In the 70s, 80s, and 90s, Door Supervisors were essential to maintaining order and security in public venues. They were respected and appreciated for their vital role in ensuring the safety of patrons and the smooth running of establishments such as nightclubs, bars, and concerts. However, in 2000-2024 the perception of Door Supervisors has changed and has been lost. As we move forward, it's important to recognise the value of Door Supervisors as a necessary part of the nightlife scene. Their presence instills a sense of security and allows people to freely enjoy their social experiences. We must respect their contribution in upholding order and ensuring the overall well-being of everyone present. How can we work towards restoring the public's trust and appreciation for Door Supervisors?

Hi Paul, I think there are a few things at play here. In my opinion (and I stress it’s just my opinion) I think the quality has been diluted somewhat by the advent of the SIA badge. Yes it provides a criminal check and some useful training but it doesn’t prepare the individual for the rigours of a Saturday night door. I live in Blackpool and was born and bought up there and needless to say it can be very lively. On the whole the door staff do their best but there are always staff who you know are put on doors to fill a number. I think inevitably you tube captures the people who bring the profession into disrepute and the minority get portrayed as the majority. The law of the land doesn’t protect the night time security enough and leaves them open to abuse and assault with little or no recrimination. Also market forces dictate that once where there were 6 staff there are now 2 doing the job of 6. No wonder they struggle. Then you have the pubs and clubs allowing people in who will blatantly cause trouble and over ringing the door supv. The public don’t see or care about this but the end result is the door supv look bad even though they are doing their best. Just my two pence on door supv.

I have become completely disheartened by how the Security industry has gone, first impressions are everything if you look the part people will take notice, if your standing there completely uninterested, on your phone and generally looking like a bag of s##t people will take zero notice of you, I once worked at a site with a guy who was excellent at he's job, and someone you would not mess with, but because he had a scar on he's face and generally a menacing look about him, management decided he looked too aggressive and outed him....outrageous

Taking time to select the right doorstaff for a venue as appose to just staffing it with 'jackets' is the most crucial aspect. I wouldn't say the respect of doorstaff has been lost, just the ones that shouldn't really be working as door supervisors in the first place.

Standards of Door supervisors have dropped since the SIA came in, i see doorman who look like they should be in high school and not really look or fit for purpose on crowd control let alone customer service amd communication skills. But at £11ph what do you expect. You get what you pay for.

Governments went crazy on ‘rules’ which doesn’t makes sense. If you worked in the airforce security and know a bit about defense Yet still you have to do the whole course During the plandemic all greats stepped out of the business So all memtors are gone And the new ones are 90% clueless
