🏁No matter how busy work is, it’s essential to wind down. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 – how do you strike the right balance and blow off steam? For Maikel Abbenbroek, 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹 𝗔𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗸, 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 (𝗕𝗢𝗬𝗦), unwinding is dirt track racing at breakneck speed.
"I started racing in 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝟭 at the start of 2023. It involves racing around oval tracks with purpose-built, open-wheeled, single-seater cars with unlimited engine capacity. I currently race about 10 times a year, mainly in the north of the Netherlands.
What’s makes it special is that it’s a contact class, so you’re allowed to nudge and push the cars around you going into the turn, making it easier to pass a slower competitor. You don’t actually need any special skills, but it’s definitely an advantage not to be too afraid!
The car I drive is a steel, self-built chassis surrounded by fenders with a powerful V8 engine. The engine is a rear-wheel drive, located in the middle and the driver sits behind the engine. I share this hobby with my brother and we spend a lot of time in the workshop at our parents’ house. The family supports us. Our dad helps us with preparing and painting the car.
Before one race, I saw the sky turning black and during the race it started pouring with rain. Rain and clay is not a good combination for racing, and I found out the hard way. Mud and dirt were everywhere, and I got close and personal with the guardrail at least once every lap. Not much fun at the time, but I learned a lot from it. There was mud everywhere you can imagine! We had a good laugh about it in the end."

The average cost of any given bike on the Tour de France is 15K.
- Each rider has 5 to 7 bikes with them on tour.
- That is approx 100k in bikes, per rider.
- With 8 riders per team ..... approx 800k in bikes per team.
- There are 22 teams on this tour ... equalling approx $17.6 Million in bikes.
New to the tour in bikes this year is a local Utah brand that I absolutley love, ENVE Composites. Enve even has a rider with a stage win this year!
I am obsessed with the Tour de France. Over 23 days the riders will cover 2,170 miles, climbing over 171,653 feet in elevation gain, that is nuts!
The most amazing aspect of the race for me is the teamwork and strategy. Team strategies vary from a focus on winning sprints, stage wins, king of the mountain and GC (General Classification) or overall winner as a result of the fastest overall time.
Depending on the teams goals, you will find a variety of roles on each team. Pullers, protectors, launchers and more. On any given stage, strategies change and the teamwork takes on different shapes and roles.
Teamwork is critical in these stages. A cyclist in the peleton,drafting off of their team, uses 35-45% less energy were they riding or climbing on their own. In a business setting:
- High performing teams can boost profits by 29%.
- Diversity in teams leads to innovation and productivity increase up to 35%.
- Supportive teams lead to higher engagement & job satisfaction.

- drop or fail and do it again, and again, and…?
Do you still think I’m talking about Offroad Adventure Motocycling?
All the points listed above are valid for leadership within engineering environment too.
We living in a damn fast world e.g.VUCA, Digitalization which doesn’t need any further explanation. You need to adapt
very fast or be out…like to be offroad.
I’m used drive offroad which is legally possible around Berlin (and in the North Germany) from time to time to get the head free from all topics.
Right after I feel really relaxed even if I’m totally exhausted.
I see a bunch of similarities as leader in here too.
You have to handle often uncertain situations or facing obstacles which you didn’t recognized before. But even than you have to drive forward, as leader you’re the head for your Team, even if you know it will be hard a rough tough environment.
All eyes are on you and if you drop you’re bike, which happens much more often than you think, you have to take this a chance to learn from it and grow even further. Next situation runs better for sure. If I’m on an topic, I’m 100% focused on this to drive it and get it done whatever it takes.
This generally reflects a lot of my personal values.
And tell you what, if you do it in a Team it makes much more fun, valid for both for it! That’s why I passionate about both. This is what drives me…

Why Riding a Backwards Bike Will Break Your Brain
The backwards bike is impossible to ride without tons of practice. The only thing different about the bike is that it steers the opposite way. It’s just like when you’re learning to ride a bike all over again. Interestingly, after months of riding only a backwards bike, it becomes equally impossible to switch back to riding a traditional bicycle.
What we learn from experience in life stays with us for a long time. This video also illustrates how daily routines and things we do every day by-rote can lead to rut-like thinking. Most of our daily behaviors, thoughts, and even emotions are automated, and our reactions to life situations are just like ‘riding a bike’. However, when our life circumstances change, our life skills and knowledge can become obsolete. Learning to adapt to change when we are in a rut can be painful and very hard like relearning to ride a bike.
The video is refreshing because it shows that when we shake things up in life a bit our brains get rewired for change. Humans are adaptable, and we can always “teach an old dog new tricks.”
My Privateer Bikes prototype! Something I've been excited to share with everyone is now online.
This is essentially a dream build for me. A bike I've built up with the goal of spending as little time in the workshop as possible whilst still being something I can ride as hard as I like and most importantly is something I want to ride.
Juggling a day job and being an elite level enduro racer/rider can be tricky at times and I've always tried to lean towards being a professional rider, but without much success.
This year, I'm leaning into the fact that I work a normal 9-5 job and if I don't have the luxury to be working with a partner, then I'll just source the part myself, most likely second hand.
Whilst I'm a strong believer that you should buy certain parts brand new, purely for the warranty aspect of things, there's some things I think for the everyday rider second hand can very often be the right choice.
I want to show this year that you don't need all the most expensive bike parts in the world to ride fast and have fun. Instead, you can have just as good a time, if not better, on a more reasonably priced and sensibly chosen machine.
