⛏️ You have to dig deep to get stories and insights from your spokespeople that are worth sharing with the press. It’s tempting to pick around a little bit, find some promising nuggets on the surface, and start pitching them. But journalists don’t like surface-level stories. The really good stuff is much deeper. Don’t give up too early. When you find something promising, take the time to go deeper and get more specific on the details. That’s where the gold is.

I’ve been working in PR for more than eight years, and it’s now more difficult than ever to get a journalist’s attention and to gain coverage for a client. Whereas you used to be able to give a reporter a quick call to talk through a story pitch, now you’re lucky if you can even find a phone number to call. Journalism has had to change to adapt to the influence of social media, and that means story pitches that were once guaranteed to be of interest are no longer certain to be picked up. It also means we as PR practitioners have to work harder and smarter. We’ve compiled some of our top tips for pitching to journalists in our new blog. If you want to get your story covered by the media, get in touch to see how me and my colleagues at Petersens PR can help you.

20+ years ago, I was faxing the same press release to dozens of newsrooms, hoping it got to the right reporter. Today, I’ve got a text from my sister with a new baby pic, a text from my daughter asking to pick her up - and in between a text from a reporter asking for help with a story. We aren’t working with fax response times anymore. Reporters are moving text message fast and if you want to be a go-to source, you need to respond accordingly. 📠 ->📱 #mediarelations #publicrelations #notyourparentspr
