Did you know riverflies can help us assess water quality? 🌿 Riverflies are invertebrates that spend most of their life cycle in a river, stream, pond or lake. Along with other freshwater invertebrates, they are at the heart of the freshwater ecosystem and are a vital link in the aquatic food chain. Their common characteristics of limited mobility, relatively long life cycle, presence throughout the year and specific tolerances to changes in environmental conditions make them useful indicators of water quality, pollution, siltation and low flows. Support our appeal to set up a Riverfly Monitoring Scheme on the only protected river in Kent, the River Beult. With your help, and with the support of our partners Kent Wildlife Trust we can train citizen scientist volunteers to survey riverflies and shape restoration plans. 💙 Pledge today and start saving our rivers: https://lnkd.in/eeE3X-6i #crowdfunder #crowdfunding #fundraising #conservation #Kent

GROW Louisiana Coalition donates $25,000 towards Ducks Unlimited historic campaign for coastal restoration! Aiming to raise $3 billion, the Ducks Unlimited "Conservation for a Continent" campaign is restoring coastal habitats nationwide. This builds on its success in conserving over 16 million acres of wetlands over its history. It's important to note that Louisiana's energy industry, a key player in the state's economy, is also a significant contributor to the Ducks Unlimited mission. Recently, Forbes Magazine detailed the "Conservation for a Continent" campaign; read more below. -> https://lnkd.in/gr-zEcM7 #ducksunlimited #conservation #growlouisiana #louisianaenergy

The Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its fifth mass coral bleaching event in eight years. There was no ‘mass’ coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef prior to 1980! The events are getting more frequent, severe, and widespread. The best way to slow this trajectory is rapid and drastic reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. However, the IPCC says restoring the function of the environment must occur in tandem. We have been doing that on land worldwide for a long time. Coral reefs present a different challenge, but we must be up for the fight. Reef Restoration Foundation’s signature Resilience & Recovery program uses mobile coral nurseries to build and preserve healthy spawning stock. It works with nature to accelerate coral larvae production that adds hundreds of millions of baby corals to the system. It’s easily replicated and operated by communities, plus it is a means of dispersal for the progeny of heat adapted corals. We need sponsors and donors now! The recording and presentation slide deck from AGRRA's 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 are now available: https://lnkd.in/ednW-WKM KEY TAKEAWAYS: 📜 Have a plan ahead of time. 👉 It does not need to be complex. 👉 Agree on triggers for action. 👉 Consider obtaining permits preemptively for likely response actions. 🌊 Act early, before seeing obvious signs of stress. 👩🔬 Prioritize protecting genetic diversity over biomass. 👉 Build redundancy into your restoration efforts, i.e., ensure each genotype is in each nursery to spread out risk. 🌡 Monitor as much as possible to understand long-term impacts. Ideally, conduct monitoring before, during, and after heat stress. 💬 Communicate frequently. Be mindful that there are multiple communication channels, including channels for those who work directly on the reef and the communities who are either directly or indirectly impacted by the health of the reef. 📰 Review these key takeaways and additional lessons learned from the 2023 bleaching event in this document prepared by the Florida Coral Reef Resilience Program: https://lnkd.in/gt8tztrw

In recent company news, this past Thursday - May 9th, marked The Balmoral Group's participation in the Orlando 2024 SimplyIOA Corporate 5K fundraiser, which was later converted to a 4K due to a near 100-degree heat index in downtown Orlando! 12,000+ runners and walkers, from more than 500 teams from local corporations and nonprofits participated. Together, more than 110,000 meals for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida were raised. Many TBG staff participated in-person or virtually, as our staff in Seattle did (see pictures below). The event led to a great time hanging with fellow colleagues, family members, and friends, as well. On a different note, we are saddened to hear the passing of Dr. M. Dennis Hanisak from FAU's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI). Dr. Hanisak was a long-standing friend of The Balmoral Group, and a pioneering conservationist. He is remembered as an eminent marine scientist, a devoted teacher and mentor, and a conservationist for the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). Read more on Dr. Hanisak's history and tribute on FAU's HBOI site at fau.edu/hboi In this week’s edition, we feature articles on interesting and relevent topics within CO2 extraction, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) revisions on environmental assessments, carbon offset measures, planned subdivisions within critical Florida conservation land, transportation proposals in Seattle, and more. We hope you enjoy the read and let us know what you think! https://lnkd.in/erqACtbX #TBG #EconomicPerspective #CO2 #environmental #assessment #carbonoffset #development #transportation
