and rehabilitation centers, as well as field settings, following the principles of self- sufficiency. #rehabilitation #complextrauma #rescEU #EMT #EUCivPro #unitedinaction
