We're pleased to announce that we have received $2 million in funding from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)’s new Green Neighbourhoods Pilot Project and the Toward Net-Zero Homes and Communities program to accelerate the adoption of deep energy retrofits in social housing across eastern Ontario. This significant investment will support our Retrofit Accelerator and help make homes more energy-efficient, increasing household savings and reducing emissions in underserved communities. Our goal with this project is ambitious but essential: we’re working to reduce energy use in social housing by 50% and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%, all while keeping retrofit costs under $30,000 per unit. By setting these high targets, we aim to show that significant energy savings and emissions reductions can be achieved—without displacing tenants. This initiative is about more than buildings; it’s about improving lives and fostering a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gThuPYNR

The Local Growth and Sustainability Grant (LGSG) is a new infrastructure grant program that will address growth pressures for municipalities throughout Alberta. Alberta’s government is launching the Local Growth and Sustainability Grant to help local communities manage population growth pressure on public infrastructure. Alberta’s dynamic economy has led to rapid population growth, which is creating challenges for local communities as more and more people use their roads, bridges, and water treatment systems. Budget 2024 introduced the Local Growth and Sustainability Grant to help communities manage these challenges. The Local Growth and Sustainability Grant will provide $60 million over three years to assist communities that are experiencing significant growth. It will also allow communities to capitalize on economic development opportunities including support for new industrial and commercial development. Applications for the Local Growth and Sustainability Grant are now open and close on November 29, 2024. https://lnkd.in/g_AtcPSn

🌍 Yesterday, 24 October, residents and community groups came together to launch Year 4 of the Haringey Community Carbon Fund! Councillor Mike Hakata, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment, and Transport, and our Climate Change team provided an overview of the fund, which supports projects aimed at reducing energy consumption, waste and associated carbon emissions across Haringey. The event included opportunities for attendees to share project ideas, reflect on past funded projects, and participate in co-design workshops to develop new initiatives. There was also a session dedicated to shaping the future of the fund to ensure it continues to meet the community’s needs. Part of the council’s Climate Change Action Plan, the Haringey Community Carbon Fund offers grants that empower residents, groups, and businesses to launch impactful, carbon-cutting projects. This is funded by the carbon offset contribution secured through Section 106 agreements if developers cannot meet the net zero carbon standard for new developments. 🌱 The fund has supported 26 projects over the past three years, and this year’s round, our biggest yet, offers £112,000 to bring more community-led ideas to life. Applications open on 1 November 2024. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ezdMbW8D #CommunityCarbonFund #ClimateAction #Haringey #Sustainability #CoDesign

BESS ⚡️ S36 consent granted for the Smeaton BESS project, East Lothian (c228MW) Another interesting decision on community benefit: 👉 ELC are the latest authority to seek community benefit conditions on the basis of NPF4 policy 11(c) (development proposals must “maximise net economic impact”). 👉 As we have seen with the recent Bunloinn and Creag Riabhach Ext decisions Ministers rejected the proposal. Although this time by specific reference to Circular 4/1998: "The Scottish Ministers have imposed the conditions requested by the Planning Authority where these are considered to meet the tests of Scottish Government Circular 4/1998 (‘the circular’). However, matters pertaining to the provision or otherwise of Community Benefit by the Company are not material considerations in the assessment of this application and are not necessary in terms of the circular. The provision of financial community benefit has therefore not been secured by condition." A useful precedent that bolsters the grounds for resisting CB conditions. And pours more cold water on the proposals in THC’s Social Values Charter to “seek to secure socio-economic benefits, including community benefits, through planning conditions”. 💯% consent rate for standalone BESS s36 proposals remains. And still no inquiries. As with the vast majority of BESS projects, Smeaton was not EIA development.

What can we learn from the Canadian experience of retrofitting? This briefing explores what lessons we can learn from the Canadian experience, as municipalities and provinces develop and attempt to scale their retrofit activities. It looks at four elements of their work: improvements to their own community buildings; refurbishment of social housing; support for owner occupiers; and working with remote rural communities. It is behind a paywall... However, if you work in a local government in England or Scotland your council is almost certainly a member of LGIU; so are many other organisations that work with local authorities. Message me if you would like to read but have problems accessing. https://lnkd.in/eCaP9j2H Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) Freya Millard #LGIU #canada #canadian #localgovernment #localgov #localauthorities #municipalities #municipal #retrofit #retrofitting #climatechange #climateaction #localclimateaction #lowcarbonsolutions #homeretrofit #domesticretrofit
