In a world often clouded by skepticism, Eleanor Kennedy of the Open Society Foundations brings a beam of optimism to the dialogue on human rights. 🌍✨ Last year's groundbreaking report by OSF, "Can Democracy Deliver?" cuts through the noise, challenging the defeatist narrative that human rights are a relic of the past. Kennedy's insightful analysis reveals a different truth: the heart of human rights still beats strong among those who strive for justice worldwide. 📈📜 It's refreshing to hear that, contrary to the whispers of pessimists, the demise of human rights is not just exaggerated—it's a myth. People from every corner of the globe are actively engaging with the structures and tools of human rights to claim their due, seek justice, and shape societies that respect the dignity of all. ⚖️🤝 📢 Join us for an invigorating discussion with Eleanor Kennedy in the new podcast series of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights "Voices of Dignity : Pathways to justice with Eleanor Kennedy," as we delve into how human rights continue to empower communities and individuals, proving that the principles of equality and fairness are very much alive and at work. As we observe Juneteenth, the AAMC recognizes the significance of this day in American history and the importance of reflecting on our collective journey toward equality. June 19 marks the true end of slavery in the United States, a crucial moment when Major General Gordon Granger and Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Yet, nearly 160 years later, we continue to strive for the fundamental promise of ‘liberty and justice for all.’ Systemic change requires more than new rules; it demands personal accountability, education, courage, and the willingness to engage in difficult conversations. We must unlearn long-held societal norms and confront the ways historical injustices shape today's inequalities. As Frederick Douglass wisely noted, “The life of the nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful, and virtuous.” Let us seize this moment to commit to creating a future where equity and justice are realities for all. #Juneteenth #Equity #AcademicMedicine #SocialJustice

There are persons we meet during our professional life we don't forget. They start to embody the ideal of our professional environment, sometimes because of what they do, other times because of the way how they do it. This award is honouring those who protect democracy, who fight for rights and who stand up. In memory of Mayor Pawel Adamowicz who was murdered because of his stance. I had the honour to accompany him to Belarus where we spoke with civil society organisations about how to support them and help them and also Armenia in the difficult year 2015. And I remember our conversation about his way of being a mayor, how to ensure transparency and how to relate to citizens. We see that democracy has experienced a continuous decline, one in four countries is only advancing while four out of nine are worse off with regard to the quality of democracy. Authoritarianism is on the rise and even high performing countries in Europe have suffered declines with regard to rights and reoresentation according to the Global State of Democracy Report 2024 by IDEA https://lnkd.in/efMV6yY3 So, if you want to take a stance, please spread the call for candidatures because we have to strengthen those who take a stance. Nominations are open until 31st of October. #democracy #transparency #younglocalleaders #humanrights International IDEA European Committee of the Regions
Nominations are still open for the Mayor Paweł Adamowicz Award, honoring leaders who promote democracy, freedom, solidarity, and human rights in their communities. 🌍 If you know someone who fights for inclusion, equality, and peaceful coexistence, this is your chance to spotlight their incredible work! ✨ Submit a nomination here: https://ow.ly/xuKj30sH6ea 📅 Deadline for nominations: 31 October 2024

𝐈T𝐀L𝐘'𝐒 𝐀N𝐓I G𝐀N𝐃H𝐈 𝐃E𝐂R𝐄E The sit-in, a symbol of peaceful resistance dating back to the U.S. civil rights movement, has been a powerful tool for non-violent protest across the globe. Inspired by figures like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., it represents defiance without violence, where protesters simply sit and wait, not resisting but standing firm in their cause. Yet in Italy today, this form of protest faces criminalisation under a new security decree. With 𝟮𝟰 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵, 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. What was once a legitimate act of peaceful protest, like a sit-in or a peaceful march, now risks being criminalised. Blocking a road or railway in protest of social or environmental injustice could now lead to prison sentences of up to two years. As the OSCE warns, this law risks undermining core democratic freedoms, turning peaceful protest into a criminal act and putting the future of civil dissent in jeopardy. read more ➡ https://lnkd.in/d9kzx4uH #civilrights #humanrights #italy #youth #migrants
