Relink.org would like to share an article from the Health Policy Institute of Ohio with new data on suicide in Ohio. This new resource includes visualizations on suicide prevalence and trends in Ohio, geographic differences in suicide rates and changes in mental health challenges among Ohio high school students. It also includes a list of resources to improve suicide prevention in Ohio. HPIO noted that five people die by suicide every day. Let’s talk about the role of medications when it comes to pediatric mental health. When prescribing medications it’s important to look at the full ecosystem of a child’s health. There are many considerations that factor into how we develop a treatment plan for any child or teen who seeks care at Bend Health. Medication is not always the first option for care, and in fact coaching and therapy should be tried first for most conditions in child/adolescent mental health depending on severity. Medication can help bring a child to a more comfortable and stable baseline, especially when monitored by a psychiatric provider who selects the right medication and the right dose. This is critical because not everyone responds to or tolerates medications. In fact, in some situations, the medication side effects can make things worse! Medications should never be the sole treatment for a mental health condition. For our team at Bend Health, the goal of medication is for kids to be better able to learn crucial coping skills that they need for long-term resilience. That’s why coaching and therapy are important companions to any prescription treatment plan. It is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay 2024. Much can be done at individual, community and national levels to prevent suicide and suicide attempts. WHO’s LIVE LIFE approach recommends four effective, evidence-based key interventions which should be included in every national response to suicide: •limit access to the means of suicide •interact with the media for responsible reporting of suicide •foster socio-emotional life skills in adolescents •early identify, assess, manage and follow up anyone who is affected by suicidal behaviours.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. This World Suicide Prevention Day the theme is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action "Start the Conversation" which aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Use these tools and resources from ACEP to help start those conversations and raise awareness in the ED.

There is evidence that media reports about suicide can enhance or weaken suicide prevention efforts. Widely disseminated stories of death by suicide are often followed by more suicides in the population, while stories of overcoming a suicidal crisis can lead to fewer suicides. Not an uplifting topic, but a very important one. My wife Stacey Gagliano, PhD, NCSP, who is a pediatric psychologist in Pennsylvania, wrote a blog article for her place of employment on suicide prevention. Regardless of what side of the political spectrum you’re on or where you live, suicide is a massive issue and unfortunately one that is growing, particularly amongst young people. Self image, societal pressure, and loss all play a major role as to why that is the case. In honor of September being Suicide Awareness Month, we are hosting a training on 9/7 called, "Harm OCD, Suicidal Ideation, or Both?" It will meet the 4 Suicide Prevention & Awareness CEU requirement for Nevada CPCs / MFTs (& it's also approved for Social Workers in NV!!) Event info: Harm OCD and suicidal ideation may look similar, but there are key differences that are important to understand for effective and ethical treatment planning. Clients with OCD have an increased risk of suicide, and therefore learning to differentiate between harm OCD and SI can improve therapeutic outcomes while helping mental health professionals to limit professional liability. This training will teach you to identify harm OCD, differentiate it from suicidal ideation, and treatment plan accordingly, even when there is a presence of both harm OCD & SI. https://lnkd.in/gBfsn5dJ

A new CMS Innovation Model aims to bridge the gap between mental, physical health, and substance use disorders services. According to CMS, a quarter of all people enrolled in Medicare experience mental illness, and 40 percent of all adults enrolled in Medicaid experience mental illness or substance use disorder.
