The votes have been counted, and a new government has been elected. But our ask remains the same👇 #MakethistheConvo until everyone has a place to call home. As we welcome the new government, we would like to thank everyone who helped to make ending homelessness a key focus during this election period. We know that homelessness can be ended, and we see hope given to so many people each day. However, unfortunately we’re also seeing record numbers of people in crisis arriving at our door. In 21st-century Britain, it is simply unacceptable that anyone should have to sleep out on our streets. During the election campaign, we outlined the three areas that need to be delivered by whoever won the election, to end homelessness: https://lnkd.in/euvRf8Wc We look forward to working with the new government to bring about the change that is required to achieve our vision of a society where everyone has a place to call home. What we ask from you is simple, continue this important conversation💬 #EndingHomelessness #EmergencyOnOurStreets

5 Tips to writing an impactful letter to Congress by Catholic Relief Services: 1. Credential Yourself -Identify yourself as a constituent -List the organization that you represent or are a member of. 2. Keep it Short -Limit your letter to 1 page (if possible). -What do you want them to do? 3. Be Yourself -Why does this issue matter to you? -Have you traveled or met someone impacted by this issue? (Include a personal story (makes your letter more compelling & stand out.) 4. Ask -What do you want your legislator to do? -Be clear and specific; (i.e.“Vote yes in support of bill [name and number of bill].”) 5. House Keeping -Use the appropriate address and salutation. -Be polite. People respond better to positive communication. -Write legibly if writing your letter by hand. -Proofread your letter for typos & other mistakes. -According to Capitol Hill's security protocols, you'll need to send your letter to the district office which can be found on their websites. Or the general sites of the House and Senate: house.gov/ or senate.gov/ #community #speakup #congress
While the House has avoided a government shutdown, let's make sure that Congress doesn't shut down the possibility of increasing needed homelessness funds. Take action & tell your reps to support the Senate's asks here: https://lnkd.in/gE-p2rVk

The latest government figures released this week paint a grim reality: the housing crisis has spiralled out of control. 📈 a staggering 16% increase in people losing their homes in the last three months of last year. 📈 record numbers of children living in temporary accommodation. The safety net meant to shield us all is broken, leaving our most vulnerable to suffer. And as if that's not enough, the proposed Criminal Justice Bill threatens to further marginalise those already forced to sleep rough. We need real solutions that prioritise people over politics. We need policies that protect and empower, not punish and exclude. It's time to demand change! As we gear up for a crucial general election, we're calling on all parties to step up and commit to ending homelessness once and for all. 🏠 Will you stand with us in this fight for a brighter, more inclusive future? ✊ Add your name now and let's make our voices heard! 👉https://ow.ly/iznK50RuTux

Last week's blog looked at what you can do if you suspect someone is facing homelessness. You might be thinking, what do you mean ‘suspect’ someone is facing homelessness? Surely it would be obvious 🤷♀️ Well, that’s not always the case. Not everybody in this situation is sleeping rough. Some people are living in uncertain temporary accommodation placements or sofa surfing, whilst others have faced trauma that’s left them fearful of seeking support. The hidden homeless. I recently came across this article - what an inspiring story. It demonstrates perfectly the complex nature of homelessness and, more importantly, the fact that every person dealing with it has their own story and experience. Contrary to the stereotypes and assumptions that society often makes, many people facing homelessness are also struggling to stay in employment or education. It’s about as far removed from an easy existence as you can get. As Mr Milligan says in the article: "Most of your energy and time is put into trying to stay dry, trying to stay warm, fed, clean, not getting your stuff stolen, all of that, and by the time you've managed to do all of that, you've very little time and energy to do other things." Have a read, and if you’d like to help us make a difference, get in touch to see how you can get involved. #SimonsBigSleepOut #Stereotypes #Homelessness _____________________________________________ Register now for Simon’s Big Sleep Out https://lnkd.in/eVNnYTJh

🚨 Only a few days left! Join us in taking action to rally in Washington, D.C., next week as #SCOTUS prepares to hear #JohnsonVGrantsPass. 🔹 The question before the court is: can cities that fail to meet everybody’s basic needs of housing or shelter punish people with no choice but to sleep outside by using things like blankets or pillows? 🔹 The outcome will determine whether the United States will be a country that fines or arrests people for experiencing homelessness or a country that invests in solutions that ensure everyone has a safe, decent, and affordable home. 🔹 There are alternatives to arresting people that communities can act on now. 🗓️ Monday, April 22 ⏰ 10 AM — 12 PM 📍 U.S. SUPREME COURT // 1 FIRST STREET, D.C. 🔗 Learn more: https://bit.ly/3xmp8dv

"Affordable homes are built with ballots every bit as much as they are built with bricks and drywall." 💯 Created through the Our Homes, Our Votes campaign, the report "Voters Choose Housing" looks at nearly 100 state and local ballot measures from the 2022 elections. The study finds that, overall, housing and homelessness ballot measures were overwhelmingly successful, with voters approving substantial new resources for affordable homes, establishing and strengthening tenant protections, and reforming zoning laws to facilitate housing development.
