As a civil engineer, I have been fascinated by the important and massive industrial complex of the Mon Valley Works for most of my career. I relished my brief opportunity to perform some work there years ago. Just looking at the structures and operations at the facility, the history of the place just hits you in the face. Some of the facility probably hasn't changed since the 19th century. There are descriptions of the facility from as far back as the 1880's in one of my favorite books, Thomas Bell's Classic "Out of this Furnace". And yet, as highlighted in this article in the PBT, there is a technological change a brewing to respond to modern challenges. Kudos United States Steel Corporation. Now employees and visitors alike can marvel at both the history and innovation at this impressive facility.
