This. there is no such thing as 'objective' futures/foresight work. It of course should be based on science, facts, cogent analysis and clear projections based on signals and insights but often professed objectivity and claims of being value neutral is in fact tacit or explicit support of the status quo and existing power structures and an acceptance that the way things have been done is the way they will always be done. All futures are radical and we need to be willing to explore, express and connect with that. A great read with so many important points. If we are not doing this work to change the world for the better, why bother.

I am happy to announce the publication of my book, 'Reimagining Radical Democracy in the Global South: Emerging Paradigms from Colombia and Türkiye', co-authored with Kaan Ağartan, and published by Cambridge University Press! This work explores how contemporary social movements in Colombia and Turkey challenge existing liberal democratic frameworks and inspire new expressions of citizenship and non-capitalist alternatives. We argue in this book that radical democracy, traditionally rooted in Eurocentric perspectives, must be rethought in light of the innovative forms of political activism emerging from these Global South contexts. We find that COVID created challenges & risks of democratic backsliding, but it wasn't all bad--there were also hopeful responses and resiliencies... "Across the globe, countries are grappling with declining trust in politics in different ways. There is a job to be done to ensure our 20th century democratic norms and institutions are brought into the 21st century. Technology will play a role, as it has done so spectacularly well in Taiwan. But there is also a need to bring power closer to people, to ensure that democracy can engage with the messy reality of ordinary life and not just be limited to a trip to the ballot box every few years." ... "At present, our political economy is disconnected from the lives of ordinary people and their aspirations for where they live. Large multinationals might be able to identify countrywide consumer trends, but they’re unlikely to know what the needs of a community might be, let alone what people want the place they live to be like. For many, ‘the economy’ and the state it is in is experienced in their communities and neighbourhoods as much as in their pockets. Does the high street feel vibrant or run-down? Do they have the services and amenities they expect – pub, post office, park – on their doorstep? To build an economy on these ordinary hopes means building a political economy that is closer to people." I love the work we do at EI2, but it can sometimes be difficult to describe how all of the programs fit together. This is a great explanation from our VP, B. Once again, for those in the cheap seats, reality does not matter anymore. People are increasingly inhabiting their own metaphysical realities. And these 'separate realities' largely shape their subsequent choices - regardless of objective political and economic realities. Macro-economic and macro-political contexts can have some passive impact on individual-level choices but that linkage can no longer be an assumption. Changes (or levels) of macro-contexts are not determinants of individual-level behaviors. Only how people see reality can be. 📢 The Graduate Inequality Review (GIR) Annual Conference, held in July had over 50 researchers and practitioners from all corners of the world, joining both in-person and online. 🌍 The half-day conference titled ‘Convergence in Times of Divergence: Documenting and Overcoming Inequality’, was centred on the effects of inequalities, and how individuals and institutions alike can overcome these difficulties. New Paper: "A Note on Motivated Cognition and Discriminatory Beliefs," co-authored with Florian Zimmermann (IZA - Institute of Labor Economics and ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy), was just published in Games and Economic Behavior. Today is a major day for Notre Dame's Democracy Initiative. After a University-wide call for Democracy Catalyst Funding proposals, today we announce that the Initiative awarded funding to 40 research, education, and convening projects led by 70 scholars representing colleges, schools, centers, and institutes across campus and across the disciplines. These multi-year investments will support research and education projects led by Notre Dame faculty and students and convenings that will bring together prominent democracy scholars from around the world. They are led by 70 scholars across campus, including historians, data scientists, philosophers, theologians, economists, designers, education researchers, and more. These awards represent faculty in five colleges and schools, including the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Science, the Keough School of Global Affairs, the Mendoza College of Business, and Notre Dame Law School. Project leaders also represent a wide array of centers and institutes, including the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, the McGrath Institute for Church Life, the Institute for Educational Initiatives, the Institute for Social Concerns, and the many international institutes in the Keough School.
