#SECURITY: European Parliament adopts new laws on security-relevant #passengerdata The European Parliament has adopted laws updating how airlines gather and transmit security-relevant passenger information ahead of flights. MEPs adopted two laws on Advance Passenger Information (API), which had already been agreed with the European Council, enhancing security at the EU’s external borders. #Biometric data was excluded from the scope of the laws. After the success of our recent blog on the self-bag drop market, we put together another - this time taking a deeper dive into the realm of automated border control (ABC) eGates. Check out our analysis in the post below, which draws on data from our new smart airports tracker service. Interested and attending #PTEExpoConf next week? Let me know and I'll happily share more info. Otherwise, drop me a line to schedule a demo and learn more. #airports #airlines #aviation #automation #biometrics #bordercontrol
As we continue to roll out updates to our new smart airports tracker service, let's take a deeper look at the market for automated border control (ABC) eGates! ✈ At the end of 2023, Valour Consultancy estimates that there were 5,650 ABC eGates in use in airports throughout the world. Evidently, there is plenty of room for the ABC eGate market to continue its rapid growth, and as such, the market is very hotly contested. 📈 🔵 Vision-Box, an AMADEUS company, leads the way with a 29% share of tracked deployments. 🔵 Magnetic Autocontrol GmbH is the second largest player with a 21% share with EASIER rising up the rankings in recent years to occupy third place and an 12% share of tracked deployments. 🔵 Newer players are seeking to make a dent too and put larger players like Gunnebo and dormakaba on notice. 🔵 Digicon S/A, for example, recently secured a major vote of confidence when it was selected, along with IDEMIA, to update the border control system in the arrivals section of eight major Australian airports. The expansion of biometric technology in airports streamlines travel, enhancing efficiency and security. However, it raises significant privacy concerns, given the sensitivity of biometric data. There's also the risk of data breaches and questions about data regulation and access. Moreover, reliance on such technology could widen the digital divide, as not all travelers are equally tech-savvy. While biometrics offer convenience, they also pose challenges in data protection, equity, and the potential for biases, especially in facial recognition. This shift is reshaping our approach to identity verification and personal data in an increasingly digital world. #BiometricTechnology #AirportSecurity #TravelEfficiency #PrivacyConcerns #DigitalIdentity #TechTrends #FacialRecognition #DataProtection #FutureOfTravel #DigitalDivide #InnovationInTravel

Way back in 2015 when I had the opportunity to attend the Government Discussion Forum being conducted by the Asia-Pacific Smart Card Association (APSCA), I attended a breakout session on the new generation ID card (at that time) and I mentioned to the participants that as part of our country's Unified Multi-purpose Identification (UMID) project during that time, I was looking into an ID-less form identification where it would be our biometrics that would serve as the individual's main identifier. I was looking then at the possibility of transacting with both private companies and government agencies without anymore the use of ID but more of biometric readers where individuals would just connect and then their personal information would be pulled-out / downloaded to the computers of the agencies to prove the individual's identity. Of course, there are financial implications for less developed and developing countries, hence, it is really a must that this should be fully tested by first-world countries like the USA.

News of the Day Aviation experts are warning about potential chaos at European airports this summer as liquid restrictions are set to be reintroduced. The European Commission has announced that from September 1 the 100ml liquid restriction will apply once again - meaning all liquids, gels, pastes and aerosols must be less than 100mkl and placed inside a clear plastic bag before you take them through airport security at any EU airport. It means holidaymakers travelling throughout Europe will no longer be able to carry any liquids measuring more than 100ml in their hand luggage. The temporary restrictions will begin from September 1 in all EU airports - including those which have installed new-generation C3 scanning equipment for hand luggage. Europe’s branch of Airports Council International (ACI) has condemned this move, saying it will likely lead to significant delays at border screening - right in time for the summer holidays. “It will result in significant operational strain, the mitigation of which will require the deployment of additional staff and the reconfiguration of security checkpoints, where feasible,” a press release from the organisation read. The U-turn follows on from many airports installing new C3 scanners at security gates, which in theory will allow for liquids over 100ml to be carried through on to the plane. However, this has now been reversed. #europe #PersonalTravelConsultant

Exciting biometric news for Denver International Airport - City & County of Denver Dept of Aviation! Excerpt from the attached article: "When travelers depart on international flights, they will pause for a photo at the departure gate. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Biometric Exit process will compare the new photo of the traveler to a small gallery of high-quality images that the traveler has already provided to the U.S. Government, such as passport and visa photos. This allows travelers to board international flights without handing their passport to a gate agent. Airlines are also able to utilize the devices to cross-reference passenger lists, allowing passengers to board without scanning a physical or digital boarding pass. Facial images, taken during the boarding process, are only used for real time verification. Airlines immediately delete any photos taken during this process and will not retain any photos taken during boarding for any purpose." #biometrics #facialrecognition #DenverInternationalAirport
