Congratulations to The Tulalip Tribes on receiving a $5 million U.S. Department of Transportation RAISE grant for upgrades to two interchanges along I-5. Parametrix partnered with the Tulalip Tribes to write the winning application. “Frequently, I-5 traffic exiting to enter Tulalip Tribes or the City of Marysville at both interchanges experience off ramp backups that can extend back on to the I-5 mainline lanes of traffic,” a webpage for the project states. “This impacts the Tribes and the City as well as the greater Snohomish County area, interstate travel and commerce, and even international trade with Canada.” Read more: https://ow.ly/wj5V50St7jK

It may appear that the recent news of CN's deal with GWRR property CBNS, is tied to container terminal development.. Let's take a look back. There have been two proposals for ConTerm’s going back as far as 2005 for this part of Nova Scotia. Melford International Terminal was the first I recall to be announced. Many favorable features of this proposed terminal, no air draft restrictions, 60'+ draft for ULCC vessels, and ample land available, including shorter sailing time along the Great Circle Route. The second project involved NovaPorte to be located at Sydney, NS. A 500 acre ConTerm was planned within the Port. The developers for NovaPorte have since dropped plans for the proposed terminal, in favor of developing an OWP (Offshore Wind Power) facility. Halifax, and transload via the West Coast, becoming the favored avenue for BCO's. Practically kills any chances (as I currently see it from a market and economic standpoint) of Melford moving forward. Halifax has ample capacity, and Port of Saint John will continue investing in a larger ConTerm footprint. However time may prove my former sentence wrong.. It will be noteworthy to keep an eye on what CN has planned for re-entry into this part of Nova Scotia. Some notable greenfield energy developments (such as this https://lnkd.in/gFnFzR-d.) are planned for NS. I'd say this is more than likely why CN has taken interest again in the region.

Sigh. Yet more “studies” that exclude options that are most likely to be successful. The most obvious route for rail is the Highway 1 right of way. It is already owned by the BC Government and it is already grade separated. Straight too so trains could go 200kph plus. And there is plenty of publically owned land next to it. Cap the highway near the stations and build lots of affordable housing in mixed use developments. Really disappointing and unacceptable the BC Government has not been planning this instead of expensive highway widening.
MVX is quoted in this recent piece on the Province's Fraser Valley regional rail study. We're inspired to see regional rail has the attention of the Provincial Government, and are building on this idea to research innovative delivery and funding structures to accelerate it.

Encouraging to see the BC Government starting to think more about regional rail! As it progresses, I think this is where we should be learning from our friends in Quebec, particularly with the role of pensions in helping finance this kind of infrastructure. If we can underwrite some of these costs through a semi-public fund (and one that loves infrastructure), we can achieve livability, prosperity, and environmental goals all at once. Also great to see Mountain Valley Express (MVX)'s work mentioned in here, too, helping move the dial toward seeing regional rail expansions as a necessary and critical investment for the region.

JR Ball on https://lnkd.in/gZn2KrKD “Am OK with TIFs when used as originally created—which is to spur development in areas where traditional financing doesn’t work, or to spark development in a specific area—but that’s not why the #EBR Metro Council hands them out so freely. As for those who argue these developments—where the TIF goes to the developer to help cover his or her costs—generate new revenue … that can be hard to prove, especially in a parish that has declining population. Is this new sales revenue or simply transferring the sales from an existing retailer or hotel to a new one? I understand the theory on hotel taxes, but the question remains whether or not corporate welfare is necessary to build a hotel in an already fast-growing or vibrant part of the parish. The most defensible TIFs, in my for want it’s worth opinion, went to the King Hotel downtown, Bass Pro in #denhamsprings and the Swaggart dorm-to-hotel conversion on Bluebonnet (that project has a double TIF—hotel/motel and sales taxes).”

Sad to see the MTA delay and NYSDOT not sign off on a community supported rail yard and public space. This initiative is a great example of planning locally where local civics, small business leaders, environmentalists and elected officials at multiple levels of government all came together in support. Not sure what the issue is with DOT and the MTA but it is worth asking questions to understand the rationale for the delay. We are often told that it is local governments that are fractious and block progress. Here is an example of larger entities slowing creative, economically and community enhancing proposals down. Short summary: ✅ Cost of living measures including for mobility such bus/train fares and rego ✅ Continued increases in road and transport infrastructure ($37B over 4 yrs) ✅ Rail a winner including GC and SC 🚆 ❌ Neglible investment in buses (1.1% of budget) ❌ Road maintenance stable ($5.23B over 4). We need more. ❌ Where’s the long term infrastructure plan for Qld’s growth? An extra 2m people in SEQ over next 2 decades.
