Finally. A promising LGBTQIA news story in the political cycle.
Historic news out of Mexico as Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as the country's first woman (and first Jewish) president in a landslide win. The former mayor of Mexico City ran on a campaign of promising to accelerate the transition to renewable energies, combat gender-based violence and improving the rights for all LGBTQ+ people in Mexico. It's worth nothing that same-sex marriage has been legal in all of Mexico's 32 states in 2022, but the country's Catholic majority, has led to several anti-LGBTQ Catholic groups opposing new laws that strive for full equality for Mexico's LGBTQ+ population. While Pride happens once per year, many rainbow-flag-waving corporations turn around and fund anti-LGBTQ+ legislators all year long. It may not be June, but please consider joining us in switching away from companies and brands trying to have it both ways on LGBTQ+ equality. https://lnkd.in/gVCZ9M3G

Last month, I had the chance to speak to the Under Represented Genders Employee Resources Group at Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. 🌈 While I often speak to women's employee resource groups, this was the first time I had the opportunity to speak to a group serving Under Represented Genders. Data from the St. Louis Fed shows that female-headed households hold $0.55 / dollar in wealth for every $1.00 held by male-headed households. 👩👩👧This wealth disparity is even greater when households are led by a member of the LGBTQ+ community. As an example, using 2022 Census Bureau data, 22% of LGBTQ+ adults had household incomes of less than $25,000 versus 14% of non-LGBTQ+ adults. Part of my mission is helping women and other non-traditional wealth builders take charge of their financial future. Learning about HSAs, the investment options in your 401K, how you get taxed when you sell company stock, etc. all helps contribute to investing and wealth building being more universally accessible. 🙏A big thanks to Casey Wheeler and Kim Evernham (she/her) for the opportunity to speak and to Kaylee Carpenter for the introduction. Side note: How cool is the URG's logo highlighting Rosalind Franklin, unsung hero of science whose work underpinned Crick and Watson's discovery of the double helix?? I would love to come and speak to your organization in 2024. Send me a DM if you want to connect before my maternity leave. #womeninscience #lgbtq #wealthbuilding

OUT FOR BIDEN! I am extremely humbled to be partnering with so many iconic LGBTQ+ activists, advocates & community leaders to support President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris with “Out for Biden-Harris!” As Campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez has said, “LGBTQ+ Americans couldn’t have more at stake this election: Donald Trump and his extremist allies are running to gut LGBTQ+ rights and erase history as their top priorities. LGBTQ+ Americans deserve leaders who will fight for every American’s freedom and dignity. That’s what President Biden and Vice President Harris have done throughout their time in office, and what they will do if reelected, including pressing Congress to pass the Equality Act.” This election, there’s so much at stake for the LBGTQ+ community – for our families, our freedoms, and our futures. Out for Biden-Harris will mobilize voters around the clear choice. President Biden believes that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity and be able to live without fear no matter who they are or who they love. We get the government we elect so please join us in re-electing the most pro-LGBTQ+ President and Vice President to ever occupy the White House! #OutForBiden #LGBTQIA #WhiteHouse https://lnkd.in/eYV63X7b

Why LGBTQ+ Voters Will Decide The 2024 Presidential Election The LGBTQ+ voting bloc has more than doubled in the last decade. It's now a larger voting bloc than suburban, white mothers. Both parties would be wise to pay attention to this growing demographic. In 2020, 7% of voters identified as LGBTQ+. Biden won the LGBTQ+ vote in all six 2024 "toss up" states. An 18-point swing among LGBTQ+ voters could flip every swing state. LGBTQ+ voters are as diverse as any other cohort in America. Biden received 64% of the LGBTQ+ vote in 2020, down from Clinton. If this trend continues, Democrats would only get 51% in 2024. This shift could flip Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin to Republicans. LGBTQ+ voters are moderates, with 60% identifying as somewhat liberal to conservative. They aren't enthralled with Biden but trust Democrats more on LGBTQ+ rights. No other demographic saw as large a voting shift from 2016 to 2020. In 2024, the road to the White House runs through the LGBTQ+ community.

Pay equity is a key part of our advocacy as co-founders of the Level Up Greater Pittsburgh Gender Pay Equity Campaign. This #PrideMonth, we're looking further into pay disparities for LGBTQ+ individuals in America. According to a Human Rights Campaign Foundation analysis of nearly 7,000 full-time LGBTQ+ workers, this population earns roughly 90¢ to every dollar made by a typical worker (defined as the median wage for all workers in the U.S.). Black and Indigenous LGBTQ+ people earn even less than this average 90¢, making 80¢ and 70¢ on average, respectively. Trans men make an average of 70¢ to a typical worker’s dollar, and trans women make an average of 60¢. Our Level Up Campaign works to close the wage gap in Pittsburgh. Read more about it by visiting ywcapgh.org/pay-equity.

Only 2% of women-owned businesses in the U.S. *ever* reach seven figures. Even though women (especially women of color) start businesses at a much higher rate than men, only a small percentage of women-owned companies ever scale past $1 million to create real wealth and impact. As a proud woman-owned and LGBTQ-owned company, we’re gate-openers for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ business owners ready to get visible to drive sales and blaze a path for more representation in their field, industry, and world at large. We need more role models out there. We’re still basking in the fact that Full Swing Public Relations ranked #20 on the 2024 #IncRegionals list of fastest-growing companies in the Rocky Mountain region, and #1 for Idaho. When Caitlin founded Full Swing with nothing but a trusty laptop (and a solid friend in Holly Conti helping her on the side) during a weekend in 2019, she was steadfast in her mission to be the woman doing *the* thing. We hope Full Swing’s story shows more #entrepreneurs who don’t fit the mold that they can do it too, even from a place like Idaho, its trigger ban and enshrined LGBTQ discrimination be damned. Because we did it, we know you can, too. #WomensHistoryMonth #ReclaimYourPower #WomenLeadership #QueerVoicesMatter #WomenHelpingWomenEntrepreneurs
