We're back!
Join the discussion on how to ensure lab technicians want to stay in our ever evolving laboratories.
On last year's panel, we discussed how we can prepare students for the industry. One topic that came up was designing training strategies to provide a better transition for students going into the industry. The same is true for retention of lab techs in those labs.
As laboratories quickly become more advanced with new technologies, skill gaps are identified more frequently. It is important that labs also design strategic training programs tailored to each skill level. This is just one of the topics that will be covered.
I'm excited to join this incredible line of panelists to discuss a very important issue. Hope to see some familiar and new faces this year!

🚀 Exciting Times in Tech Transfer! 🌐
Thrilled to see KiwiNet achieving RTTP accreditation, signalling a promising future for tech transfer offices here in Aotearoa. As I reflect on my experience at the University of Glasgow tech transfer office, I'm intrigued by the potential role of Translational Scientists (TS) in shaping the future of innovation 💡
In the UK, I witnessed the power of a dedicated pool of funds for tech transfer. Academics could tap into these resources to propel their innovations across diverse disciplines. What set this initiative apart was the inclusion of Translational Scientists—individuals with post-PhD expertise, essential for bridging the gap in short-term, specialised projects.
Here's a glimpse into how my role as a Translational Scientist functioned:
🌟 Allocation of Funds: Participated in the committee deciding on funds for early proof-of-concept experiments— does the equivalent exist within the uni/institutes or is it external i.e @kiwinet?
🌟 Filling Skill Gaps: Translational Scientists played a pivotal role in projects with short timelines, addressing the challenge of finding skilled individuals for specialised tasks and short-term contracts
🌟 Collaboration and Decision-Making: Acted as a liaison between lead academics and the tech transfer office, guiding decisions on IP support, facilitating publications, managing projects, and driving industry engagement.
Reflecting on this model, I'm curious to learn about your tech transfer offices Massey VenturesWellington UniVenturesUniServicesOtago Innovation Limited. How do you navigate early-stage funding, address skill gaps, and foster collaboration between academia and industry? Let's exchange insights and shape the future of tech transfer together! 🌟

We are happy to present yet another skilled talent joining us at SaltX! Georgia will take on the role of Project Lead in our growing operations team! 🙌 Here's your chance to get to know her better.
Q: Welcome to SaltX, Georgia! You have an impressive background in research and development; what made you want to join SaltX?
Thanks! I believe it is an exciting time for SaltX and I am very happy to be joining such a dynamic and experienced team!
Coming previously from a start-up environment, one of my main motivations for joining SaltX was that the company have clearly surpassed the startup phase and have developed an innovative technology that is commercially viable and industrially scalable.
Moreover, it is exciting (and strongly motivating) to have the opportunity to work at the technological forefront when it comes to reducing global emissions from big industries and contribute to the global effort in addressing the climate crisis.
Finally, from a personal perspective, during my interview process, I was taken aback by the welcoming and energetic mindset of all of whom in the company that I interacted with, which to me was a big indication of a positive company culture, where people and ideas are valued.
Q: What motivates and drives you in your professional life?
First and foremost, I am motivated by addressing technological and scientific challenges, driving innovation and striving to do better.
I believe SaltX ticks all these boxes. Their EAC technology, innovative mindset and expertise in renewable energy solutions are contributing to addressing the biggest challenge in society today – the climate crisis. Of course, this is not an easy task and requires convincing big-industry decision makers to adopt new technological solutions and think beyond the status quo. I see the team at SaltX are doing this every day.
Q: Originally from the UK, what led you to make the move to Sweden?
During my Master’s degree, I was fortunate to have a very fruitful collaboration with a group of researchers at KTH and had the opportunity to briefly work here in Stockholm. After completing my PhD in Chemistry (in the UK) and conducting a post-doctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University (US), I was eager to return to Europe and lucky to be offered a position at KTH. Since moving to Sweden permanently (September 2016), I have not looked back!
Q: Lastly and perhaps most importantly, share a talent you possess that your new colleagues haven't discovered yet.
I am known in some (small) badminton circles for my signature cross-court drop-shots.

Hear from Marianna Tampere, postdoc at SciLifeLab, as she shares about her experience and learnings from the poster session last year. Do you have a big idea to share? Apply for the #NLSDays 2024 Innovation Posters Session at https://lnkd.in/d82vtpUS
“As a translational researcher it has always been my hope that the work of our project teams could one day benefit patients. By joining NLSDays in 2023 I was able to experience how companies, investors, service providers and other industry members interact in a scene where pitches, panel discussions and brief meetings in small booths can lead to big success stories for patients.”
What did you learn from this event?
“Personally, I learned how to pitch my research findings to a very broad audience and that high quality science is the core of every project, no matter if in academia or industry.”
Why should academic researchers get to know the industrial side?
“It's refreshing and eye-opening to experience a different way for professional interactions and communicating science - I could compare it to exploring the other side of the coin for the first time. In my opinion it adds great value to academic teams when their members understand and embrace all angles of life science. NLSDays is an excellent platform for academics to get to know the industrial side - either for possible collaborations, career opportunities or any other purposes. Highly recommend!”
