A fantastic piece by Tom Tivnan in The Bookseller today on the incredible success of Long Island by Colm Tóibín (Picador) in Ireland. "Tóibín’s Long Island—a  return to both the characters  of his all-time bestseller, Brooklyn, and to Picador after publishing eight novels with Viking—easily claimed the  overall Ireland number one thus far in 2024, shifting just over 34,000 copies, 12,000 more than the next bestseller. "In fact, Long Island’s ICM performance outstripped its UK volume sales (31,000). One out of every 150 people in Ireland have bought a copy of Long Island this year; that same ratio in Britain would generate sales of 446,000 units." Bríd Enright, Pan Macmillan Sales Director, commented: "Colm has continued to do events and publicity all around the country since publication and Cormac Kinsella has more lined up this Autumn. We have had continued support from major retailers like Eason, Dubray, Bookstation, and WH Smith Travel Ireland, alongside independent bookshops. Long Island has been the book of the summer (and of the year so far!) and is definitely the must-read book in Ireland. "It looks set to carry on right up to Christmas and beyond." #icm #irishconsumermarket #bestsellers #Picador #LongIsland #ColmTóibín #irishbookmarket https://lnkd.in/ePzD7_EQ

72% of employers are concerned about the level of soft skills - such as communication and presentation - among school, college and university leavers. That's one of many reasons we're proud to support The National Literacy Trust's latest report 'Building confident communicators: How the government can help every child find their voice.' The report includes 10 policy proposals - from early years to employement - to support every child, irrespective of their background, to find, develop and express their authentic voice and develop the oracy skills they need to thrive. Addressing oracy education is critical to tackling social immobility, as poor oracy skills are disproportionately concentrated among young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds By working together, we can empower every child with the oracy skills they need to thrive. In support of the report Briony Grogan commented: "The strength of a candidate’s oral communication plays a pivotal role both in their success in securing that first job, but also in advocating for themselves and progressing their career at a later stage. Publishing is a business built on the strength of its relationships and so oracy skills will always be valued highly. We are proud supporters of the National Literacy Trust and it’s fantastic to see their Early Words Matter campaign bring attention to the link between language and literacy." It is with great sadness that we share the news that bestselling author Elaine Everest died, aged 70, on Friday 16th August. Everest hailed from North West Kent and grew up listening to stories of the war years in her hometown of Erith, which features in her Sunday Times bestselling Woolworths Girls series. The Woolworths Girls was published by Pan Macmillan in 2016 and since then, Everest has written a further fifteen historical saga novels set around World War II. Lucy Hale said: 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Elaine Everest, whose heartwarming tales of love, resilience and community spirit have captured the hearts of hundreds of thousands of readers. Not only was Elaine a supremely talented storyteller; she was also an incredibly hard-working author who loved connecting with her readers, and who we all loved working with.  "We at Pan Macmillan are honoured to have published wonderful 14 novels from Elaine and we were all looking forward to celebrating the publication of A Christmas Wish at Woolworths together this year. We are thinking of her husband Michael and all those closest to her at this difficult time.' https://lnkd.in/gcCs6-sb
