The EPA has just awarded $160 million in grants for reducing embodied greenhouse gases in construction materials and products. Here’s why this is good news if you’re a manufacturer. This funding will accelerate the development of Environmental Product Declarations (#EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessments (#LCAs) across 14 material categories. More importantly the EPA will initially offer EPD development support and direct businesses to resources to help them measure and reduce the embodied carbon. Manufacturers face significant challenges in measuring and reporting environmental impacts when trying to run a business. So this grant program makes it easier than ever by providing resources for robust, high-quality EPDs. The best news, EPA has awarded an extra $60 million than expected to support building material manufacturers in decarbonizing as part of the Buy Clean Initiative. The selected projects will help standardize and expand the market for low-carbon construction products, making it easier for buyers to make sustainable purchasing decisions. From concrete and steel to innovative materials like bamboo and hemp, these efforts will drive innovation across the industry. We're honoured to be working with so many of this list and excited to see how these projects will transform the construction materials landscape. Congrats to friends of Pathways who were awarded funding: Debbie Steckel from ACLCA, Kate Chilton and Tobe Sheldon at BamCore Tyler Hengen, P.E. from AISI, Max Puchtel, SE, PE from AISC, Rachael Jamison from AWC, Lionel Lemay from NRMCA, International Living Future Institute, and many more. Now the real work begins!

🇺🇸 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced last week a new initiative to promote sustainable construction through a low-carbon materials labeling program. Backed by the Inflation Reduction Act, this program aims to decarbonize the building industry by clearly identifying "clean" construction materials. "America has an opportunity to lead the world in developing cleaner construction materials to cut climate pollution and reap unprecedented economic opportunities. By clearly labeling what 'buy clean' means for products like concrete, glass, and steel, EPA will help accelerate demand for these materials and continue to build the clean energy economy." — Michal Freedhoff, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. The program will initially focus on carbon-intensive materials like asphalt, concrete, glass, and steel, relying on environmental product declarations (EPDs) as a crucial way to gather transparent emissions data. This program is set to transform the construction landscape in the U.S., making sustainability a key factor in material selection. Manufacturers will need to adapt quickly, and tools like One Click LCA's EPD Generator (https://lnkd.in/e-jYfvTp ) can help create the required documentation easily and efficiently. 👉 Read the full article to learn how this new program will affect U.S. manufacturing and construction: https://lnkd.in/exZGswuv #SustainableConstruction #EPD #LowCarbonMaterials #GreenBuilding

🌍 Important update for the construction industry: CALGreen takes effect July 1, 2024! 🇺🇸 The construction industry has long been a significant contributor to global carbon emissions. While we’ve made impressive progress in reducing operational carbon — the emissions produced during a building's use phase — embodied carbon, which includes the emissions from manufacturing and transporting construction materials, is now receiving the attention it deserves. To tackle this pressing issue, California has updated CALGreen, the first mandatory green building standards code in the United States. These new requirements, set to take effect on July 1, 2024, aim to significantly reduce the environmental impact of buildings by focusing on embodied carbon. As we approach this important deadline, it's crucial for all stakeholders in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry to familiarize themselves with these changes and prepare for compliance. Learn more in this one-hour course, presented by One Click LCA and USGBC California on June 28 at 10 am PDT, where you will learn about the new embodied carbon reduction requirements and how to achieve them. 👉 https://lnkd.in/djKYpN2p #EmbodiedCarbon #CALGreen #Compliance #lifecycleassessment #lca #construction #sustainability #netzero

⚡ The #construction industry is stuck in a supply-demand deadlock: builders are reluctant to use sustainable materials and technologies due to limited supply, while suppliers are hesitant to produce them because demand is low. Could regulatory changes solve this problem, or are there other approaches to break the cycle and promote sustainable practices in the built environment? Victoria Burrows, Portfolio Development and Industry Partnerships Manager, discusses how effective regulatory frameworks can drive the adoption of sustainable technologies. She argues that while poorly designed regulations can stifle innovation, well-crafted ones can encourage the development and adoption of cutting-edge solutions. But can the built environment undergo a similar transformation? Denmark's new lifecycle assessment (#LCA) requirements for construction projects suggest a possible shift. Yet obstacles like rigid building codes and regional discrepancies persist. The article explores the complexities of regulation and emphasizes the need for collaboration among stakeholders to foster progress. Read on ⤵ https://lnkd.in/dPdxQrw5
