The UN #SummitoftheFuture and the Wellbeing of Current and Future Generations present a powerful framing and a once-in-a-generation opportunity that is inspiring hope, energy and agency. The Declaration on Future Generations (DFG), due to be adopted at the Summit, signals widespread recognition that short-term crisis management is insufficient to address today’s challenges. It invites governments and multilateral organisations to instead prioritise long-term thinking in policy and planning. But how do we turn this ambition into concrete action and impact? ✨📘 So today, SOIF is launching the Implementation Handbook for the UN Declaration on Future Generations! 📘✨ There are many innovators around the world who are already making visible changes in governing for the long term. We've drawn on research and interviews with hundreds of changemakers across more than 50 countries to produce an Implementation Handbook, outlining a practical roadmap for national-level champions—policymakers and civil society—to embed intergenerational fairness and long-term governance principles into their national strategies. About us
The School of Internationals Futures (SOIF) is a not-for-profit consultancy. We exist to help you and your organisation navigate uncertainty and make resilient and better decision in an increasingly uncertain and complex world. There has never been a greater need for long-term thinking. In an increasingly uncertain and volatile world, School of International Futures exists to help organisations use foresight to impact decision-making today. We can help you think differently – and confidently – about the future, and to develop the skills and insight you need to impact decision-making today. Foresight is not about predicting the future, but understanding your current and future operating environment. Insights gained from foresight equip organisations to recognise and respond to emerging threats and opportunities by developing enhanced competitiveness, resilience and agility. For foresight to have impact, it needs to be conceived from the outset with the decision-maker, policy-maker, or other client of the work in mind. SOIF’s practical four-stage approach – Scoping, Ordering uncertainty, Implications and Integrating Futures – and learning journey helps us design and teach foresight that can be used to impact decision-making today. I get it—every one of us movement-builders wants to shift power and narratives. But where do we start? The journey can feel overwhelming and often lead to paralysis. Part of that hesitation stems from the common misconception that shifting narratives is just about moving from false stories to true ones. Reality is far more complex. So our work is about uncovering deeper truths beneath surface-level stories, seeing how the two connect, and finding new possibilities for real change in those connections. In search of ways to begin this process, I developed Stories Through the Prism—a tool that has helped me support survivors, advocates, and organizations in the long journey of narrative change: https://lnkd.in/eTR6Hm_t A huge thank you to the School of International Futures (SOIF) for giving me the space to explore and develop this work alongside incredible colleagues Lenka Chobotová Kushal Sohal Nonzwakazi (Nzwaki) Adonisi, CA (SA) 🌱 💜

It was a pleasure to join Roger Spitz tonight in discussing his new book - "Disrupt With Impact - Achieve Business Success in an Unpredictable World." Thank you Next Generation Foresight Practitioners and Sarah Spencer for hosting the space for us. 🙂 In collaborating with Roger through the Disruptive Futures Institute, I've had the pleasure of engaging with literature on transformative, long-term value creation in the face of risk and uncertainty. This is especially in liaising with Lux Carbon Standard and interrogating the role of Antifragile, Anticipatory and Agile (AAA) governance of Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs) for the long-term. 👉 Roger's book explores AAA governance, among other principles of sustainable value creation, particularly looking at themes of Greenaissance, bridging technological and commercial readiness and navigating an UN-VICE world. 🤔 In the face of crises, how can businesses actually perform better through principles of antifragility? How can businesses use strategic foresight to better navigate not just complicated, but complex scenarios? How might anticipatory and agile principles also support long-term value creation in an UN-VICE world? 👍 And (most) importantly, how can businesses debias their worldviews and assumptions to mitigate risk and enact transformative foresight that generates long-term opportunities and sustainable value creation? Many thanks Roger, and best of luck with your continued book launch! Techistential (Strategic Foresight & Sustainable Futures) School of International Futures (SOIF)

