May 8. May-8. Mate. 🤝 Today is the 8th of May, and while you might not recognise the date (and might not have any idea what it’s symbolic of), we’re here to tell you that today IS pretty important for some of us. Suggested as a better, more appropriate and respectful day to celebrate ‘Australia Day’ (which we, here at EVER, do not celebrate on the 26th of January), the 8th of May is a day to focus on friendship and connection. If you, like us, don’t celebrate the 26th of January, and are looking for a different day to love our country and the people who live here, it might be worth considering May 8. Today is Canada Day. As we celebrate this country's rich history and diverse culture, we must also acknowledge the complex and painful history experienced by Indigenous communities. Today, let's honor and respect their contributions, resilience, and ongoing struggles. Here are some ways you can celebrate Canada Day: ➡️Educate yourself on the history and current issues faced by Indigenous communities. ➡️Support Indigenous businesses, artists, artisans, and entrepreneurs. ➡️Attend Indigenous-led events. ➡️Use your voice to support policies and initiatives that aim to reconcile and improve relationships with Indigenous folks. ➡️Take time to reflect on the land we celebrate today and recognize the traditional territories and original stewards of these lands.

Here are some interesting facts about Canada Day: 1. **Birth of a Nation**: Canada Day marks the anniversary of the confederation of Canada on July 1, 1867, when the British North America Act (now known as the Constitution Act) came into effect, uniting the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (which became Ontario and Quebec). 2. **Originally Called Dominion Day**: The holiday was originally called Dominion Day until it was renamed Canada Day in 1982, following the passage of the Canada Act which gave Canada full sovereignty from the United Kingdom. 3. **Nationwide Celebrations**: Canada Day is celebrated with various events and activities across the country, including parades, fireworks, concerts, and barbecues. The largest celebration is held in Ottawa, the capital city, featuring performances, cultural displays, and a massive fireworks show.

Happy MAY 2-4, May Long, and Victoria Day to all Canadians! No, it’s not Canada Day (that’s July 1), but this is our second most important national holiday. THIS is the start of summer for us! And despite it being May 20 this year (it’s always the penultimate Monday in May) we always call it May 2-4 as it has so often fallen on the 24th of May (and for another reason many Canadians will know). In recent years, quite understandably, there has been movement change the name and call the day Victoria and First People’s Day to recognize and honour the people whose land we are on here in Canada. There was a petition for this in 2013 which went to then PM Stephen Harper, but it didn’t pass. Originally the official birthday of Queen Victoria and the celebration for her in the Commonwealth, it’s gradually over the years become our national celebration of the beginning of summer! The weather is beginning to become warmer (yes, it does!) and BBQs come out, backyards get groomed and families start gathering. Cottages open and the brave can even jump in the lake. And of course there is beer (hence the reference to the 2-4). Here’s hoping all Canadians have been enjoying their May Long and playing safely. (And Albertans have bundled up for the obligatory May snowstorm.) Happy start of summer everyone. #FourSquareMindfulness #HappyVictoriaDay #StaySafe #VictoriaDay #LongWeekend #canada #VictoriaDayWeekend #VictoriaDayLongWeekend #MayLongWeekend #mindfulness #meditation #MindfulMeditation #gratitude #JustBreathe #LoveIsAVerb #LoveIsActivism #LoveLearningLiberation #DiversityIsOurStrength

On Monday, we celebrate 🇨🇦 and our 157th birthday, I wanted to share what Canada Day means to me: 1. National Pride: It’s a day to celebrate Canadian culture, achievements, and values. 2. Historical Reflection: Many take the time to reflect on the history of Canada, including its founding and development over the years. 3. Cultural Diversity: Canada Day often highlights the country’s multiculturalism and the contributions of various communities. 4. Family and Community: It’s a time for gatherings, parades, fireworks, and other local/national events. 5. Acknowledgement of Indigenous Peoples: Increasingly, there’s recognition of the complex history and the need to acknowledge and reconcile with the Indigenous peoples of Canada. What does Canada Day mean to you personally? Please post in the comment section.
