It’s not easy to get a job within a Hedge Fund or Asset Manager when your experience is predominantly sell-side. It’s one of the most sought-after moves that candidates are looking for when exploring new opportunities. The interest in buy-side Operations roles far outweighs the interest a similar role on the sell side would see. Competition can be crazy-high. So how does someone, with no previous experience of working within a fund, even stand a chance? · Prime Brokerage experience is almost as good as having a buy-side background, as you’re servicing the Operational needs of different funds. Processing experience is preferred over Client Services, but a PB background is a very good entry point. · Product knowledge is key. Hedge funds are trading multiple products across different strategies. The more detailed your knowledge of some of the more complex products, the better you stand out from the rest. · Broad exposure is your friend. Typically, buy-side teams are smaller with more varied coverage. The more variation you can show, the more appealing your CV will look. · Programming skills are only increasing in demand. If you’re able to automate processes (with evidence to back this up), it will be hard for you to be overlooked. While most hiring managers will probably lean towards those coming from a similar buy-side background, it is possible to make the jump across. You just need your CV to show the knowledge their role needs and the skills that are transferable across sectors.

It's all about how they work with them!
