You CAN'T scale a profitable agency billing by the hour! You CAN'T scale a profitable agency selling low-value, commoditized services to small budget clients! Dogmatic statements like these really piss me off. They lack nuance. They're not helpful, and they're usually being published by someone with a vested interest in making the path to success for agencies appear much more one-dimensional than it actually is. None of those things are true. That's not my opinion, it's just math. Profitability is relative. Be weary of any statement that talks about profitability in absolute terms... chances are, it's not quite right. The truth is, there are a lot of levers you can pull to ensure you're profitable, EVEN IF: - You have low prices - You sell time & materials - You sell small engagements to small businesses - You want to have a 4-day workweek - You want to over-invest in overhead (grow faster, have a nixe office, buy back a lot of admin time so you can work less, etc.) Many agencies come to us feeling insecure or overwhelmed by these blanket statements, thinking they need to change everything to be profitable, or that they're doing something "wrong" What we often discover is that they have more options to get where they want to go than they thought they did, and they often don't need to compromise on their values. Profitability, pricing models, and business strategy (like most things in life) are all very nuanced. I just wish more of the content and conversation being had online around these things reflected that. This was one of the key parts of my chat with Steve Guberman on the Byte-Sized Agency Briefs Podcast hosted by Agency Outsight Coaching. Catch the full conversation with the link in comments. For me its the overhead ratios. We’re small & growing, so my overhead ratios are currently high - and I couldnt grow until I invested in this amazing team to more equally distribute the workload. I think there should be many times on a company’s life cycle where the overhead ratios are high - and then they should dip as you grow until its time to scale up again. If I lead just by some random ‘ideal’ number I’d still be stuck at six figures wondering why I never quite made it to seven. Preach it Marcel 🙌🏻
The same objection applies to A LOT of advice on here. Every situation is unique.
On this topic: I think time & materials is one of the best invoicing models. No complexity, predictable, and very profitable at best. If you're able to do this at scale, it's a no-brainer.
I really like the message of this post! 👏 I think for business owners it's extremly tough to be bombarded with content telling you that what you do is wrong. Social media doesn't leave a lot of room for context but content creators also don't make a lot of effort to add it. Making people insecure about what they do seems the only way to sell services.
Love it
I loved that you showed my company that I don’t actually need to go outside of this model but rather just make some tweaks to help us with our current model!
I get frustrated with those same conversations! Usually said for hits on LinkedIn posts or the like 😰
Marcel Petitpas I love the nuance man. 🚀👊🏻
Loved this episode… so much actionable insights from you. Thanks for joining me on this episode and soon on the Bkueprint for 2025 program!! That’s gonna be 8X as epic.
