Les Forts de Latour takes its name from an historic plot in the « Enclos ». The wine was first labelled with this name in 1966 and constant work on developing its quality has resulted in its achieving the level of a Médoc Grand Cru Classé. The origin of this wine is threefold: • The edge of the Enclos. • Some plots that could be used in the Grand Vin may finally be included in the Forts de Latour blend, depending on how their quality is judged during the blending tastings. • Plots located outside the Enclos, in Cru Classé areas of Pauillac: These consist on the one hand, of plots such as Piñada, Petit Batailley and St. Anne, which have belonged to the estate for more than a century and whose vines benefit from a high average age (around 40 years), synonymous with quality. And on the other hand, of a seven hectare island of vines in the commune of Artigues on gravel terraces, which was acquired in 2005. Plus a handful of plots (about 5 hectares) acquired in 2012. These various blocks of plots present very different terroirs, thereby offering Forts de Latour more varied characteristics and flavour profiles depending on the vintage. Les Forts de Latour is produced with the same meticulous care as the Grand Vin, both in the vineyard and in the winery. The only notable difference, apart from the origin of the grapes, is the proportion of new barrels (50 to 60%) used in the maturing stage. The blend for Forts de Latour can vary from one year to the next but there is always a higher proportion of Merlot (25 to 30%) compared to the Grand Vin.

It's not every day that ancient Greek literature and investment wine symbiotically unite. But that's the case with the 2019 Hundred Acre Ark Vineyard, which, in addition to receiving 99 points, is also produced in very small quantities. The flamboyant Jayson Woodbridge, who created Hundred Acre with a desire to create masterful Cabernet Sauvignon: And he did, as his wines are reaping sky-high scores vintage after vintage. And according to Liv-ex, the last 10 vintages Hundred Acre Ark Vineyard that have been on the market for at least five years have returned an average of 59.8%, which equates to an average annual return of 10%. Back to the ancient Greek: Woodbridge has created a significant label with five golden stars on top a white label inscribed the text from the opening paragraph of Homer's Odyssey. Why, we don't know. Dom Perignon P2 2000 Dom Pérignon was the 17th century Benedictine monk who has gone down in history as the person who "invented" Champagne. His name was originally registered by Eugène Mercier. He sold the brand name to Moët & Chandon, which used it as the name for its prestige cuvée, which was first released in 1937. A rigorous selection process in both the vineyard and winery ensures that only the best grapes go into Dom Pérignon champagne. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are used in roughly equal proportions without one variety dominating the other. There are three plenitudes in the life of a given vintage: the first plenitude spans between seven to eight years after the vintage, which is when Dom Pérignon Vintage is released, while the second one arrives between 12 and 15 years – which was previously the first oenothèque release, but from now will be branded as P2. The third window comes after around 30 years, when the Champagne has spent more than 20 years on its lees, which will now be termed as P3.

Bound in contemporary polished calf leather with marbled endpapers, a gilt-lettered morocco spine label with a royal monogram in the top spine panel, but the front board is missing. An important and comprehensive early work on the history of wine, illustrated with woodcut vignettes and charts. Chapters on many aspects of wine including ancient wine cellars, wines of various countries, dietetic and medical qualities of wine, and much more. With 10 appendices and an index. Foxing to endpapers but text is quite clean with wide margins. Spine leather is dry affecting the royal monogram, which we have been unable to identify, but the spine label is in very nice condition. Cirò Tenuta Iuzzolini 2021: The colour is medium ruby. On the nose tea and sour cherries. In the mouth light but smooth. The aftertaste is short. This wine is made mainly with Gaglioppo grapes, under the denomination Cirò DOC of Calabria. The origins of Gaglioppo are unclear. The traditional theory is that the variety arrived with Aglianico at the time of the ancient Greeks occupation of southern Italy (Magna Grecia). However, recent DNA testing suggests that it is more likely to be one of the many descendents of Sangiovese. A third theory is that both are true and that Gaglioppo is the result of a cross-pollination between Sangiovese and an unknown variety from Greece. Gaglioppo grapes must constitute at least 80% of the blend of a red Cirò DOC wine. The remaining 20% can be any other authorized red grape. Of this, only 10% may be Barbera, Sangiovese, Cabernets Franc or Sauvignon, and/or Merlot. Previously small amounts of white varieties such as Greco Bianco and Trebbiano Toscano were also allowed. For this bottle I paid 5 EUR at the winery, when I visited Calabria during my Eastern Holidays.
