A fantastic piece by Tom Tivnan in The Bookseller today on the incredible success of Long Island by Colm Tóibín (Picador) in Ireland. "Tóibín’s Long Island—a return to both the characters of his all-time bestseller, Brooklyn, and to Picador after publishing eight novels with Viking—easily claimed the overall Ireland number one thus far in 2024, shifting just over 34,000 copies, 12,000 more than the next bestseller. "In fact, Long Island’s ICM performance outstripped its UK volume sales (31,000). One out of every 150 people in Ireland have bought a copy of Long Island this year; that same ratio in Britain would generate sales of 446,000 units." Bríd Enright, Pan Macmillan Sales Director, commented: "Colm has continued to do events and publicity all around the country since publication and Cormac Kinsella has more lined up this Autumn. We have had continued support from major retailers like Eason, Dubray, Bookstation, and WH Smith Travel Ireland, alongside independent bookshops. Long Island has been the book of the summer (and of the year so far!) and is definitely the must-read book in Ireland. "It looks set to carry on right up to Christmas and beyond." #icm #irishconsumermarket #bestsellers #Picador #LongIsland #ColmTóibín #irishbookmarket https://lnkd.in/ePzD7_EQ

Price of Postage - Part 3 There are commercial stamps and yellow envelopes that cost €6 to post up to 1-10kg in Ireland but neither of these solutions are practical: ❌ The commercial stamps require an initial upfront cost of €149 ❌ The yellow envelope is bulky and does not adequately fit a book or letterbox ❌ Most authors would like to have their own branding on envelopes ❌ €6 is too expensive to post one book in Ireland The self-published market in Ireland is growing in popularity, and selling direct has the most benefit to the author. An Post has an opportunity to support Irish authors directly as they currently do for bookstores and introduce €3 pricing for all books posted under 1kg. This initiative would bring more customers to An Post and also give more readers the opportunity to access Irish Titles. We look forward to bringing this proposal directly to An Post 📗 #anpost #anpostpricing #authorsoflinkedin #authors #fairpricing

Interesting research paper on book procurement with case studies from Ireland, Germany (yes, Hanover is briefly mentioned) and Finland. The paper focuses on legislation and on the challenges experienced by local bookstores who want to take part in the process of supplying libraries with books. Based on the case studies, it provides a set of steps to ensure more inclusive procurement processes.
Last week, we presented RISE Bookselling's latest #IndustryInsights research paper on book procurement at the Irish Book Trade Conference. We all know and love bookshops for the most obvious service they provide to us - being a faithful supplier of books to bookworms and booklovers globally. But perhaps what not many people may know is that a fundamental source of economic stability for a bookshop lies in its relationship with schools and libraries, particularly in its supply stream to to these entities. In the report, we delve into the complex topic of book procurement by taking a look at how the process works in three European countries that serve as case studies: Ireland 🇮🇪 , Germany 🇩🇪 and Finland 🇫🇮 . In doing so, we look into the European and respective national legislation on procurement, assess the conditions for participation across all three countries, provide an analysis on the challenges experienced and highlight necessary steps to improve the current state of play and ensure a more inclusive process for all bookshops. Many thanks to Philip Appleton for the help in designing this paper.

(Sadly?) redundant books. I was in a lovely boutique hotel in Woodford last week and a book caught my eye – a World Almanac from 1980. I had a leaf through it, thinking wistfully about all the books which are now largely not used any more after being replaced with a listing on the behemoth that is Google. Almanacs. Encyclopaedias. Dictionaries. Thesauruses (Thesauri?). Atlases. Phone books. Even photo albums. All on Google now. Newspapers and magazines are quickly going that way too. Do you miss the paper versions? Do you miss the smell of those books? Do you not miss it? I think I like them now that I only see them once in a while, but I appreciate having the extra space. I’m all for decluttering. However; I entertain a little worry, once in a while, that if the internet were to go down and we were plunged into a second dark age… what would we do? All those books would suddenly become very valuable again.
