As a site engineer or supervisor. My job is not to teach a brick layer how to lay blocks. That is the knowledge they should have before seeking employment. My role is to guide them, point out errors, and tell areas that may need additional levelling and alignment. As a site engineer, if you surround yourself with workmen who have poor work ethics, the result will always be sub standard. The reason why, one of your greatest strengths should be attention to details. Can you identify errors? Strutinze those working for you and make sure they are competent and truly understand their role. Do not allow them jeopardize the quality of your work as this will affect your reputation. If they can't see the bigger picture and give you quality results, fire them from your site. Be the kind of person that doesn't accept sub standard output. Have the courage to let go anyone unwilling to pursue excellence. Recognise your role and the role of your team. A Day in the Life of a Site Engineer Team Coordination and Task Allocation contd When i was working as a site engineer Once the supervisors and laborers arrived, my primary focus was on task allocation. This wasn't just a simple step; it was about recognizing and leveraging the unique strengths of each laborer. I took time to personally assign tasks, ensuring that the right person was doing the right job. By doing so, I could match their skills with the requirements of specific tasks. For instance, a laborer with technical skills might be assigned to more complex tasks, while those with physical strength might take on more demanding manual work. This thoughtful approach ensured that tasks were completed efficiently and to a high standard. This approach builds trust and respect, creating a collaborative atmosphere where everyone feels they have a stake in the project’s success. These practices had a lasting effect on my leadership skill. A very long time ago as a young engineer I kept a daily site diary. I thought I was ahead of the game with record keeping…. I recorded which subcontractors were on site that day, what interesting plant & equipment was in operation and what the weather was doing. Now, having seen lots of delay claims I would add to the list! ✅What the programme planned activities were for the week. ✅What activities we actually did and in what quantity. ✅Reasons we didn’t achieve planned progress. ✅How did I notify any delays. ✅ A referenced list of daily photographs for each activity.
