Here it is! My first published research paper, "From Doll to Screen: Investigating PR and Marketing Techniques in the Barbie Movie's Global Success" has a home in M/C Journal's Barbie issue. I'm greatly appreciative to the editors and reviewers who supported me in the process. This is an interesting essay by Michal Chmiel and Raluca Moise that explores the role of a university education within public relations practice. It argues that public relations is a mature and established discipline that suffers from a legitimacy crisis. In this context, two key trends shape undergraduate education in public relations in the UK: 1) convergence with other communication disciplines reflected in degree names and curricula 2) an over-reliance on teaching tactical skills rather than strategy, ethics, and social impact Ultimately, there's a disconnect between university teaching focused on public relations as a social science and its contribution to society versus the need to build skills that can be directly applied in industry. Both approaches are required within a profession. In other disciplines, such as finance and law, there's a recognised need for conversation between university and industry.

I absolutely loved writing this paper with Michal Chmiel. We looked into how the academic #PREducation in the UK is a field of knowledge influenced by other social fields (e.g. public discourses, the industry and the scholarship), and then focused on two key trends which currently shape the undergraduate PR education in the UK, to recommend changes to the process of curriculum development that (we think) could reconstruct the social value of Public Relations. Our paper is quite different from similar articles tackling #PREducation: 1/ it is not just interrogative, but also provides potential solutions. 2/ it combines different research perspectives and methodologies; 3/ it discusses the fragmentation and polarisation of 'what do we know about PR?', to then analyse how these very different understandings impact the academic design & the teaching of PR. We are preparing some interesting conversational spaces in which such topics can be expanded to foster further analysis and research. Watch this space for further information, details coming soon!

I spent most of my first career as a community print journalist with Black Press - writing, photography and ultimately editing papers in Nakusp, 100 Mile House, Coquitlam, and South Delta before making a move to PR. To this day I'm grateful to the generous and talented professionals I was fortunate enough to work with - without their guidance and example in my early career I'm not sure I'd have developed the skills that remain the foundation of my work. As advertising revenue has fallen Black Press and other community media have become less local than they were in my time. Newsrooms have been consolidated under regional editors and some smaller communities have lost their local reporter/editor. Yet the outlets continue to play a crucial role in our communities - reporting locally important news that doesn't garner coverage from larger outlets, regularly breaking big stories, and reflecting their communities through telling stories of its people, places, and challenges. They are worth supporting with our ad budgets and readership. I imagine many former Black Press'ers will be watching the company's creditor protection and re-structuring under new ownership, announced yesterday. I wonder whether it will mean some outlets being shuttered or dropping print editions in favour of moving entirely online, and further newsroom consolidation. The potentially good news is that one of the three incoming owners, Carpenter Newsmedia, is by all accounts successfully operating newspapers in the southern US. Perhaps they are coming to the table with new models and expertise that will keep these important media going strong in the face of significant challenges. https://lnkd.in/gPYHCgsq

ℹ PR has many meanings..... Pesonal Record (in running etc) Rectal examination (in medical terms) Proportional Representation (in democratic elections) - and I'm sure many, many more! In the context of marketing, PR, or Public Relations, is multi-facted, with skills honed with time and experience - but what it absolutely isn't is....... Press Release! I love PR becasue it is so varied, there are so many ways to communicate and interact. Yes, press releases have their place but PR is so much more than a mass-mailing of information.... good PR calls for creativity, resourcefulness, intelligence, attention to detail, research, story telling, relation building, taking time to delve, fact finding....