Immensely proud of the INCREDIBLE work of the team - a wonderful mix of longstanding members and wider community colleagues coming together in service of a great innovative systems leader - who have driven change. It's a great example of field and movement building in practice in AN INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT AND DIFFICULT FIELD - leading to innovation, capability building and transformative outcomes... Power-brokering is at the core of what foresight can contribute - and this kind of programme is an intervention that can support and empower this at scale. huge congratulations Evy Peña Nonzwakazi (Nzwaki) Adonisi, CA (SA) Kushal Sohal Lenka Chobotová Abi Nokes Peter Glenday and many others

Thank you PUSKAPA at University of Indonesia for allowing me to host a workshop on the future of extreme heat governance for children’s well-being in Jakarta! This was part of my Next Generation Foresight Practitioners fellowship, where I have been exploring what enables or disables extreme heat governance outcomes in global cities, using futures and foresight methodologies. Thank you Clara Siagian for helping set this up, and for Ainun Nisa and Widi Sari for being wonderful participants and co-organisers. It was excellent to get your expert input. Likewise, Daniel Riveong, APF thank you for helping promote the workshop. And I think it’s always worth giving john a. sweeney a big shout out for being my mentor on this NGFP fellowship. John - your support has been instrumental during this fellowship. 🙋♂️ If we were to ask what the exact causes of extreme heat exacerbation are, it’d be hard to put a finger on it. Urban Heat Island effect? Lack of urban greening? Lack of AC? 🤔 But the reality is complex, particularly for a messy, diffuse and intersectional problem like heat. ❗️ So how do we bring attention to it and enable long-term action that addresses vulnerabilities among exposed demographics - such as children? This workshop sought to address the short, medium and long term factors that must become a confluence in order to achieve effective long-term, intergenerationally fair extreme heat governance. 🧐 How can the framing of heat better draw attention to it as a crisis, and a social issue that affects young people more acutely? 🤔 How can coalition creation and the identification of co-benefits promote solution building, and overcome policy inaction? All these questions, and more, were explored in the workshop. Thinking a lot about democracy, pluralism, governance, and the future. Trying to see around the corner and then actually make it around the corner.
Improving the world by imagining how it could be different and then acting on that vision has animated me for the last few years. Leveraging the tools of #strategicforesight, #futuresthinking and #futuredesign (see attached School of International Futures (SOIF) paper below), I've come to believe that imagining a path forward towards better futures is essential to move beyond today's complicated, volatile and fractured present. I've had the privilege to discuss these concepts with my rabbi, Benjamin Spratt, and am thrilled that he is applying them in his work at Congregation Rodeph Sholom. Just a couple of weeks ago, Rabbi Spratt discussed future design in his Rosh Hashana sermon. He began by reflecting on the future design experiment in 2015 in Yahaba, Japan, that Tatsuyoshi Saijo and others have documented, in which a town council was divided into two groups to represent the interests and opinions of today, and the other to role play the future citizens of Yahaba living in the year 2060. They learned that role play as imaginary future people in 2060 changed their capacity to think about present action in order to protect future generations. It promoted their sense of empathy and increased their willingness to give some things up today to make things better for others in the future. He then talked about how he adapted this exercise to a difficult school visit designed to address tensions resulting from the Middle East crisis. "I asked the students to imagine the world of their grandchildren. We pour so much of our energy into this moment, believing that we know absolutely who is the villain and who the victim, what is the path of morality and what of immortality. But in the myopia of the moment, our gaze set two inches in front of us, we fail to notice how little is indeed set, how often the wolf and the sheep may wear one another’s clothes, how entwined are trauma and triumph, and how rarely will the volume of our voice actually change the hearts of our opponents. When we lift our eyes, however, when we imagine the long possibilities before us, we can see how many different paths may lead us towards the desired horizon point. Even more, we may find that across differing identities and ideologies, many of us yearn for the same distant future. And in realizing this, we may also see that even in the fracture of this moment, there is a shared future that calls to us with responsibility." Two weeks later, Rabbi Spratt received an email from one of the most skeptical of the students. She wrote, “I’m tired of just being angry, as though somehow yelling at people makes anything better. So I tried your exercise of imagining the future. I tried it with my friends, and then my family. And I’m writing really just to say thanks. Because maybe there is another way. And maybe there is a point to hoping.” As we mark a year of intense grief, we must activate our agency to build better collective futures. Future generations are depending on us.
